I saw a bumble bee on my cycle home recently; Monday perhaps?

Yes, jdp, there were a few bumblers last week, but they will be shivering in their tiny fur coats the now?

Was buzzed by a bumbly bee down at the allotment on Monday while digging the plot. No sign of the beastie yesterday: perhaps having a snooze to wait out the spell of cooler weather?

Left the institution last night and stepped out into a severe hail storm. 'I'll give it five minutes' says I, retreating to the portico. And for once it worked. Got home no more than damp, via the Lyon Playfair library, where SRD was not.

@iwrats apologies. domestic responsibilities meant i was not able to attend, despite having been involved in some of the original planning for the event.

It's WARM. I'm sitting outside on my garden seat* drinking tea. I think this fleece dressing gown is too warm for the conditions.

I was at the farmers' market. Locking up my bike next to a beardy cyclist who I recognised from somewhere (spokes? pop?). I commented on how nice the weather was. he muttered something unimpressed sounding. As we were leaving, and again both unlocking, I said 'how wonderful the sun felt on my back' because it did. He then muttered 'but at this time of the year it just gets inyour eyes'

Clearly I was transgressing proper cyclist chat behaviour and market behaviour. But oh that sun felt so good!

(was going to put this in spotted under 'grumpiest cyclist'

Lot cheerier at Balerno farmer's market, asked local MP if she had bought herself an electric bike yet. She is pre-contemplative. dr Phillipa cycles in London

Very slightly fresh-brisk when we left Leith this morning with a touch of leftover mist on the Restalrig Railway Path, but toastywarm at Skelf. Currently looking like I might have to bring in the optimistic exterior washing and a painting at any moment.

    Optimistic paintings? Tell us more...

I was in danger of getting sunburnt on the back of my neck whilst chatting with Iain McR at WeeHailes.

@iwrats "A tree with a nest in it and the sun"; water-soluble child-friendly paint on old MoD/UKWMO radiation dosage log graph paper. I'll take a picture in a few minutes when we're home.

The optimism is solely attributed to the external positioning of the clothes.

That's quite something, thank you. Logarithmic graph paper a lovely touch.

    Happy cycling ceremonies;

    1) Raking through the glove bag for my fingerless mitts, lost since September.

    2) Stopping to take my jacket off on Minto Street.

    3) Casual chat with a guy on a Brompton with a hero cam bolted to his head and a rear axle containing a bag of canaries.

    4) Regretting going along the Innocent at around teatime due to flies entering eyes.

  18. 5)Stopping to pick some 'wild garlic' (or rather three-cornered leek) at the side of the cyclepath on the ride home last night, and using it in my pasta when I got home.

'MUCH of northern Britain is likely to see wetter winters and much drier summers in coming decades if climate change goes unchecked...'

'...rainfall is likely to become more extreme in both summer and winter...'

'High-intensity rainstorms that see 10mm (0.4in) or more of rain an hour are likely to become more frequent...'

    Well, Met.

I'm going to avoid getting up for a bit and pretend that I didn't hear any rain.

It's gone quiet in city centre. I'm going to cautiously get up.

Currently dry with blue sky breaking through the clouds so presumably the precipitation is slowly moving west.

Fresh batch of dark clouds cluttering up the sky here in SE Edinburgh. I think they're gearing up for another wetting.

A bit wet for the feeder rides but dry and now sunny for the main event. You'll all know that already of course since you're all here as are so many other people :)

  30. Below zero on my ride in this morning. Is it really the 1st May?

It took a hot shower and 25 minutes sitting at my desk afterwards before I had full feeling restored my toes.
