Riding from Colinton (snow) into Haymarket (slush) was miserably cold and wet. Absolutely soaked through. Roads not bad except slushy.

Bought a damp big issue from my buddy at the bike racks at Haymarket.

Rode the torpedo in from Roslin this morning and wondering if it was sensible.

No rain or sleet at waking up time.
BBC weather forecast said 3ºC and sleet.
    Sleeting at breakfast time.
    Snowing at commuting time.
Windscreen snowed up within ten minutes.
    Overheated within 30 minutes.

An hour and a half later and it's now not even sleeting. The joys of working below the snow line.

Rain in Leith, slushy snow by the time I get to Linlithgow. Several drivers attempt to murder me as I'm blinded by snow-driving-into-eyes. I would like to return the favour. Bring back the weather where drivers felt threatened by the conditions.

SCHOOL pupils in Midlothian are being urged not to arrive at school until 11am today after heavy snowfall this morning.

Midlothian Council took to Twitter to warn parents and pupils of the adverse weather.

Still snowing heavily in Livingston - bad enough to slow [most] drivers down (see today's rubbish driving for the exception).

traffic chaos in Balerno this moring. Neither of my snow bikes could make it down the Wol Path due to the snow being slush puppy consistency on top of churned up frozen footprints. Indeed the track I was following gave up at the first exit as did I. Went in road from there, (well slush pavement until safe) this held up traffic then went down to Heriot Watt aand along canal towpath. Towpath also very slushy until the aqueduct. After that it was palin sailing. Scared two gosander into flying across surface of the Scott Russell Aqueduct. Nice.

Traffic chaos in Inverkeithing as well. A bus was stuck at the railway bridge roadworks and couldn't get past the cars waiting to go down the hill. Cars backed up in both directions and nobody seeming able to move. Didn't look like being resolved any time soon.

I scooted down the pavement feeling smug, only to get my comeuppance on the rest of my commute. Absolutely drenched- gloves, overshoes and rucksack thoroughly infiltrated. Some massive piles of snow on path through Newbridge by garages and some major floods, especially at the airport roundabout where it was ~18" deep.

Not looking forward to Loch Dalmeny on the way home.

Similar at the railway underpass at the Baileyfield Road/Sir Harry Lauder Road junction (not a route I'd recommend cycling on, I took a wrong turn). Drivers were doing u-turns to avoid it, but I had my wellies on, so thoroughly enjoyed cycling through it. Luckily didn't discover any hidden potholes.

@gembo I would be interested to hear how things are on your return journey on the canal towpath (assuming you go that way). Palin sailing sounds thoroughly pleasant. A pair of goosander were diving under patches of ice to surface in otherwise ice-locked areas of the canal yesterday.

Twitter is reporting that Baileyfield Road is now closed under the railway bridge due to a burst water main.

Annoyingly, I took the bus today for the first time this year as I just wanted to be warm and read my book. I suspect it will be a slow bus or a cold walk home.

Rain off, train off and all I really want is my wet shoes off.

Should be home by morning and thankfully working from there tomorrow.

It was clear on canal towpath BUT I only ventured beyond the aqueduct as far as bridge over a70. Due to impulse I did not go directly onto a70 once over canal but went up Tarmac bit of WoL path. Still had slush there.

    Michael Palin Sailing?

Towpath now clear Meggetland to Bypass except for one remaining slushy bit just by the S-bend where the canal turns north. Passable by ordinary bike without problem, I would say.

A90 path still clogged up pretty badly at high point several feet drifts up against the walls and deep icy slush with two single bike trails going through it at the worst point. Navigating through it is a good test of either your singletrack skills or your overshoes. Wish I'd followed Misterbee's suggestion of going through Dalmeny Estate- road did look clear from entrance above Cramond Brig.

Several large lakes to pedal through on the ride home, meant feet were thoroughly soaked.

The bike path alongside Gilmerton Road on the stretch north of the bypass is still clogged with snow.

Black ice on pavements in Gilmerton

Towpath treacherous Meggetland to bypass at 0745. I was fine on studded tyres, but every other bike I saw was having to push at some points. I'm sure it will improve soon: the black ice wasn't generally very thick.

much of A90 cycleway still grimly unrideable, even on studs

can't see this thawing out any time soon, re-icing nightly

factor in heaps of storm-accumulated hawthorn debris that will make things very tricky for an extended period post-thaw

you really have to laugh at the hollow-worded active travel modal shift corporate strategy reports

moving on, can anyone provide a dalmeny estate update?

@bax- meant to mention the debris- more than I have ever seen. That could definitely do with clearance.

I'm WFH today and tomorrow, but will try Dalmeny Estate on Friday.

The panic, closures and disruption that ensued from the Beast from the East weather front had some pensioners raising eyebrows in confusion at how wimpish the younger population are today.

I'm kind of glad that I didn't check this thread this since I would probably have ended up taking a bus. At half eight the towpath was mostly ok from town to Heriot-Watt, but there were extensive wet, partly icy patches, some tramlines of icy slush, and large patches of icy slush near the Wester Hailes 'S' bend and the turn off onto Germiston House Road. I managed ok, dismounting for the two large patches, but was quite nervous at times. Hoping it has improved by the time I head back again...

@chdot, Helen Martin in climate change reference shocker!

"The more sophisticated, centralised and technological life becomes, the more vulnerable we are to disruption. And as climate change makes the weather more unpredictable, we need more, not fewer, measures in place in Scotland to cope with the risks from desperately cold weather."
