No ice seen this morning around Eskbank. Seems quite nice. Due to wheeziness back on bus, but partly regretting this as the traffic is awful (easy to whizz past on the bike).

Proper blown across the lane by side-street wind funnels on Newington Road. Standard for the season.

Getting a bit bored with these morning headwinds, I must admit.

Me too that was brutal tonight.

Maybe only 3 walkers on the wol path and all lit up but boy was the towpath full of ninja peds and one runner who appeared from nowhere at speed and was invited to get some feckin lights

Right slog home there right enough. My ears were sore.

If you are running on the towpath it feels like everything is easy to see - until you nearly run into a walker. This is why I use my headtorch along there in the dark (it has a nifty rear flash as well) - I turn the front off unless there's a cyclist coming...

Me this morning as I left the flat: "Wait something is wrong: The trees don't seem to be moving and I can actually move my legs at decent cadence. Where has the wind gone? It makes my feel uneasy."

My some 30min later as I get to Ratho and West Lothian: "Oh, that's where the wind is. That's better now."

After last nights attempt to rush home into that wind todays tail wind was a welcome rest but jeez was it warm I wore the same stuff (insulation wise) I've been wearing all week and I cooked.

@fimm, yes many runners do light up and some peds use phones but unless I have the photon blaster on there are some surprises in store

had shorts on today as forecast indicated there waSA HIGHER TEMP AND SURE ENOUGH NO ICE. stretch up past old folks to canal a little greasy with the pre-ice but no slippy. Wind was where it has been and will be on the way home. Those to the west will smash it home

cycling South on Lothian Road last night I indicated to pull out to go into the bus lane to turn up Home Street. Taxi driver behind obliging slowed to allow me to pull out, but a massive gust blew me backwards and to the left - I did my best but it took me by surprise and took me a while to complete the manoeuvre - he shouted at me as he passed "Just ****ing move" - something I was indeed quite keen to do myself.

Nothing quite like the annual trials where one tests their commitment to cycle commuting.

    yes indeed

a heavyweight calvinist reward wrought with rigour

its the maintenance that gets my human blues

hosing down at end every second day so no fresh hell dare break loose in future rural dark

    brake blocks, rims, transmission, undercarriage

Roslin village was black ice everywhere. If I'd been on two wheels I'd've been off as soon as I'd left my driveway.

I stayed on the big roads on my way to Livingston this morning and saw water only in its liquid state until I got to West Lothian. But even then there were only patches of solid state on pavements and bits of the roads that the cars don't use.

If the yellow warning of ice means that they send the gritters out, then I am all for it.

EDIT: now I remember that all the paths in Livingston seemed to be covered in black ice

Few bits of ice at the edge of the Innocent between Bingham and the tunnel. Lots of ice on the path leading to the roundabout and Duddingston Row.

Canal access from Craiglockhart Road North had not been gritted and was the only patch of crazy ice. There was a one rider walking up the hill, and another bike parked next to the corner while a conscientious chap broke off branches and laid them over the ice at the corner to act as a warning to those approaching. I suspect that that corner is exposed to the wind and water draining from the grass which allows a build up of ice. Needs to be consistantly gritted though.

A friend who uses the NEPN came off her bike this morning because while the paths were gritted the approaches and exits weren't not. Bashed her head very hard - luckily she didn't have the one year old on the bike at the time. Really annoyed - why even bother gritting if you ignore the places people are turning and braking?
