Absolutely stunning sunrise across midlothian from the top of the pentlands this morning. No ice on the hills as it hadn't gotten as cold as expected, however the damp air and cold wind made things pretty chilly. Toes absolutely frozen by the time I got home. Haven't had quite that much "toe terror" in the shower for a while.

    "toe terror" adopting this phrase.

Inspired to spend a night in Balerno soon so I can do a Pentland sunrise commute (just not committed enough to commute via Pentlands to Newington from Stockbridge...).

It was a beauty. THe Morning Star was just under a crescent moon.

Big jam on A70 so cut through the Cherry Tree estate and swung onto little path twixt it and Currie to spot great view of the Bridges all twinkling lights with the Kingdom Beyond.

Bottled it. Ground looks really damp and it's to be cold tonight.

When I got home I took the not quite fitted rack off the mtb and shuffled the stable round. Mtb with spikes tomorrow.

Frosty and slippy pavements in bits of south Edinburgh.

    Gritters out too.

Shortly after I overtook what turned out to be a cautious cyclist on the canal towpath at Wester Hailes, I started to feel the rear of my bike losing traction sporadically. I slowed down and ended up bailing out onto the road at Polwarth after overtaking an even more cautious cyclist just beyond Meggetland. I can't say that I enjoyed the road experience much, but I didn't fancy finding out what state the plaza outside Boroughmuir High School was in given its propensity to turn into an ice rink. I suspect that my rear tyre is in need of replacement, but in the short term I'm now thinking either a bus or my 27.5+ MTB tomorrow; I'm not super-keen to have it covered in gritting salt so soon though...

Couldn't find my cycling gloves* and wore a pair of dressy leather gloves instead. Fingers too numb to ring my bell. Ice starting to sparkle.

*Bottom of my pannier of course.

Cycled home the Very Long way, which involved Frogston Road Eastbound, just as it was starting to frost up. Which I didn't realise until I was doing ~35 mph and started to see the frost.
Nothing exciting, just a bit of a brown trousers moment - it'll be bad tomorrow morning for anyone cycling along untreated routes in the morning.

Just walked the basin to the plaza on the way to the pub/cinema. Didn't feel or look too bad yet, but I had newish Vibram-soled multi-purpose shoes on. I didn't see any cyclists braving it.

It was a beauty. The Morning Star was just under a crescent moon.

It was indeed. I grabbed my camera when I saw it.

    Microastronomy no.2

I came home on the Shawfair-Loanhead-Roslin path and it was jolly cold. It took me three miles just for my fingers to warm up. The grass was slightly crunchy underfoot when I stopped at Dryden Farm to look at the stars.

Venus spotted from Dalgety Bay this morning as well.

Was cautious on way home and thought it was slippy at times, but made it home without incident.

Just been out and pavements already very slippery. A glorious starry night, Orion rising in the SE.

    Studs going on tonight.

I saw the crescent moon with the morning star in her arms as well. Lovely sight.

The Old Dalkeith Road side of Inch Park was a bit of an ice rink. You'd think I'd have learned from coming off last year, but apparently not. Thankfully stayed upright, but a nice little rear wheel slide was fun.

Ground was sparkly on the ride home this evening, and I did see someone scraping ice from their car. Fleming HQ weather station is showing 1.8C at the moment.

I have just wrestled the studded tyres onto the Brompton. I think this qualifies as an 'achievement'given that there wasn't too much swearing involved. The only downside of the exercise was realising what a dreadful state the poor bike was in. Everything was gritty and dirty and sad looking. There was even rust on the frame. Worst of all was the discovery that one of the pedals has completed lost the cone from its bearings and was flapping about sadly and I hadn't noticed. I am ashamed at the state of it.

Anyway it's now got studded tyres on it.

Wasn't sure the studs were necessary; the path down to the balgreen tram was a bit ropey but passable most of the rest was fine until Telford.

The path approaching the Red Bridge was an ice rink, saw a few folk sensibly pushing. Cruised over that but would have a come a total cropper when I forgot my self coming down the west granton access path and the bike slipped and then the studs caught. Phew...

Very bad black ice (fell off my bike very quickly) around Bruntsfield (Montpelier/Viewforth). Roseburn path ramp icy. Also very bad around Craigleith.

It's very icy on the paths. There was an ambulance at the 5 ways, didn't see what had happened. Also the Lindsey road entrance to the path was thick ice, a chap warned me as I approached as he'd just come off. In Leith I saw a woman slipping on pavement ice. Thanks goodness for studded tyres. Take care out there people.

I can second that! Didn't even put studs on today. Had an off turning into NEPN from Lynsey Road. Whole path hasn't been touched. Really disappointing. Roads from Bonnyrigg all the way to Ocean Terminal were fine. No damage to self but now have a bent crank..always be worse I guess

Currently walking from 5 ways to Crewe Toll and it would appear I'm far from alone. Think a complaint en masse would work for next time?

Restarting path between Hawkhill and Restalrig Road ungritted but passable. Hawkhill slope frosty rather than icy. Raised tables on Lochend Butterfly Way megaslippy, but after dancing sideways on one foot and two wheels I just managed to stay upright.
Footways around Leith Links looked fairly ropey, with the roads little better.

commute littered with downed cycles. Mine was at the 90deg right at Hermits Croft b4 the Innocent, as I was picking myself someone else went down, quickly followed by another as I was pedalling away. hairy stuff.

Black ice all over Marchmont and Newington - stopped to help someone up after a nasty fall, and reminded myself for about the 5th time that stopping on your bike right next to where someone has fallen is extremely stupid. Managed to stay upright and not eject my passengers but it was touch and go... Ice tyres on tonight I reckon

Side roads a bit dodgy, almost came a cropper rounding a corner on Elliot road. Thankfully there is a skip there that I would have hit, which would have stopped me from hitting the nasty hard wall.

Newly surfaced path down from Craiglockhart Road North down to the canal an absolute ice rink/ice slide. Went down the grass. Canal path fine.

I decided to commute on the 27.5+ bike despite the risk of getting it covered in gritting salt, although by the time I actually set off close to 9 am it seemed that most of the frost and ice had melted on the MMW/NMW/canal towpath/Heriot-Watt route, assuming that there had been much in the first place. I imagine that it would still have been slippy on my standard commuter, but the plus-sized tyres seemed to maintain grip quite nicely and it was very easy going over the cobbles!

My fall came early when cycling out of the side from for my estate (of flats if that's the right term). Was traveling pretty slowly though and no cars so was fine, picked myself up and continued on. Stuck to the main roads after that and was fine.

Hope everyone else that falls today has similarly uneventful falls.
