Time to go outside and find some lunch I think.

Visions of @jdanielp perched in a bush staring intently into the black water of the canal.

Flurries of driving wet snow here in the south of town at the 73m contour line. Blecht.

February! What is it good for? Absolutely nothing.

@IWRATS - As long as it's dry below the 72m contour line and above the 74m contour line, I'll be happy.

Some frozen patches on the canal towpath this morning (I'm guessing from wind-chill more than actual low temperature) but mostly just damp. Despite menacing skies ahead of me, I managed to avoid getting wet as the worst of the weather moved more north than east as I cycled west, although I did catch the edge of some minor snow flurries at times.

Black ice and frost in That Roslin. I tested the waters before wheeling out the motorbike. It's not so easy to pick up off the ground as a bicycle.

The Beeb reckons it'll warm up to about 6ºC today.

Black ice in Corstorphine. So bad I couldn't climb a small slope due to not having enough weight on the rear studs.

    Take care out there.

Had an off on the path between Queensferry and Kirkliston as I was negotiating the entrances to Dundas Castle. Luckily I bounced, so apart from a bit of bruising no damage done.

No sign of any ice up to that point, but then treacherous at the Airport roundabout - was a good 1-2cm thick where the farmer outlet flows down the path parallel to the westbound slip road. Walked a long way to avoid that.

Ice on Polwarth/Merchiston/Morningside side streets too. was melting as the sun hit it, but suggests not much grit left on the streets.

also saw one ped slip on Leamington Walk.

Sheet ice at the bottom of Leamington Walk / Meadow Pl / Jawbone pedestrian crossing.

The cyclist behind me came down on the bend where they've created the new and awful shared-space areas that mean that pedestrians just wander into your path.

Icy on Regent Road footways this morning. Sun will clear some of it, but the shaded bits will be treacherous for the rest of the day I expect.

Quite extensively icy on sections of the canal towpath. I was committed to turning left onto the towpath at Lochrin Basin after crossing Leamington Lift Bridge when I spotted the shininess of the surface under my tyre so just cycled as smoothly as possible and I managed to stay upright... I suspect that the temperature and sunshine made it far more navigable than it might have been earlier. Approaching the Wester Hailes 'S' Bend, I took the option of 'braking' to standstill by rolling onto the muddy grass before dismounting and walking around, then remounting at a safe distance thereafter.

Didn’t they say this last week??

A sudden stratospheric warming above the North Pole could lead to Scotland being engulfed in snow, according to the Met Office.

    And probably more down south.

I would be astonished if there is 16 inches of snow over that short period of time - unless they are talking drifting over very high ground.

If it is even half of that in the central belt, allied to very low temperatures, it will still be fun and games. I expect my street to be gritted sometime in April.

It's supposed be light dry snow that blows around easily so good for drifts.
Should be interesting for the Forth and Tay audax on Sunday :)

@amir, indeed. I recall a few years ago most riders bailing after a whitetout on the FRB: literally couldn't see 20 feet ahead.

A few hardy souls did complete ride even in those conditions!

In between snow showers in Eskbank. There's a fine layer of snow, a little slippy underfoot. Would be okay to cycle on roads. But with the forecast I decided to take the bus. Good to rest sometimes

Light layer of snow in Corstorphine. Spikey tyre is back on. I might be mad.
