    Decade, really??

A video tweeted this morning by Labour Councillor Scott Arthur shows the first snow of the decade hitting Edinburgh.

It was nice and sunny, if a little windy, when I set off from town this morning. Upon reaching the towpath, there was a large bank of white cloud ahead so I pre-emptively attached the hood to my winter jacket. The towpath was fine, although puddles were a little slushy in places and hints of frost on the edges. Snow started falling as I was approaching the Slateford Aqueduct but stopped when I was passing through Wester Hailes. My feet were still dry by this point, but I regretted not putting my overshoes on because the puddles were so extensive and deep around the Bridge 8 Hub area that my shoes were covered with water despite the front mudguard on my hybrid. As I turned to the north at this point the sky ahead was black, and as I turned back to the west prior to the Scott Russell Aqueduct, it became apparent that the blackness extended to the west. I think I got away with only encountering the edge of this as the snow returned, heavier than before but quite manageable. I was then glad to arrive at Heriot-Watt before driving snow started falling although it is now clearer again.

Snow lying in the city centre now. Looks like it'll be turning to rain before long unfortunately.

@CycleAlex I wouldn't mind if it did that and washed the snow away in the next hour or so...

It would be nice if people driving would actually care for others. I've seen folk being drenched from cars going through standing water and have had near misses myself. It's difficult enough as a pedestrian in these conditions

I'm going to cautiously try to cycle and see how it goes. If I struggle while still on the campus I will retreat to lock my bike up inside for the night and catch a bus, else please send divers to the canal if I don't post by half 6 or so...

Snow has stopped. Annoyingly as took decision to stay in earlier rather than hit the town with Monsieur IWRATS. Rain later too.

Left work while it was still daylight and managed to make it home (albeit rather gingerly) in one piece.

Went for a walk this afternoon. Got soaked to skin by wet sleety snow. Observed that the ardour of the Canada geese on Inverleith Pond has not been diminished by the snow though.

(I think it was preliminary ardour, anyway - lots of honking and head dipping.)

At 5pm George square and MMW were slushy and freezing up.

Multiple losses of traction through Marchmont. Meadow place and Thirlestane particularly bad.

    Big puddles at junctions.

    Not nice at all.

Cycling home it was hard to see with the strong wind blowing snow straight at me.

Me and this missus took the bus in to Tollcross this afternoon to see David Copperfield at the Cameo. Emerged at 6pm to find no buses going up the hill to Bruntsfield (despite the Lothian Buses app saying that the 11 was diverted along Cluny Gardens, according to the same app's bus tracker map it actually appeared to be going past the Meadows and through Liberton; no idea where the X15 was going). The 27 and 16 were terminating at the Colinton Mains Tesco, with the 16 basically following the 27 route rather than going through Morningside. Wanting to get to Fairmilehead we opted for a 16 and duly hiked home in the semi-blizzard. Fortunately we had both anticipated the possibly of disruption and were dressed appropriately for the forecast weather.

Traffic was certainly glacial along Colinton Road and Colinton Mains Drive but the main reason seemed to be the SALT on Colinton Mains Road where it's being resurfaced. Once beyond the temporary traffic lights Oxgangs Road North was eerily quiet southbound, but obviously easily passable. Lothian Buses app nonetheless blamed weather conditions. I rather suspect it was at least equally if not more so due to the snafu caused by contemporaneous roadworks on the Western Approach Road, Gorgie Road, Chesser Avenue and Ardmillan Terrace displacing traffic on to other routes. Though I doubt that was the cause of the problems in Morningside. I did see a twitter report of a broken down bus near the Majestic on Comiston Road but since there are regularly parked vehicles along that stretch anyway I can't see that causing massive tailbacks unless it was somehow stuck in the right hand lane.

Basically, the depressingly usual state of affairs when bad weather that has been forecast for days turns up and takes everyone by surprise.

Bit odd of the buses to give up at the sight of a few snowflakes. There's no snow lying on roads on the southside. At the worst point there was about half an inch of slush.

I suspect they had 'a plan' for dealing with really bad snow and someone threw the switch prematurely.

When I went through holy corner at 5.15 or 5.30 there was a mega queue of busses from holy corner as far as I could see towards church hill. Traffic queued back in all directions as well.

So something was going on with busses down that way.

Pavements in Gilmerton were clearly very icy at some point overnight, but now mostly slush. Still some slidy bits though, so be careful.

I tried to cycle home from Livingston yesterday. I had to walk the first km or so, as the roads around my workplace were well covered in compressed wet snow. I dropped down my seat as gembo suggested here the other winter. I thought that I would walk the whole thing if I had to. Then I realised that it was a bit of a silly idea and ended up going for the train. The main-main roads had stretches that were just wet but then back to compressed wet snow. As I arrived to Livi North heavy snow arrived.

I opted for the car this morning. Regret it as A71 was fine if rather flooded. Livinston roads far better today for now.

Rather beautiful waterfall on Lady Road, as buses splash water onto pavement from semi-permanent flood at Gilmerton Road junction and then it floods back down again. Mini-Iguazu.

Did not enjoy my cycle from the office to the station yesterday evening - conditions as described by bill. I did contemplate leaving the bike at home today but then Edinburgh seemed ok and I thought it was unlikely that the Livingston roads would still be in a state this morning. I was right and the worst thing about the cycle from station to office this morning was the head wind.

Most of the forum weighed up their options last night I think from reports here and elsewhere. Most made the right choice.

I have only just discovered that the Twitter version of CCE, which is I think very similar? Has free drink when they meet up though the amount appears to measured in pennies behind the bar? So perhaps in keeping with 140 characters or whatever it is, thimbles of beer all round. Though does have the option of thrashing people at table tennis ( or indeed being thrashed)

Classic bait-and-switch from the weather goblins this morning. I slouched, waiting for the sun to come right up and saw blue skies and vertical trees.

OK I will get level 3 gloves on and ride my bicycle to work.

Still the snow was a useful tell-tale as it revealed the direction of the next gust on Leith Walk before I encountered it, allowing me to counter-steer and avoid the HGVs.

    @gembo welcome to Twitter, man.
