"They can clear the streets in Canada" - this informative thread explains how (and how costly it is):

Terrible underfoot in Roseburn Street and Westfield Street. Churned or compacted snow. This is a main walking route from public transport and to the supermarket. Much easier walking on the road. Actually it would have been safer to cycle, as there's little traffic.

Almost no milk and not much bread left at Sainsbury's.

Out and about in Corstorphine today it was interesting to note which shopkeepers had made the effort to stay open and what the priorities of shoppers were, given talk of panic buying of the staples.

Several shops were shut but all the cafes were open, and doing good business.

Tesco, though with long queues, did not appear to have suffered from panic buying with one exception - the pizza shelves had been stripped bare. How curious.

A bit warmer today after the 40mph winds this morning. No trains so no commute for me: working from home. Cleared the footway outside our stair again of snow from last night, already compacted underfoot.

Dug out the hybrid from the garage and put on the Schwalbe Snow Stud wheelset for the first since winter 2010! Really good grip on compacted snow, not so great in churned up slush. At least it will serve as transport for the next five days or so until the thaw comes (Thursday?).

Witnessed quite a few arguments between car drivers on our street about who should cede priority. Honestly folk should calm down a bit. No whiff of a gritter round these parts except for nearby London and Easter Roads.

Heating working upstairs again this afternoon. I suspect the north east wind affected our boiler - maybe condensate pipe? Anyway finally heat upstairs.

Main roads in town seem fine now. On the other hand, people are currently skiing on Gloucester Street Lane (and someone built a jump!).

Rescued my commuter from work this evening - main city roads all passable on normal tyres. I certainly seemed to be having an easier time of than most pedestrians, as all but a few pavements were either covered in compacted snow/ice or snow the consistency of porridge. If things freeze up overnight then it could be terrible going for everyone tomorrow.

@unhurt @crowriver Detected thaw a wee bit on my triking & walking today.
Confirmed when downstairs neighbour appeared with news of burst pipe in empty flat between her and us.
Saw another XC skier on canal path. Had to take her skis off under the Viewforth bridge! Good to use snow while it's here though.

WoL all iced from West Bowling Green to the Shore. NEPN from Roseburn to 5 ways passable - mushy slush but none of the slush-on-ice stuff you get on roads. Chancelot almost clear.
Two newly-deposited moraines either side of Links Gardens blocking the cycle/ped crossing at the raised table. I batted holes big enough for bikes and feet with my tyres.

We really should be ashamed of ourselves
Seen that on one of the special extended snow news editions.

Going off on a tangent. This could be fantastic or a complete disaster.

No @unhurt, sinus permitting, compact ice on the towpath and WoL path is cyclable. Have been using it all week.

On the roads, snowy weather forced police to turn away two beer delivery trucks at the border due to “unsafe road conditions” as they attempted to deliver booze to one of the country’s largest distribution centres.

I wish it would just stop snowing!

I cycled to the shops yesterday, bought some firewood from B&M* and then shovelled snow for three hours. Now it's all turning white again outside and I'm rather fancying going to sleep on my sofa. Wake me up when the snow's melted, will you?

    * I measured it at 20% moisture content, so not suitable for burning just yet.

It was sleet for a while here in Corstorphine, now back to snow. The pavements are going to be horrendous.

Went down WoL path this morning, then towpath. Lost fromt who eel back wheel front wheel in quick succession at Harrison gardens. Compacted snow had turned to ice, I went with skinnier spikes, I will try fatter tyres later. Slushy bits and Slidey bits aplenty.

Little sainsburys at viewforth has lots of stock as only taking cash sales. NOMMILK BUT BREAD, CROSSANTS, eggs, apples, many, many bananas.

Went into Evans super cool sales person giving it, did you receive the email saying your special order was in? It won't be here unless you received the email. I said well, I am here so maybe you could check. He did and then went how strange it is in. £14 for a button. Jeez.

He gave glowing red to Field Work the cafe across the road which was true I then cycled up the road and passed the Paisley Legend John Byrne carrying an instrument in a bag that made it look like a combination of a cello and a beach ball.

John had a yellow tweed trilby a glengarry glen check tweed jacket and similar trousers (not actually matching more contrasting). Snowing heavily by this point.

Now just have to figure how to fit the Boa button to my winter defroster bootees
