Actually this very route A70-Glenbrook-Balerno being used as a rat run by drivers to avoid the lights - locals have spotted up to ten cars a day coming through

Got a pair of £4.99 ski gloves from Aldi yesterday. Seem just right for this morning.

    @gembo

That tracks with my very occasional observations. There has been a lot more traffic (relatively) on Glenbrook, the last few times I've been through.

Very cold overnight but doesn't seem to have been any rain. Saw a lot of frost about but not the kind of ice that causes problems. How about others?

Similar in south Edinburgh, although I stuck to the main roads.

The canal towpath was quite frosty but I didn't see any ice, although the canal itself was frozen in places - I suspect that I would have been ok on the hybrid but had already decided on the MTB. The Meadows was far colder than last week which I found out by taking the track parallel to NMW. It was crunchy under-tyre this morning where it was muddy and wet under the frost last week.

    Dear council,
Thank you for gritting the Roseburn path.

May I humbly suggest a couple of small tweaks?

    1) Must the path be gritted by a transit van that is the same width as the path.

    2) if it you must then must it be gritted at peak commuter time.

    3) if so, can you select a driver who understands they're not on the road and should slow down when encountering path users and not bole them off the path.

    Regards
One of three cyclists who dived into the ballast under one of the bridges.

The Hawkhill slope (UNGRITTED) is either re-freezing or never thawed.

The Water of Leith path is not frozen consistently between Juniper Green and the canal so my MTB, rucksack and, to a lesser extent, my commuting gear is now somewhat muddier than I hoped for. May head up that way tomorrow morning.

@steveo I hope you actually sent this.

I am on a bus because once again the sinuses explode. The bus is in State A (baltic) rather than the more common State B (sweaty roasting). I was warmer at the bus stop.

(State C - a comfortable temperature - may not actually exist except for a few blissful, transient minutes in any given day of bus movement.)

@unhurt nah I don't want to put them off gritting the path!

Unhurt, state C is in fact the average of the temperature across the year and is just right.

Sustained very low temps again last night but no sign of rain to have frozen into ice. So, in theory, just more frost then?

Frostiest morning in a while. Puddles are icy, but mostly just frost.

Five miles across town from South to West, mostly a mix of main & minor roads but a short stretch of cycle path. Lots of frost, no ice. Two jackets & no regrets.

It is <rule 2> cold out there.
As usual I can't comment on ice/gritting as I use roads at this time of year.

Freezing fog in west Edinburgh. Waiting for the RTCs to begin. :-(

That was a cold ride but main roads were fine this morning as long as you go where the cars go. Verges a bit frosty and icy. Went through Balerno again and A70 was nice and grippy.

Love the view at the RAF hill: Pentlands with some sunrise light in one direction, the Firth (often with haar) in the other.

@IWRATS: A couple of years ago, on a whim while in Decathlon, I picked up a pair of cheap, bright yellow backed winter gloves lined with some kind of polar fleece material. Can't remember exactly how cheap but definitely less than a tenner. They are toasty warm and have been great for all sorts of activities in frosty weather, including digging snow and especially cycling. Sadly Decathlon don't seem to do them any more so I won't be able to replace them when/if they do eventually expire. So these days I have to keep them strictly for cycling, and hope that they don't become casualties in any unexpected rider/terra firma interaction scenarios.

What a lovely morning for a cycle! I cycled up the Water of Leith (mostly frozen) as planned and enjoyed the views towards the Pentlands from the field that links the back of Juniper Green to Currie, and to the north of the city and Fife as I whizzed down Donkey Path to Heriot-Watt :)

Concerns about pollution and cold air combined with asthma (plus a little laziness) led me to take the bus this morning. I expect the experience will push me back onto my bike again shortly (it is a lot slower).

Fitted spiked tyres to the already heavy Surly with minimal swearing last night.

Now I am grippy but extraordinarily slow. Hmm.

I was wondering about getting another set of spikes for the singlespeed, or possibly just putting the existing spikes on it. The mudguards might handle them slightly better but I assume I'd rip more studs out braking and turning on a smaller, faster and more manoeuvrable bike.

@wingpig After you've fitted the spikes your bike will no longer be fast :)

I haven't lost many (if any) studs from my ~7 year old Marathon Winters which I use exclusively on a spare wheelset for my fixie. They usually get a few weeks use each year, maybe 50-60 miles/week.

Temperature is about to go up so hopefully no ice for a few days.

Neither bike is 'fast' in the fairy-whisker carbon-whippet sense, as both have racks, mudguards, dynamos, steel frames and panniersful of crap clipped to them, but one has a slightly lighter rack and slightly lower drivetrain weight.
My first set of spikes died, full of holes, after two winters. These are on their third or fourth (including a definition of 'winter' stretching almost to the vernal equinox) but I only need to get one more for the singlespeed's rear wheel as I can swap the front wheel about.

  28. First ride on my first ever set of winter tyres this morning. They do make a fantastic crunching noise, but I did notice a real drop-off in my usual speed.

If I can find out where to get a cheap-ish spare wheelset for my Boardman ADV8.9e, I can have two sets of wheels to swap between so I'm not wearing them out excessively on non-icy days....

Looks like the temps stayed just above freezing overnight, although very close to 0 in the early hours. No rain overnight as far as I can see. In theory any ice should be limited to the odd frozen puddle & frost. Would be interested to hear if you have a different experience.
