There was a convoy of wee gritter tractors leaving Blackford depot when I passed on my way home.

    Brrr.
Decided not to attempt my long commute this week. I'm becoming more feart of ice the older I get.

@fimm I went through Balerno and then RAF, Kirknewton, Mid Calder, Livingston this morning. It's the first time I deviated so much on the morning ride but my standard route would be covered in ice (based on how much water there was last night). Roads were mostly dry or gritted. The only bit with visible frost was on A70 on the up-and-downy section west Balerno.

Similar to you I am getting more and more terrified of ice and frost. I cycle very, very slowly these mornings.

@bill thank you for that. That's my usual route, I think. It definitely gets more grit than the back roads.

There was a convoy of wee gritter tractors leaving Blackford depot when I passed on my way home. There was one on Gilmerton Road stopped in the cycle lane when I passed. I assume it was gritting the pavement rather than the cycle lane, however.

The Meadows was frosty and a little icy on the surface. I found this out by taking the MTB along the track parallel to NMW and experiencing a number of muddy and wet moments.

The towpath was extensively frosty and also icy in places.

Heriot-Watt Campus didn't appear to have been gritted, at least not anywhere near as much as usual if it had been.

Cold snap has brought many fluffed up tits (X3 species) to my garden. And a fat and relentless grey squirrel.

@Iwrats have you still got that air rifle? It's scaring off the birds & gnawing holes in my feeders (EVEN THOUGH THERE IS FOOD ON THE GROUND TOO).

My feet are cold & I'm in the flat. May need to invest in merino baselayer for toes.

@unhurt have you considered custom squirrel fur socks?

Take care. I was just in a taxi and it slipped on ice at the roundabout by the Sherriffhall park and ride

Rained a little in the night. Might be slippy. I noticed the plant watering outside Loudons second cafe in east market street had turned the square into an ice rink 4.30pm last night returning from moray house where I daftly mentioned buenos aires has 50% of population in therapy at a Scot Gov think tank. (Not as off on a tangent as it seemed if we want to scale up the national response to mental health - how far should we go??)

Frosty Pocket everywhere. Plenty of black ice on paths, pavements and minor roads in and out of the city.

Russell Road zigzag slippy. Sandport slippy, but because of oil rather than ice.

Lots of icy paths and roads in Murrayfield. Some grit appeared to have been spread at the Craigleith NEPN junction. Overall it was OK on the Telford Path though.

Opted for a lift this morning. My street was treacherous enough on foot.

Really need to fit those studded tyres.

Conditions were ok between Morningside and Craiglockhart Road North. The relatively newly laid path between there and the pedestrian bridge over the canal looked like a bit of an ice rink so I bumped over the grass. The towpath was on and off semi-treacherous looking, which wasn't stopping some people from cycling at a fair rate, but I only felt a minor slippage on a couple of occasions as I took it easy. Heriot-Watt Campus was back to fully over-gritted status.

The off-camber corner on Colinton Road, downhill from the Firrhill mini roundabout, was a bit scary this morning when I spotted black ice or something approximating it while I was mid-corner. Fortunately I'd taken the offside lane to avoid the worst of the tarmac, and thus created considerable space to recover* a skid, but the thought of burying the front of the torpedo in the Armco doesn't bear thinking about.

    * if the back end steps out more than a couple of feet, you are going round whether you like it or not, and you are going round before you can catch it, and you are going to highside if the tyre grips again.

On the bus again today, new straight away I had made the right decision as conditions were very slippy in the short walk to the bus stop.

Temperatures going up today so I should be back on the bike tomorrow.

Colder than forecast this morning. Roads icy until West Lothian border and then they started to be gritted. We stayed on A70 though hoping the sunrise would help but fearing the wee back road frost pockets.

We needn’t have worried as beyond Tarbrax there was a temperature inversion causing freezing fog. Treacherous. Really hard to get going in the cold and damp, We bailed at Apple Pie.

On the way home chap with telephoto lens trying for a fog shot near colzium. THen slightly bizarrely on the quickening crest I did the big scooping arm wave to indicate the car could overtake me and when it did the person in the car barked out the window at me like a dog.

Closer to Edinburgh, chaos driving open top sports car westwards. Boy was he going to get a shock.

    @gembo

Was just wondering about Glenbrook Rd. Is it one of the ones you avoid on frosty mornings?

This afternoon the weather/roads were all fine between your gaff and Linlithgow.

@MrSRD, due to the two sets of temporary traffic lights on the A70 heading out of Balerno this am there was a suggestion from the peloton that we take glenbrook road. Error, quite icy, so we took it gingerly. The corner of Glenbrook road and the A70 was very icy for a main road.

So yes @MrSRD avoid in the ice for sure
