"Severe weather warning"

Given that I had wrapped up well I think that might have been my most enjoyable commute of the year so far, albeit there were no kingfisher or other particularly interesting wildlife sightings. I did spot a heron beyond the bypass standing on the ice in what looked like a bit of a huff.

Brand new goretex super cozy gloves Christmas presents have failed to keep my hands warm for two days running now.

Only warm up slightly when puffing up bridge over tram line between Balgreen and Saughton. Maybe try cycling faster to boost general internal heating system? Pace last couple of days best described as "amblin'".

Do Herons have any other looks?

Looking forward to spring for some amateur ornithology along the Chancelot Path, top sightings to date include Bullfinches and Grey Wagtails (more exciting than the name suggests).

Enjoyed a stare off on Monday's commute with a buzzard who just couldn't quite be bothered taking off from his fence post, just before Royal Elizabeth Yard.

@IanE possibly not, but sometimes they also show purpose whereas the ice was making a mockery of that possibility. It wasn't like the entire canal was frozen though so it could have easily taken off and flown to an ice-free spot.

Some tiny snowflakes are falling lightly at Heriot-Watt just now. I hope that this doesn't amount to anything.

Just the beginnings of baby snowflakes in Roslin at about 8am, but the Beeb reckons it'll warm up to about 3ºC this afternoon so I risked it for a biscuit and motorbiked today (mainly because I needed a rest).

A bit damp on the towpath but no particular slippiness.

After the forecast I was pleasantly surprised at the fairly dry ice free paths and carriageway. Still bloody cold though.

Bone freezing wind at pop up park this morning. Hope @sallyhinch and co haven't succumbed to hypothermia yet...

When will it stop?! (Probably sometime around early/mid spring.)

So not a good weekend to take the family on an exposed coastal cycling adventure without bailout options then...

Our wraggling a family collection of bikes on a train will have to wait for an other day.

Up to two inches of snow (5cm) can be expected quite widely, with double that expected on ground above 500 feet.

Areas affected by the warnings include Central, Tayside and Fife, Grampian, Highlands and Islands, Orkney and Shetland, south west Scotland, Lothian and Borders and Strathclyde.

There was a wee bit of icy snow lying on Blackford Hill this afternoon but barely enough to make a child fall over.

@hankchief, Too bad about your family Soderberg no. Exposed costal trip looks to have been fun though.

@AC- yeah, probably a bit optimistic in the planning. Both days were bright and sunny, it was just the wind was awfully strong & cold yesterday.

Holy Island is a lovely (bite sized) place to visit and the concept of a family cycle from Berwick-U-T is definitely doable, but maybe in summer.

Now to plan the next adventure...

Meanwhile snow in Corstorphine but not much.

    How's the towpath today anyone?

If the pavement outside my house is a good predictor may well be icy (pavement was ungritted the night before last so was slippy enough for me to clear skinny path from my door to both sets of pedestrian crossings).

Thin layer of snow from Eskbank to GB today. I came in on the snow bike today - it enabled me to use the cyclepaths plus resistance training. But I think a road bike would have be fine with care, route choice and road positioning.

It's too cold and I don't wanna (go to work)!

The temperature felt surprisingly mild in Old Town (I still don't want to go to work though), but there is some snow lying on pavements and paths, and maybe a little on side roads. I have now decided on the bus in any case...

  30. Snow in Livi this morning so resorted to the mtb again. Most of the roads would have been fine with a road bike but for the few places where the snow was bad I was pleased to be on the mtb. Makes for a tough start to the week on the legs though :(
