    Wasn't as bad as I feared this morning (around 8). A few violent gusts moved me round the road a bit, but the rain wasn't coming down too heavily. Really warm too, so was just in short sleeves & bib.

    "Really warm too"

    And has been for more than 24 hours. Hardly dipped overnight - which must be unusual -

    @chdot - watch for a change in wind direction & a sudden temp drop some time this afternoon.

    Left home at 7.10 and wasn't too bad - only a sprinkle accompanied by mostly a tailwind. I've brought in extra layers though as the temperature is due to drop quite a bit for this evening.

    I really must remember that my soft shell isn't really more than shower proof!!

    Full spectrum immersion. People cowering under the Wester Hailes bridges. Perfectly timed car-splash in the face at the end. Kit weighs at least 10kg. Drying room smells like a pack of beagles. Kit most unlikely to be dry for return journey. Blecht.

    @IWRATS - that's a little gem of a post there. Perfectly put, and not a word wasted. Personally very glad to be working from home and off the bike anyway...

    First rule of Scottish winter cycling - always have a dry change of kit under/in your desk...

    "always have a dry change of kit under/in your desk..."

    I presume employers in 'hot desking' offices provide adequate storage??

    I have civvies in the office, but brought spare tights and socks in for home-time, as i figured it would be too warm to have radiator on to dry stuff out.

    I kitted myself out in my full winter waterproofs (which I recently re-waterproofed) and overshoes, but no didn't bother with any gloves. As I set out around half eight I was concerned that I had overdone it with the waterproofs since it seemed to be brightening and the rain easing... However, within 5 minutes, and for the next half hour, I was glad of my decision, but it did ease again as I approched work. I rolled through a very deep puddle just south of Hermiston House Road bridge after leaving the canal, which lapped against my overshoes despite the pedals being horizontal... Finally, I elected to park my bike in my office given that my lock was in the secure, covered cycle rack at work which was swamped in several inchs of muddy water.

    I don't think my (white) short-sleeved will be dry by hometime, but the dry long-sleeved (albeit dark green) underlayer I wasn't wearing this morning can be put on first to maintain visibility whilst reducing skin-proximal clamminess. My store of old newspapers in my locker has run out so my emergency wee little towel is stuffed in my shoes. Socks won't be dry but spares are. Inner shorts were mostly dry and outer shorts are dangling on a hatstand in the stupidly warm office-air.

    Zeroth rule of Scottish cycling - replace your jacket before it fails, not two years afterwards? My new one is safe and dry in the post between Wiggle and Castle IWRATS.

    @IWRATS

    So on the next rainy day it'll be the next instalment of the "Spot the cyclist with the new jacket" game...

    Or will you ride through a few puddles to get the well used look?

    Or the 4WD Short Cut

    I decided that a jacket was a bad idea this morning- I'd boil in the bag and be wetter than I was without...

    Whether I was right is another matter, but at least I wasn't cold...

  19. Where's wind coming from now, and more importantly where will it be tonight?

    Balcarres Street closed apparantly. I cycled through there this morning, fortunately before the proper deluge started.

    Wonder if the new building site ("assisted living") has flooded?

    Despite my full waterproofs, I didn't get especially hot and sweaty this morning, although I was taking the cycle fairly steadily. I was also anticipating the lowering in temperature, having decided that my winter jacket would be preferable to my lightweight summer jacket tonight.

    While I believed that I was cycling fairly steadily on my way to work this morning, my cycle computer appears to have recorded that my maximum speed was 186.1 km/h.

  24. Tried out my new Decathlon £19.99 waterproof jacket this morning at 6am. As expected, with it being 16C and a heck of an effort required pushing into a headwind for pretty much the whole ride, I was rather wet inside the jacket.

    Mind you, I was considerably less wet than I used to get on the rare occasion I wore my Lidl waterproof cycling jacket.

    Pity the '22mph with 40mph gusts' wind will have died off to a '9mph with no gusts' wind by this afternoon. I really wanted a strong tailwind all the way home.

    @threefromleith I averaged 45 km/h in Holyrood Park last night. I was still overtaken by cars however.

    Just checked my kit. Water has drained to lowest 10cm of each garment and pooled there. I have taken extraordinary steps to avoid that nameless sensation only produced by putting cold, wet synthetic clothes onto warm, dry skin.

    @jdaniealp,
    I assume you are using a wireless cycle computer and quite possibly had your lights set to something other than blindingly full power.
