All train services to Fife now cancelled due to a signal fault, standby for a longer cycle than planned if that's your usual option :-/

Thunder, lightning and torrential rain in South Queensferry this afternoon from 3pm.

The usual idiots not driving to the conditions on the roads too. Saw a double artic lorry have a wee hairy moment where the rearmost trailer wheels slipped a little and a couple of vans who were not driving anticipating the volume of surface water on the road, despite how hard the rain was stotting off everything in sight.

A lot of cyclists were without coats - perhaps they didn't see the forecast. At least they made me feel drier.

There is the potential for severe weather over much of the UK during Sunday as a depression tracks over, or close to, the UK. There continues to be a great deal of uncertainty in the forecast but the public should be aware of the risk of flooding due to heavy rain as well as very strong winds and large waves, particularly on the southern side of the depression. Given the unseasonable nature of the weather this could be sufficient to disrupt transport and make outdoor activities dangerous.

This is a particularly volatile situation, and this alert is likely to be updated as the event approaches. The public are advised to keep up to date with the latest forecasts and alerts through the weekend.

The sky has been turning a variety of weird colours. It has gone from yellow to pink to black in the space of about 30 mins.

There was thunder and lightning this afternoon too. That black cloud above our heads just now is very menacing. I suppose we're going to have really heavy rain again soon...

After a month of near normal temperatures

Not in Edinburgh! It's been a full 5°C below average for the past fortnight (or is it 3 weeks?). Today was utterly ridiculous - I had both arm and leg warmers on, for goodness sake!

Glad to hear the warmth is coming back. I'll put the thermals away again.

I was boiling today in jersey and rain cape, but that was this morning with wind behind. Different story tonight. Quite cold and very wet. Bracing myself to go back out.

Indeed. This morning, I was in t-shirt and shorts, and it was fine. But I had a tailwind going downhill. This evening was more brutal, but then again I always seem to find Friday evening commutes the hardest journey of all, for some reason.

Still in shorts (frankly it's got to be well below zero before I wear longs) but I must confess the long sleeved t-shirt and gloves have made an appearance.

A band of heavy rain will affect parts of the southern half of Scotland, the southeast corner of Northern Ireland, and later parts of northern England, north and west Wales, before clearing away to the southeast during Saturday morning. The exact location of the heaviest rain remains somewhat uncertain, with subsequent revisions to the area quite likely.

Tried to buy some waterproof trousers in two bike shops today with no joy. This deluge has been forecast all week. They know it is coming.

    "They know it is coming"

You mean 'and they refuse to buy extra stock' or 'and so did their customers - which is they've sold out'??

I bought my waterproof trousers in Aldi in Musselburgh on Monday. They had quite a few left when I was there both lycra and the standard type. Livingston has almost sold out had loads of jackets on Saturday now nearly all gone just womens one left in large.

Wish I had bought the full shooting match for 70 quid, as I will only up paying more slowing.

Still loads of bike gear in Gorgie Aldi this evening, including waterproof trousers.

Gorgie Aldi sounds like an Iron Curtain dictator.

Oh well at least it does not have the stock levels and choice of an iron curtain dictatorship, Livingston felt a bit "soviet" today in the cycling jacket department. May pop by Gorgie at the weekend see if any Jackets in large or extra large.

having listened to the wind howling around the windows since midnight and looked at the BBC weather app, I went out in full hurricane gear. in fact, almost took the bus. but it was fine.

SRD - you weren't the only one. Nearly every cyclist I saw this morning was equipped for the end of days.

I wimped out and got the bus, but wish I had taken the bike.

Expected terrible things (aka usual Scottish weather) after listening to last night's wind. In reality, by the time I went to work it was warm and only a wee bit moist.

A slow moving active cold front will be reinforced as a shallow wave runs northeastwards overnight Friday into Saturday. This will lead to some heavy and persistent rainfall, with 20 to 40 mm possibly quite widely across the warning area, while a few locations may see in excess of 60 mm, much of this falling within a few hours Despite the recent dry conditions, this may lead to surface water flooding.
