Some various frost on various back roads this morning.

Lots of footpaths gritted up near me which is a nice surprise.

Somewhere in between "rain" and "sleet" on my way to work today.

The towpath was quite ok between Polwarth and Heriot-Watt at around 9 am this morning, which I was relieved to find out. There were a few small patches of ice, but they were easily avoidable. Heriot-Watt campus very heavily gritted.

The MET weather app issued a yellow warning of wind to me for Wednesday an hour or so ago. Looking at MET and BBC forecasts, I can see that the wind looks like it is going to peak on Wednesday, but at a maximum speed of ~20 mph, which hardly seems like it is worth a weather warning?

    Posted 5 years ago #
  9. BBC has it gusting at up to 47mph in Livi on Wed afternoon, which sounds worthy of a warning to me.

@galaxy interesting. It seems unlikely that the wind will speed up significantly between Edinburgh and Livingston. I will await an update of one or other of these forecasts...

    Ice, anyone?
Completely freaked myself out cycling up to Gillespie Crossroads and bailed onto the train. I dodn't think it was actually icy but my head was completely gone.
I did look at the forecast and thought it would be OK. I'll be sticking to rain and wind for the rest of the winter.

@fimm Same here. Based on the forecast I thought it would be fine but I got to the towpath at 6.30am and bailed on. Went back home, changed cloths, asked for a lift and went for a walk. Livingston paths were rather white.

Yeah the tram path from the bridge to the Balgreen stop looked a bit treacherous I decided to risk it anyway but it was slightly unnerving.

  14. Doesn't seem to be much grit on the roads out Livi way either, certainly less than last year.

Linlithgow this morning was treacherous and only my ahem catlike reflexes prevented me from taking a spill. I'll get the spiked tyres on to warm as soon as I get home I think.

The railway path from Livi North station was very slippy yesterday, and had more visible frost today - the first wee incline heading westward becomes a challenge to get started on....

The towpath was fine this morning with just a little frost at Wester Hailes, but that was around 9 am. In fact, I saw somebody walking along NMW wearing a shirt this morning...

The MET app just updated me on the wind warning - now that I look at it closer, it is seemingly only warning me about this because I have Preston set as one of my saved places.

I was surprised at the ice on the Silverknowes Path this morning especially when there didn't seem to be any in Davidsons Mains Park. Just about fell off after putting my foot down when giving way when joining from Tesco.

yep, currently nursing several cuts from a tumble on Barnton Avenue on black ice this morning. totally caught me by surprise and i'd only said to myself about 5/10 minutes earlier that i need to be careful going through the cramond brig micro-climate as that could be icy.

was No.2 in a train of 4 bikes within 50 yards...only one to tumble but it was nice of the other guys to stop and ask how i was.

I can confirm that it most certainly is not t-shirt weather.

Got the bike out yesterday and discovered that my light-touch lubrication programme which has done so well in keeping the drivetrain clean wasn't so great after the roads were WITHOUT MY BEING NOTIFIED salted.

Oh dear, I oiled mine yesterday morning and noted that it too had a spot of red on it. I should probably check it for post summer wear, which is a job I find easier not to use a micrometer for.

big wind into my teeth this morning, wernt down WoL Path, leaf mulch a plenty except on the 1km of Ultitrec that was clean and dry.

In an outrage the wind is going to remain strong but start blowing from the West just in time for my commute home.

13'C at the moment! My lunch time cycle was disgustingly hot and sweaty, even with a t-shirt...

Ugh side gusts at Great King St crossing of Dundas St very nearly had me off with a taxi too close for comfort off my aft quarter. (I hate that the D St descent choice is "brake and travel squeezed into the door zone while car after car passes too close" or "keep pace with traffic with someone driving up your back wheel, constantly tensed for traffic pulling out / across you at junctions or the remaining stretch of moonscape surface pushing you onto the nasty seam in the tarmac".)

Very disconcerting to suddenly find myself cycling on the wrong side of the B729 after a gust of wind caught me. Fortunately, this being rural Dumfriesshire, I had the road to myself at the time.

I once found myself riding full tilt down the pavement of Dundas Street after an East-West gust at that junction. Totally involuntary.

Swapped tows and wisecracks with chap from kingsnowe tonight. He said it was a beautiful night. I said it was balmy et cetera.

Was offered a lift by Balerno couple. The husband was coming in to pick the wife up instead of her cycling so We agreed when I left her at the office car park we would see each other later. Did take until Gillespies X road for them. Catch me. I declined the kind offer as I had the tea to get at The Jet Garage (now known as Sainsburys)
