I think the frost caught people unawares today. Even the FRB was showing signs of being untreated.

Treacherous ice on the road in Dalmeny Park. I know because I took a good look at it while lying on my side. I should have heeded my own warning.

Not really an excuses for being caught out by the ice as there has actaully been a Weather Warning.

My temperature sensor didn't drop below 2.5C last night, but definitely signs of ice around the Gyle.

Somewhat off topic, but I've been looking at setting up outdoor temperature sensor(s) for a while - what setup do you use?

Having spent many years considering a DIY solution but without any actual time to make it. I added a netamo to my Christmas list a few years ago.

The outdoor bit works well and batteries last well over a year.

Jonty: Because there are a few websites that will give you retrospective hour by hour temps overnight, what I really wanted was a rain gauge to see if there was any overnight rain that might have turned to ice on a freezing road surface. Went with this one which is OK (can't get an hour by hour report of rainfall but will do an overnight total) which also has an outdoor temps. Works on wireless and stupidly easy to set up. https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00GXNEDME/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 (yes, Amazon, bad...)

No frost or ice this morning but still a bit of a chill to the wind. I generally find my eyes tearing up a little as I descend MMW and turn onto NMW as I adjust to the cold. This morning, the tears came that much easier than usual.

I got this one in April.

    Very pleased with it

    Does hour/day/month/total since start.

    Goes up in .3mm steps

Day starts at midnight, normally leave on day setting.

Interesting to see how fast it changes during heavy rainfall!

“The @metoffice has issued a YELLOW weather warning for #ice for large parts of the country. We have responded to a number of road traffic collisions already this morning. Please allow extra time for your journey and always drive to the conditions #PolScotControl #DriveSafe”

Looks like the grit that went down has been washed away. Stay safe

Raining in south Edinburgh, but there's still patches of ice underneath. Difficult to see where they are and they're extra skitey.

I didn't sense any ice on the way in from Eskbank, though I did go on the main roads all the way (incl A7 rather than Elginhaugh Bridge). Our wee street is never gritted - that was fine.

Thanks to the reminder from gembo, I dried off my chain at work, hoping to avoid the red chain of death.

BTW I can recommend the very cheap overgloves from Decathlon. I am very susceptible to cold fingers, but find these work better than undergloves (combined with winter gloves). I think it's because they cut the windchill.

Two crashes in my household this morning. One coming out of the underpass onto the innocent from niddrie and one going up the path behind the hospital to danderhall. One broken crank no damaged bodies thankfully. Time for studded tyres.

A little ice on the canal and the edges of the towpath but I would have been quite ok on the hybrid. It was a bit of a struggle on the MTB into the wind but it is a relative pleasure to glide over the cobbles and other bumpy bits.

I will not commute in Edinburgh on anything without a suspended seat post and forks. I've bottomed out my 65mm travel ones this winter on Leith Walk.

The Glasgow end of my commute along the Canal through Maryhill had black ice like I've never seen before. So thick, I could barely walk on it, weirdest bike handling experience I've ever had, it was slipping all over the shop. hopefully it all melts through the day.

Oh yes and thanks to @Frenchy for the black ice warning. Guy skity kind on the wee roads.

Black ice everywhere at Meggetland today. Came a cropper and bashed up my elbow and hip. Think I'll be putting my winter studs on the front from now on.

@ianfieldhouse did you warn me coming down the path as I was going up?

Later in my commute I observed a lad bombing round a corner at the pleasance (he had not benefited from the fieldhouse hindsight). skinny tyres too.

I came off on black ice this morning, on the little hill as you approach Prestonpans on the coastal path. Dry on the west side. The east side is sharply downhill after a blind corner. I slid to the bottom on my bottom. Only realised I'd lost my saddle bag when I got home this evening.

    Should have been ok.

    Any ice reports this a.m.?

I know our West Lothian correspondent is currently in Poland where there is no ice.

Very frosty rather than icy here. Still slippy.
