Lovely morning for a ride...crisp and clear.
Also, my beard froze.

Having a wee play with the Trunk Road Gritter Tracker:

Would be good if local gritters were tracked too.

Inverleith Pond is starting to melt a bit, but the ice is a couple of inches thick in places. Presenting an exciting challenge to some lads this afternoon. Ball retrieval developed into challenging one another to jump up and down - with eventual predictable and entertaining (to everyone but the jumpee) effects. Fun to watch, and everyone very good natured! Even the lad who went through - then fell full-length trying to scramble out.

Mad how the world just thawed in an hour.

@jdanielp the towpath is once again in it silver-white coat, perhaps MTB?
Posted 5 years ago # -
@bill I was expecting a bit of frost, but not necessarily that much this morning! Thanks for the heads up.

Silver-white coat of ice on Broom House path and many side streets.

Got the bus again today due to continuing lurgy - the pavements around the Pleasance and Holyrood Road are absolutely lethal - I slid most of the way down the Pleasance and around the corner onto Holyrood Road.

I avoided the canal as it looked decidedly dicy. Even main roads had a decent coating of frost where cars hadn't run over it a few times.

Took the cdf this morning the frost wasn't that bad but it occurs that if it does rain this afternoon the ride home might be a bit.. dicey.

As everyone said even the main roads were a bit frosty. I was sliding back (or more like staying in one place while still pedaling) when I joined Wilkieston Rd from Cliftonhall rd. I thought for a moment that my bike broke...

Main issue this morning was thick fog with visibility down to 20-30m. It disappeared just as I came off the FRB. After that had a glorious frosty ride down to Cramond, then rode out to the island, the upper parts again submerged in fog.

A colleague remarked to me that the towpath felt slippier this morning than it had been last week, despite looking similarly frosty. I was unable to agree with the statement due to having ridden the plus-tyred MTB after bill's tip off, thus not experiencing any noticeable lack of grip. I don't look forward to cycling it home in rain, but if that rain is turning at all icy then I will be very glad of it.

That was a little bit wet! At least all the ice seemed to be gone.

Indeed. I need some waterproof socks for future wet weather MTB action... Hopefully it won't freeze tonight!

Sexy mist in Stockbridge this morning. Made Inverleith Park all atmospheric.

Loads of frosty patches and sections on the towpath. Also ice on the wester hailes S-bend (at least two hours ago)

Damn.

Pavement down to the school were seriously treacherous this morning. Glad I'm off today or I'd have been on the normal tyres and probably on my bum.

After some deliberation, I decided to take the hybrid this morning despite bill's warning, thinking that an extra few hours would make the difference. Just before joining the towpath, I spotted Luke from Biketrax who warned me that the towpath was "sheet ice", which concerned me. I then passed piosad on Lower Gilmore Place, but he did not look concerned. I cautiously set off along the towpath only to realise that Boroughmuir Plaza was merely wet to the east, but became distinctly icy as I proceeded west. An oncoming cyclist shouted to warn me that it was slippy as the path began to narrow, but I rolled slowly over it without incident. Beyond that, there was the odd patch of frost, mostly around Kingsknowe and Wester Hailes, and the 'S' bend was slushy rather than icy. I dismounted for the Slateford Aqueduct just in case, bit it seemed to merely be wet. All in all I think I made the right decision. I'm glad to have the flexibility to head in after 9 am though...

@jdanielp I am glad you made it in OK. It was quite odd that some sections were completely fine and then suddenly some that definitely were not. As you say Kings Knowe and Wester Hailes (and then Ratho) were the most frosty. I abandoned the towpath in Ratho and stayed away from the frosty verges. All paths in Livingston looked frosty, so I stayed away from them as well.

@bill thanks. Unfortunately, my colleague who found it a bit slippy yesterday morning had a minor off on ice while attempting to join the towpath at Kingsknowe this morning.
Posted 5 years ago # -
@jdanielp ouch! hope they and the bike are OK.
Posted 5 years ago # -
@bill indeed. Bike and, more importantly, recently bought bike clothing were ok. Colleague not ok but not bad, and seemingly mostly just relieved about the bike/equipment.

@jdanielp seeing the temperature drop to 1-2C deg at 6am (and remembering how wet the towpath was last night) I got feart and bailed on cycling in. Bichael and I got a lift and we are going to cycle back instead. Unfortunately cannot advise on the towpath conditions.

Patchy ice in Gilmerton, including on the roads.
