A trifle damp, roseburn path had several burns running down.

The towpath was more puddle than path in places, although the rain did actually ease for at least part of my cycle home.

There was a downpipe on Lady Lawson St squirting water from its base about eight feet into the air across the footway. Huge puddles on Lauriston Place which a few cars were not taking care to avoid.

@Gembo it does sound like you saw me as I was wearing lumberjack Jacket and flat cap last Friday, however maybe your riding glasses were dirty given that I cleaned
moofie earlier in the week. Maybe what you saw was reflected dirt from the road.

TO keep on thread, Riding home was rank today. Thankfully was on the cross bike but was filthy as well as soaked through. I did SORT of enjoy it in a way...

Huuuge puddles outside Haymarket yesterday when I was on my way home. I think I escaped the worst of the downpour, being merely a trifle damp rather than absolutely soaked...

Last night was biblical to the point of it being funny. The Ferry road path was a river. It's going to take a few days for my shoes to dry out.

I got some neoprene overshoes for christmas (they're designed for cycling shoes but will juuusst fit over pumps/ converse trainers). Best present ever. It felt miraculous how dry I was when I got home.

Big winds forecast for tonight, glad to be working from home today.

I cycled down Belford Road towards the art galleries last night just before 6 - the puddle there pretty much submerged my wheel. One car seemed to have got into trouble but it wasn't there on the way back after 7ish. Slightly terrifying cycling amongst the cars and poor visibility but also very entertaining... if wet.

    Just seen on twitter: https://twitter.com/TheForthBridges/status/1222905971241930754

The Forth Road Bridge is currently CLOSED to all traffic due to high winds gusting over 65mph.

The Queensferry Crossing remains open to all motorway traffic except double deck buses, thanks to its wind shielding.

Some quite scary sharp gusts at 5ish. A neighbour's fence has collapsed quite impressively.

There was no Met Office severe weather warning for Edinburgh for yesterday, despite the weather forecasters on TV a couple of days previously predicting gale force winds. There is one in place for Monday although winds here aren't forecast to reach 50mph. It was gusting 55mph around 5pm yesterday according to the Met Office - and their weather station is at Gogarbank is about 400ft lower that us. We had a quite scary shockwave-type gust against our sitting room window at around 5pm yesterday, which past experience suggests that the Blackford Hill weather station would have recorded peaks of 60mph+ at around that time (unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any data available online from that weather station post 2017).

It's the apparent inconsistency of the decision process for issuing warnings that grates.

Agreed with @ejstubbs and @unhurt above- Bridge was measured at 65mph gusts. Why was there no warning?

This is weird because there were fog warnings in place in the Lake District just at the time there were 'shock wave' gusts in Edinburgh.

@ejstubbs the Blackford Hill weather station was closed several years ago. It would have been interesting to see what it would have recorded yesterday, had some really unpleasant gusts near King's Buildings around 3pm.

@iwrats, are you sure there were fog warnings in the Lake District? There will have been 'mountain hazard warnings' on the mountain forecasts for low visibility, but these are different from 'National Severe Weather Warnings'.

The Met Office issues warnings based on 'impact', not wind speed, so despite there being 65mph winds on the bridge, the impact must have been judged to be less than yellow warning level. I'm minded to agree. Apart from high sided vehicle restrictions on the FRB, there was very little disruption due to the wind yesterday (although obviously their impact assessment takes no account of trying to cycle along Clerk Street!).

    @tarmachan
The bridge closes to High Sided vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians when gusts of > 50 mph are recorded. The staff I spoke to said that several barriers and other equipment had been blown over and "it was a mess" on the bridge. Add to that the cyclist who totalled the barrier at the Southern entrance to the bridge (see rubbish cycling thread).

Certainly felt windier on the approach to the bridge than it had on other days where a yellow warning was in place... And was very glad of the lift across.

I was there and I saw them.

Agree Clark Street is horrible in cross-winds.

50 MPH gusts at Swanston yesterday. Slightly higher elevation than KB but similar to blackford hill I think.

@tarmachan: the Blackford Hill weather station was closed several years ago.

Ah, I didn't know that. Shame. I recall a very high wind speed reading from there making the BBC news web site one year - IIRC that was the storm during which we were able to see the sitting room window bowing in when the really strong gusts hit. That was fun.

@MediumDave: Thanks, I'll look in to that list further, in particular how to get at the data.

I think I may be getting confused between the "Blackford Hill" weather station and the one on Kings Buildings. It's the data from the latter the seems to cease in 2017, at least as far as I can see from the uni's web page about it. So was Blackford Hill a different one again?

It does strike me as odd that Swanston should record a lower maximum wind speed than Gogarburn (though I note Swanston doesn't record it as the maximum gust speed, so maybe there's some smoothing of the data going on there?) I think the Torduff stations would also be comparable, sitting as they do on the 175m contour.

@ejstubbs Yes the Blackford Hill one was different from the King's Buildings one. Blackford Hill was attached to the comms tower up there, and only recorded wind (no other things like temperature etc). I think the agreement with whoever runs the comms tower lapsed and the Met Office decided it wasn't worth building another site/negotiating a new contract. A shame!
The King's Buildings one is on the roof of the JCMB and is/was run by the Meteorology dept, but there's been no data since July 2018. Presumably the person who volunteered to be responsible for it has given up/moved on.

you always know 12 to 24 hours in advance.

on yr.no, if the beaufort scale wind arrows are at two and a half bars or higher, then the bridge will be shut.

on xcweather, hover over edinburgh airport, you'll see the current windspeed, and in the forecast panel if its orange to red (26 to 45mph) then the bridge will be shut.

on ventusky, hover over the bridge location for wind gust speed. if its over 50mph (background colour will be red) then the bridge will be shut.

    @bax

I like to think that there exists a world where me being on the verge of tears means that the bridge will be shut.

Maybe I have to build that world. Is that it?

@iwrats - you probably just need this world here for that
