/@srd, you sure you bumped into the colleague before he/she came off? Seriously. Made error of going up onto the towpath this morning. Had to take it very gingerly indeed.

@jdanielp as you can image the towpath is nice and grippy today :)

@bill hooray! Back to the hybrid just in time to carry stuff home from work for the weekend in my pannier bags :)

@jdanielp the towpath is nice and dry

@bill excellent! Looks like it might snow tonight though just to mix things up again...

Freezing cold in Livingston this morning but not particularly icy...
Posted 5 years ago # -
A good test of my cold weather gear this morning- did an extra detour to Cramond and along the seafront to Granton Eastern Breakwater to pick up a veloviewer square I was missing. After over 2 hrs and nearly 30 miles everything was in pretty good shape except for my feet which were definitely beginning to suffer.
Got to work, looking forward to warming them up in the shower to find that there was no hot water left.

Massive ice rink on way into town today at Shandon. Burst pipe. Had to go on other side of road to avoid

Pavements icy round my way.

From the BBC Scotland website;
Commuters warned to expect snow showers
Police urge drivers to exercise caution as the Met Office issues a yellow warning for snow and ice across much of the country.
So we'll be fine.

Kirkwall all white this morning. Two snowflakes on the Met Office app all morning. I have to drive and I've lost my fingerless gloves.

The towpath just wet in the city at 6am but then started to be wet twinkly around Wester Hailes and continued to be wet twinkly all the way to the west. Country roads with a layer of wet ice. Livingston has a bit of snow. I saw one cyclist coming down on a path and I decided to stick to the roads (and I ended up getting lost in Livi).

To confirm what bill says, slushy snow in Livingston, roads fine (especially if you know where you're going... ;-) )
Posted 5 years ago # -
@bill glad you found your way! It is miserable enough to tempt me on a bus this morning, but likely plus biking.
Posted 5 years ago # -
Decided to risk the ice for the cover of mud guards, I think I made the right call, a few slushy bits but nothing that seemed to affect traction.

@fimm haha! :D I always get lost here when I try a new route -- I would say that the roads are not laid out in the most straightforward way. But then most of people in the company also only know how to get to/from work, big Morissons and maybe one of the train stations.
@jdanielp I think it's not a bad idea to bus today. I am worried what the conditions will be like in the evening.

Ice bike back in action!
Took me an age to set up this morning (with lights etc) and then I can completely bemused by the gears (which go the opposite way to my other mtb)Posted 5 years ago # -
Weird conditions in Fairmilehead this morning, on foot heading to the local GP surgery. Sleet was falling but not settling, there was no obvious ice on the pavement and al though wet the surface generally felt perfectly OK. Except that every so often you'd feel your foot slip - but looking back there would be nothing to indicate why. Perhaps just enough slush build up to feel insecure but not actually enough to provoke a prolonged slide? Occasional slip'n'grip could perhaps have felt a bit dodgy on the bike.
Looks likely to be a lot icier this evening, and for the rest of the week, according to the Met. Take care out there.

I took the plus bike although would have been fine on the hybrid this morning. The only frosty/icy bits that I saw were at Heriot-Watt. This evening should be interesting.

@bill "...that the roads are not laid out in the most straightforward way..." and the award for understatement of the century goes to...
I agree. I also have the advantage that my "station to office" (from Livingston North) route is about 3km. I occasionally use Livingston South but have yet to perfect a good route there. I actually came into Livi South last week and just stuck to the roads as it was icy and I had no idea which off road routes might be clear!Posted 5 years ago # -
Looked fine when I set out around 8:15 this morning. After almost falling off when I hit black ice I gave up and cycled home. Bus for me today.

CdF can easily accomodate both Schwalbe 35c Winters and full mudguards, but you know that I'm sure

Missed that bax. Opted to keep the cdf on normal tyres and go with studs on the mtb I think next time I'll go the other way, keep the mtb with normal tyres and fully winterise the cdf.
Posted 5 years ago # -
Bits were very wet this evening and bits were looking a bit sparkly mtb tomorrow I think.
Posted 5 years ago # -
The towpath seemed ok as I cycled from Heriot-Watt to Morningside just now. I was impressed by the lack of standing water or ice around Bridge 8 Hub given how wet it was earlier. It will certainly be frosty tomorrow.

Snow! (Just a smidgen in West Edinburgh)

Frost on cars and streets and bins in EH6. Didn't check if the bin was frozen shut when I took it out; hopefully it'll still flap open when inverted and shaken by the lorry.
