For anyone else wondering what the difference between freezing rain and hail is.

Basically, freezing rain is rain which is supercooled (below freezing temperature, but still liquid), so freezes on contact with the ground, creating sheets of ice.

In Canada, the real danger is not freezing on contact with the ground, but with trees and wires. the trees get so heavy they topple over, and bring wires (and sometimes houses) down. or with enough ice buildup, they'll come down without any trees at all, just from their wait.

Time is a man made concept. Therefore, 'when' is not a relevant thing to think about. Just know that it will happen, yesterday or tomorrow.

Haven’t looked outside yet but bbc weather app suggests precipitation start delayed.

Hope it materialises! Wouldn't be the first weather warning I've acted on in vain :)

Bah, the guy who was meant to finish roughcasting my garage today says he's not going to chance it with the snow / rain expected this afternoon.

Forecast much better for tomorrow. Wise to reschedule cycle. Is roughcaster also rescheduling for tomorrow? Roughcast on my garage is very old. One bad crack but living with it. What is it about garages and roughcast?

Standing by all my bailing decisions - train from Kingussie to Perth this morning, and now training it home tomorrow.

The past hour and a half looking out the Pitlochry Dam Visitor Centre Cafe have brought darkness by day, strengthening icy winds, & now gusts full of sleet. Near froze my feet off of the Slochd yesterday, and that was at least sunny. Oh well! Off to peruse the sale rack in Escape Route...

@unhurt - Escape Route - owner has done a fair amount of ski-mountaineering - Bheinn a Ghlo being one of the higher local places along with Ben Lawers.
Good you got a cycle in on a short end of year day.

I did a quick spot of Christmas-type shopping in town around lunchtime – I ought to have been hungry but I had a Proper Lie-In this morning and had a suitably late breakfast – and after a quick visit to LB I headed homewards. It was starting to spit with rain as I passed the clock at Morningside so I decided to ride straight home rather than go visiting, in case it worsened. So far, the freezing rain has been gentle, though the wind is picking up.

We're dishing out LB festive cards with seasonal frozen canal scene this year. @arellcat got one and free parking for bike! To enter into Christmas retail spirit we should have incorporated a discount voucher but we leave that to the others.

@laidback, surely like in black adder Xmas Carol. You just need a good story then you knock off hundreds of pounds?

Heavy wet snow sleet still coming down in Pitlochry. Hopefully won't freeze overnight or Sunday will be horrible.

Our spy on the ground over towards Glenshee just reported in at 7pm ...

"we got slammed by the storm, with the power out completely for 24 hours - it only just came back on in the last half hour - and no one could get out or in the village for most of the day! I’m hoping the roads will be open tomorrow. Other than that it’s beautiful and snowy"

Icy on untreated roads in Morningside at present. Mini-Greenroofer took a tumble off his scooter onto the slidy pavement.

Edinburgh roads seemed OK. Icier in Livingston. I stick to the roads here.

Side roads and cycle paths on the south side were all untreated and had large areas of black ice. Cyclist in front of me went down hard, badly scraped but otherwise ok.

Paths were very slippy this morning and more salt in a packet of crisps than on the roads round me.

I decided to take the road bike today given it was meant to be warmer and I needed my panniers so didn't have my studs. Squeaky bum.

I came off this morning on Whitehouse Loan near the junction with Whitehouse Terrace. It was so icy that I had to walk back several meters to retrieve my bike.

Fortunately, the car which had been tailgating me after Strathearn Road had backed of a little at that point although not as much as I would have liked. The driver stopped to check I was ok which was nice of her but being that I was already grumpy about her driving before I hit the ground, she didn't catch me at my best!

I warned the other folk on bikes coming out of the Astley Ainslie including a couple of parents cycling with their children. It is a shame that such a popular route for active travel to School remains untreated.

All roads were very slippy around Roslin this morning, but fine once I was on the mainer roads like the A7003. I was glad to be on three wheels, otherwise I would have fallen, but even so I managed about three powerslides, not all intentional.
