I got the big bike out aiming to do my "long commute". Got to the top of Balerno and the road was sufficiently slippy that I bailed out back to Edinburgh Park and a train to Livingston.
I was <Rule2> freezing when I got the the office.

so, who's going to be the first to put on spikey tyres and guarantee us a long, wet and warm spell?

@fimm you got further than me! But i am glad I am not the only one who bailed out this morning.

I got to the towpath, saw some frost around, got off the bike to test the surface and extrapolated that Livingston would be too frosty for me today. So got back home, went back to bed, asked my colleague if Bichael and I can get a lift but his car was full of stuff, so I chose to drive.

Plenty frost between Whitehouse Road and SQ this morning but it didn't feel slippy. The high path by the A90 now seems to be mature enough not to turn to a skating rink at the first sign of low temperatures and even the turn at the brig was fine.

I really only put them on when it gets snowy. The short way to work is *usually* fine ice-wise (if unpleasant due to traffic). The long way with less traffic but icier is too far really to drag my ancient stud-shod mtb

I had a nice tailwind on my Northbound commute. Pretty sure I could have got a Strava PR on both Gilmerton Road and Queen's Drive if it hadn't been for all of the single-occupancy vehicles driving down the middle of the road, holding me up...

@SRD I have been passed by at least two spikey tyred bikes on the canal towpath in the last week. Seems to be working.

I suppose we should be grateful to them, but I prefer the cold.

Facebook memories reminds me that 3 years ago today there was snow on the Pentlands.

According to pictures from friends snow has already hit Scotland and as November hasn't yet ended that headline is true.

Tonight's wind was fast and bulbous, warm and into my teeth straight from The Azores. Shared the drafting with Muir wood crescent man though was about to take another turn on the front when he indicated he was turning right. All done in a jolly spirit of camaraderie.

I passed through a few incipient frost pockets on the way home, in low/cold/still sections.

Quite disappointed that the reported ‘approach of winter’ is simply a drop from balmy early autumn temps to about 8C peak

The properly warm clothes will continue to be untouched for a few weeks yet

There are quite large variations in the weather in Scotland just now. Yesterday for example, nice during the day here, sunny and becalmed across the east coast. However a cold, sharp easterly picked up in Dundee by late afternoon, bringing with it thick fog, which when caught in street lamp rays looked exactly like billowing smoke being blown westwards. Yet early evening in Edinburgh was relatively warm, with a very light northerly breeze and no hint of fog. Today we have glowering overcast skies but not much happening.

Colder weather on the way from Wednesday, it would appear...

Today I have been following an unhelpful sequence

    1. Put on work suit at work
    2. Cycle to meeting
    3. Get caught in vicious wee shower
    4.Stop to put on waterproofs
    5. Watch as rain stops
    6. Cycle in waterproofs
    7. Change socks and shoes
    8. Repeat from point 2

How many waterproof layers do you have on?

Assume he's now cocooned in about seven or eight layers of waterproof & significantly sweaty on the inside.

    NEPN seemed gritted.

Dug out my longs this morning, they're running trackies and they're probably a little well ventilated for on the bike.
