To be fair, this was one of her better rants/reminiscences.

No mention of cycling, just as well!

"To be fair, this was one of her better rants/reminiscences."

Really? I thought it was inconsistent nonsense, as is par for the course from this writer.

First of all, the "snowflake" jibe. Virtually everyone I saw walk-commuting last week during the red alert/bus shutdown was under 40, the majority probably 30 or under ie those who some superannuated, arrogant individuals choose to decry as snowflakes. The only Boomers I saw were behind the wheel of a slipping and sliding, inappropriately-tyred car, endangering everyone else who'd made a sensible transport choice.

We are told "Parents who expect young children to look after themselves until they come home from work would now be accused of neglect." I would say quite rightly.

"Most mums didn’t work. Those who did rarely had “childcare” so simply trained their kids to look after themselves wearing their house key on a string round their neck." Sounds to me like we live in more enlightened times, thankfully.

As for the other folderol about "15-foot drifts", I think that's happened once in the last century (winter of 62-63), my parents often spoke about it so clearly it made a lasting impression, not sure anything was much more 'resilient' then, the country was shut down for several weeks, except that most people had coal fires and coal in the cellar?

    Yours,
    Gen X

The towpath was in rather better condition than this morning when I headed back into town at around half one and will hopefully be back to 'normal' by the end of the day if the sun stays out. It will still be likely to be icy west of Wester Hailes tomorrow morning if it freezes overnight though.

It's all relative! I've had the misfortune to read a number of her rants, and this was relatively coherent in comparison with others...

"The only Boomers I saw were behind the wheel "

You know countering anecdata with anecdata is pointless. Suffice to say doesn't match my observations.

"Sounds to me like we live in more enlightened times, thankfully."

Not sure about that. For example the presumption in the past 20 years or so that kids playing in the street, or outside, unsupervised by adults is "dangerous". Or that kids have to be ferried everywhere by car because reasons (including the over hyped "stranger danger" fear).

Sounds more like a fearful, over protective, media hysteria led society in many respects. Living in a bubble behind the windscreen or the phone screen (or both simultaneously).

Sure things have changed since the 1960s but not all for the better...

    "folderol about "15-foot drifts""

I suppose if you lived through the "big freeze" (think there were several, another in 1947 and some in 1950s too) then this recent hullabaloo might seem like a lot of fuss about relatively little. I didn't live through that, my parents did. But I do remember worse snowfall in the 1970s and 1980s and the world did not come to a halt.

dalmeny estate usual diversion route is completely clear

there is running water at the sharp steep bend, which might be an ice issue for the studless at dark o'clock

i didn't find the diversion saved me any time overall but its worth it to avoid the deflation lottery posed by excess hawthorn debris on A90 path mentioned upthread

Is the Innocent now clear of snow/slush?

Have now stood down the studded tyre bike until the next time there's some serious snow - November, maybe? Will give it a serious clean before final mothballing though.

Only snow in evidence in central areas has been heaped there by selfish drivers clearing roads and exits for their vehicles. Blocking the footway almost entirely at some points.

I haven't been down the whole length, but from Brunstane to Hay Avenue was fine yesterday.

Noted lots of standing water on the towpath this evening, primarily west of Kingsknowe, which will likely be black ice patches in the morning (minus 3 predicted overnight).

Be careful going over Clermiston Road. Black ice is rife where the water must be running off Corstorphine hill.

The towpath was frosty and a little icy in places this morning at around half eight. As usual, the Wester Hailes 's' bend was the worst spot but I made it across ok. I did feel a little slippage there, however, and a bit going up Hermiston House Road...

A90 path situation between Burnshot and Dalmeny, as i see it

Firstly, cyclists were banned from using the A90, which i previously commuted on without issue

It took many years thereafter for a safe pathway to be put in place

Dignitaries took the plaudits while some of us were sceptical about any ongoing commitment

Lo and behiold, no maintenance schedule transpired, despite this path being a regular dumping ground for hazardous motoring debris and hawthorn related problems, excess autumn leaf mulch, seasonal ice and snow etc

Active travel activists periodically petition councillors on twitter to get the path maintained

Council team eventually do something to placate councillors and pay lip service to saying they'll keep it maintained in future

Rinse and repeat, no ongoing commitment

Whats it going to take for the council to recognise the A90 path as a critical active travel corridor which requires frequent maintenance ?

Loads of patches of ice this morning in Roslin, formed from the runoff of the many piles of shovelled and gradually melting snow. I was on the motorbike and going very canny until I could reach the main road.

I offered to do a user count on the mornings Spokes do their Edinburgh counts, but the first I heard of the last count was the publication of the results.

I'll ask again. If we can say that we have x commuters daily, then we have numbers to back up the anecdotal evidence that there are a lot of users and it deserves maintenance. If I can get the date, then I'll arrange to do the count, whether Spokes want to use it or not.

@paddy that would be good, cheers

Yet you'd think it would be self-evident that an active travel corridor adjacent to the busy motor-only A90 would be correspondingly regarded as critical infrastructure and maintained accordingly

    Twitter works again -

Have confirmed with road services that the snow will be dealt with today. We will also try to sweep for the thorns but that might have to follow on when the sweeper is available. Hope this helps for the journey home!

A90 path still an abject mess at 16:20

can't tell if anyone's been there for token maintenance but there is a small channel you can get through without dismounting

if that's their effort, its very poor

as DaveC points out, those high mounds of snow are just going to melt and refreeze over the path

and this is not a path that gets salted or gritted

there's just no thought put into the requirements of the job

car bumper still there as well, right across the path, a classic debris

what are we to do, just throw it over the wall into the estate?

wouldn't be the first time that it ended up being the only option
