"Severe weather warning"

(7355 posts)

  1. @unhurt Me too! I'd seen the Met Office app forecast for today (45mph gusts) and heard the wind battering my flat last night, so decided the bike was staying at home. The thought of slogging into that headwind from Leith to the Gyle was too much to contemplate when I'm already feeling a bit low.

When I stepped out this morning and saw that a number of the big planters had blown over outside Finn & Bear, I knew I'd made the right choice!

Cycling up Milton Road East was fun this morning, definitely a case of rule 9 taking effect.

The wind kept me up overnight so I was feeling quite belligerent towards it

I slept like a baby but same. Getting tedious.

Cycled in at a fair pace this morning but then used the electric bike to get up to oxgangs and then later Home via Colinton with the tea. Very good on days like this the old Lecky bike

“For those complaining about the wind”

Complaints more about ‘why aren’t there any warnings when it is at least as windy as previous times when constant warnings were issued’.

Quite a decent sprinkling of ground frost on the north-facing slopes of Allermuir Hill this morning. A 'fresh' day for the folks doing to the Tough 10 in aid of Cancer Research.

-4 celcius as I cycled in from Ratho this morning. Nice to watch the sunrise over Edinburgh.

Roads and pavements in south Morningside icy and slidy. Roads are passable with care, and will quickly clear I reckon.

@jdanielp. Apart from a couple of icy stretches along the canal ( where water had gathered) it was icy and frost free. Paths aroung Edinburgh path had been gritted and Tram path was fine. I still rode with caution.

@biketrain thank you. I will cycle cautiously, although as Greenroofer says I reckon that what is there will clear quickly as the sun reaches it.

Had to deploy the woolly hat and the foam spraydeck this morning.

I was surprised how much frost there was in the middle of town. I had to nip into the other office first thing because I left some stuff there by mistake on Friday. The tram path later on was fine, and it was nice that the chicane gate was open, even if temporarily.

Beeb reckoned on 6°C at lunchtime, so should be fine later.

Brutal in Fife and out West. The dreadful infrastructure in Dalmeny was made worse by a lot of ice and there were bad patches around the Cramond Road South crossing where I had an off and the path west of Craig leith, part of which I got off and walked.

October may not be too early for studs...

@biketrain did you have winter tyres on your bike? I was surprised by how frosty parts of the towpath were at 9 am this morning. Scottish Canals haven't cut back the growth of vegetation by the towpath which may be contributing to protecting the frost from the sun for a little longer than usual. I encountered the worst frost and some ice on Lower Gilmore Place, Leamington Lift Bridge and the first part of the towpath to Viewforth Bridge, experiencing a slidey moment as I was half-way over the lift bridge. I was very glad that the Wester Hailes 'S' bend was all clear though.

@jdanielp. No winter tyres today. I was on the Brompton, small wheels so not to far to fall off. I think the frost may still have been forming at I rode in. I had cleared Mrs Biketrain's car of ice at 06:15 and I am told that it was iced over by 07:15.

If I order a couple of bags of spare Schwalbe studs to replace those untimely ripp'd out last year, does anyone else need any?

I do have Greenroofer's old Pedalites back on my bike again now though, which is always fun.

Take care in Midlothian this morning. It's icy on untreated surfaces - especially pavements and minor streets. Also be aware that some drivers couldn't be bothered to de-ice their windscreens.
    Hopefully will warm up soon.
