@Snowy thanks. I have now committed to not cycling tomorrow anyway, but may walk if I wake early enough and it isn't overly icy.

@stickman, yes the guitar sounds of milk carton kids very Dave rawlins. The close harmonies you could say so too but I see the everly brothers, harder to tell who is doing what with the MCKs. I saw Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlins at The Queen's Hall way back when their third encore ibpnvolved them coming right to the edge of the stage and acapella She walks these hills in her long black veil.

Coen bros soundtrAcks often good Albums. Lebowski and o brother where art thou also strong.

@bax, interesting Lyme info. In around 1985 went on big camping trip with pal from school who had joined The Marines. He checked a lot for ticks and I had one quite high up my thigh. Extracted in a fort William car park using any availBle methods. Might have looked slightly odd if anyone had checked what was occurring in the Citroen 2cv. But vital to shift dem ticks.

@bax - very interesting on Lymes - didnt the creator of phones4u do a big thing on it a few years back, where he also had to go abroad to get him and his family cured of it - the NHS test came back negative for some of his family, but the one they did abroad showed it up.
he also was of the suggestion that it can be passed person to person without the need for a tick bite , if you catch my drift..... but biting may be involved if thats your flavour....

LARGE swathes of the city received no gritting during the recent spell of snow, opposition councillors have claimed.

They say the council failed to treat icy roads and pavements in many suburban areas of the Capital and left grit bins empty.

Now they are demanding a review of the system for prioritising the roads to be gritted and how it can be improved to include other areas.

Tory transport spokesman Nick Cook said: “Despite a relatively short spell of snow and ice so far this winter, the council’s gritting efforts have been left well and truly exposed.

    Thread drift alert!

My dad had undiagnosed Lyme's for years (probably) and has ended up with sensory neuropathy in his legs (so he can't walk properly). A sad conclusion to his hillwalking career (he never bagged all the Munros as a result).

About the untreated paths - Wester Hailes was particularly horrific during the ice. Even the big (shared use?) path that runs from Dumbryden to the shopping centre was left untreated and was sheet ice. That's like a ped highway. Due to the design of the place, walking on roads isn't an option to get from A to B (not that the roads were any better anyway). If I lived round there I'd've been livid.

Some frosty areas on the canal towpath between Meggetland and Hermiston House and quite a lot of ice to the west of Wester Hailes, mostly in the vicinity of the notorious 's' bend. I was glad to be on foot at that particular section.

with Lymes there does seem to be almost like a fluke where a medic will think about testing for it almoist as a last resort rather than something immediate (so I am guessing the cost is high).

"The SNP/Labour run council must do better"

I think this is the first time I've encountered a non-deliberate garden path sentence.

"huge swathes of suburban edinburgh are left untreated"

.. and how can I take my regular 30 mph rat run past that school if its not cleared of snow.

OT: Been my understanding that part of the problem with testing for Lyme is that it won't always get picked up when present - a negative test isn't evidence of absence, as they say. No conspiracies needed for that. Diseases can be weird. (And they can evolve & move into new areas, begin to spread via new vectors, become more or less virulent etc. etc.)

I got a tick in Bawsinch Nature Reserve in the first week of January. Bite slow to heal despite rapid and complete removal of the beast. Never had one in winter before.

I won't be cowering indoors any time soon. I reckon that's more dangerous than going to the woods or on the moor.

@Frenchy interesting stuff about these garden path sentences! Told MrBill about it and he got back to me with "an old joke from natural linguistic processing" that they fed the sentence "time flies like an arrow" into the computer and it replied "fruit flies like a banana" :D

A tick removal tool has long been a feature of the mini first aid kit carried on the bike. Although in a pinch you can cut a notch in a bit of thin plastic, that is just as effective.

A colleague went summer hillwalking a few years ago, incorporating a long lazy lunch. That evening he discovered that his, um, nature reserve contained at least a dozen ticks. I believe he sought professional assistance...which probably wasn't much fun for anyone involved.

I was somewhat surprised to find that the ice on the towpath west of Wester Hailes had all but gone today.

sorry to hear that LivD - that's very common mid-stage lyme. if myocarditis symptoms develop you might push for extended iv antibiotic treatment

as unhurt comments, lyme tests aren't any indicator, so don't be fobbed off. my partner got a positive test via raigmore incidentally, but it didn't help matters much

nhs infectious diseases dept aren't big believers in the long term existence of lyme, they tend to pass it all on to neuropathy dept who will talk about 'functional' disorder but not address the cause

    back now to the weather

No icy weather warnings on the BBC app for tomorrow morning despite probable freezing temperatures. As usual, I'll be interested to hear about early morning experiences on the canal towpath.
