Network Rail has said the West Highland Line between Glasgow and Oban, and Glasgow and Fort William will remain closed for at least a week to repair damage at five sections of the track.

Dodged the shower yesterday by waiting until it passed over but today feels like a more persistent precipitation

It's a bit damp up in the Cairngorms too:

I can't find any suggestion that Carrbridge has looked like this for almost 100 years:

Some of the heaviest rain I have ever seen over Heriot-Watt about twenty minutes ago. It's merely raining hard now.

Had two waterproof jackets on on the way home. Rain still got through.

One day where maybe an old school rain cape would have been a good idea...

Did not dodge weather tonight. Phone went when I was cycling home. Pulled into bus shelter on Lanark Rd just west of the footbridge onto towpath.

Was Mrs Garto wondering if I wanted picked up in the car. Just at that point there was an explosion of lightning just over th road with black smoke and everything. It was siling down with stair rods of rain too. I gladly accepted the lift.

    Stay safe

My old skool rain cape did fine for the short ride home from Haymarket - though I think I missed the worst of the rain. Being in a shortish skirt was good too.

Having been out at lunchtime and sweated my face off I didn't bother with any sort of second layer on the way home. I did wear a cap to keep droplets out of my eyes but at one point the water was still soaking through it and running down my forehead. Might have to fish out my old pair of bikeshoes for the morning as I doubt there are sufficient old newspapers in the house to dry out the current pair.

Had fun watching cars trying to drive through the flood on Bankhead Avenue. This BMW was quite special, rather than turn around he tried to mount the pavement before powering into the water with predictable results

You can't leave it at that cliffhanger!

    What happened next?

...@Frenchy - the BMW driver lost their NCD, I assume.

It was incredibly wet on my way home: Gogar Station Road was submerged for its whole length. I used the @wingpig approach and just accepted that I was going to get wet feet. The water was actually surprisingly warm.

That BMW driver was being absurd!

Couldn’t even turn round, which was obviously the right decision!!!

(Though reversing first would have been wisest.)

A few of us at work waited until about 6pm in case the rain would ease, and it did, more or less, after spending quite a lot of time dotwatching on lightningmaps.org*.

I've been using infernal combustion this week and rode through a little flood between Dumbryden Drive and Hailesland Road, but the rest of the commute was fine. There had definitely been flooding on the Old Pentland Road – plenty of gravel and detritus – but it had mostly drained. My motorbike has a fording depth of over 2ft, so I was never troubled like that BMW driver. I kind of wish I'd gone exploring on my way home, but I had a cracking headache all day.

    * Check out the USA right now! Blimey. The eastern seaboard is really getting it.

To be honest, I was more interested in their reaction when they opened the car door.

At least they appear to strap in before opening the door. There is clearly something wrong with the BMW at the start as there is a flashing orange light on the mirror where other marques put the indicators.

My favorite bit was zooming through a bit puddle in Inverleith park. Absolutely drenched tonight and it felt like someone was throwing buckets of water at me!

I opened lightningmaps just after witnessing the flash (reflected in a window) and bang of the purported St Cuthbert's event but it didn't show up. Haven't been that close to a strike since one in the middle of Inverleith Park in about 2015 when a few of us were running around the perimeter.

It was genuine, II work just up the road, there was also a strike on the building site in morrison street.

I guess it depends on the density of the detector network?

Brilliant commute home last night, I was all waterproofed up (including some excellent 'rain legs') but it wasn't actually raining much when I left, actually a bit disappointing after the biblical downpours we had watched out of the windows.

However it soon caught up with me at Barnton, happily I quickly realised it was quite warm despite rapidly being soaked through, so was good fun the whole way. Big floods on Burnshot road in places, though pedal-able.

The lighting was exciting at first, but I then started thinking I'd been a bit stupid, as a couple of flashes seemed quite close. I kept faith in the fact that there were always higher objects around me (although there was an exposed stretch above the airport below Craigie's Deli which had me nervous) but in future might check forecasts before I decide to pedal back. I also had to laugh at myself instinctively ducking every time I heard another crack and rumble of thunder, if it was going to hit me it already would have!

Got home to Kirkliston soaked but with a massive grin on my face, best commute since 'Beast of the East'!

The rain doesn’t appear to have put people off: still loads of people cycling this morning and the bike racks at work were almost full.
