Same in Gilmerton. Places that were gritted on Sunday were mostly still all right, but anywhere that wasn't is icy.

Livingston covered in snow. Roads covered in snow, compacted snow, ice and/or slush (depending which segment of the road).

First sign of snow was in Wilkieston and then it got progressively worse as I continued west.

Your mileage is obviously going to vary but although there was plenty of frost & some frozen puddles between the south & west of the city this morning I saw no signs of real ice. Although it was cold last night it looks like in the city at least temps only briefly dropped to zero so the rain that fell didn't freeze when it hit the ground.

The rain that fell on our flats roofs overnight is still frozen, and there are remnants of snow still on our lawn (we are at ~180m altitude). My outside thermometer is reading 2.3°C. North facing aspects of the Pentlands are white down to at least Muilieputchie at 300m, above old Swanston village (can't see lower than that from the house).

I reckon the pavements on the shaded south side of east-west roads round here will be quite frosty still, and shaded roads with a northerly aspect could be slippy.

Really icy as son as I crossed the bridge this morning - took the old railway line from Dalmeny To Newbridge which was frozen solid in any exposed areas - it really was beautiful. A8 Cycle Path East from Newbridge was just sheet ice. No attempt at gritting it.

A colleague told me that the roads are not gritted in Scotland when there is snow. He couldn't remember the reason. Anyone knows?

Several of my auto-colleagues had a spin or at least a slide in Livingston this morning.

@bill, Have you checked if one of your legs is longer than the other? My neighbour and uncle used to drive gritters for two different councils and got regular overtime whenever it snowed. The Neighbour took his entire family to Vegas off the proceeds of one winter. He was on night time overtime for several weeks on the trot.

Of course some roads are gritted more often and sooner than others.

Roads in the UK are cambered to cope with rain, which is our predominant form of precipitation. A cambered road is more difficult to plough effectively without physical contact between plough blade and tarmac. That's not to say that we don't grit the roads, though.

bill - what! Clearly your colleague missed page 8 of the National Winter Service Research Group Practical Guide for Winter Service - Treatments for Snow and Ice*. Which makes it clear that grit/salt should be used where there is snow on a carriageway that may be compacted by traffic.

    *this is a real thing.

thought I posted this from Transport Scotland

Ready for winter and severe weather
Our winter service operations allow the safe movement of users of the trunk road network and minimises delays and disruption to users caused by snow or ice.

Icy and slippy paths/pavements from East Calder westwards. Sections of roads also sparkly.

Quite a bit of black ice round the Innocent path this morning. I took a slight detour to avoid the ungritted Bingham end of the path and saw someone taking a tumble going down the hill from the KB/Peffermill Rd direction at the Duddingston Crossroads. Thankfully the rider seemed OK as it was thankfully a low-speed slip.
One of the reasons I left slightly later than normal too!

Given the lack of chat when I was getting ready to cycle this morning, I assumed that the towpath would be benign so took the hybrid. There was certainly evidence that had I been commuting an hour or two earlier, it would've been somewhat trickier. Looks like it will warm up a bit today.

@cyclecommute - I was missing anything that could be turned into lunch without actually cooking! Or I thought I was - turned out there were eggs, and some sliced bread in the freezer, phew.

I am very glad I don't have to cycle anywhere in this.

Scrambled eggs on toast at half past three (because I got distracted by a thing I was drafting).

But now I really DO need to go to the shop / library. Then back to laptop land for several more hours, bah.
