    Also, are spiked over shoes a thing? I may look into them (and maybe even winter tyres at last...) for next winter.

    less well suited to the linoleum floors of Lothian Buses.

    See also tiled floors of office atriums.

    @jdanielp yeah, yak trax are the business can even run in them if you're so inclined.

    Seeing that many West Lothian gritters (hello 'Salt Tyre', 'Han Snowlo', 'West Snowthian' etc) were still out when I was going to bed last night and they were still/already out when I got up, I decided to cycle to Livingston along A71 up to Kirknewton and then through the Calders. I was glad to be on the main roads as the pavements and side roads looked as people described above. Only a few patches of snow in the middle of the main Livi roads.

    We will see what the evening ride is going to be like.

    @steveo @Ed1 I was aware of Yak Trax (yet for some reason haven't ever got around to buying any despite hating icy conditions), but are they suitable for use when cycling?

    Tomorrow snow and easterly wind. Might extend my holiday.

    Tempted to go out now. Only one hail shower and some rain to come and wind dropping?

    The aerial map on the bbc is clear until tomorrow but bad after that for sure.

    I am my second pair of amazon fake trax. I find good at junctions for stopping and pushing off when ice. I just have normal pedals so find them fine to cycle with

    @Ed1 thanks for the info.

    I may yet make it home on the hybrid later today given the return of the sun...

    Edit: snowing again now.

    @jdanielp I have something like these:
    https://www.tiso.com/tiso-kaht-1127536/tiso-kaht-1127536-new-microspikes-black
    which I have used for running and on icy pavements. I'm not sure what they would be like to cycle in.

    You can also buy trainers that have spikes built in...

    Wee curving slope by the Dene at Stockbridge sheet ice, with a woman deliberately sliding down it, being pulled partly by a dog on a string and partly by gravity. WoL ungritted but not icy between Junction bridge and Warriston Tce. Rocjeid path sheet mud. Cobbles around the Dean Village a bit skatey. Paths around the Dean gallery all salted and gritted by a man who asked if I was not a bit cold in shorts.

    Loads of snow around Dalwhinnnie etc. But Beauly is a sunlit snow-free zone.

    @jdanielp: I have a pair of Petzl Spiky Plus for the boots that I wear around town when it's snowy and icy. Lower profile than Yak Trax or Microspikes, and although each foot only gets six small carbide steel pins I've found them very effective. One advantage is that the small spikes are a rather less aggressive than e.g. Microspikes if you find yourself having to walk across a dry (i.e. not icy or snowy) surface before being able to take them off. The lower overall profile might make them a bit easier to use on a bike - I don't know, I've never tried. They work out comparable in price to Yak Trax.

    @ejstubbs thanks for the tip. I will report back if I buy some.

    Anyone been on the towpath? I'm assuming that it should be fairly ok by now assuming no more snow rolls in before I'm leaving...

    Towpath was mostly fine, even quite dry in places. I now have no stranded bikes.

    how's the ice out there today, early birds?

    i'm leaving at 8 and would rather not bother with studs

    Seems just to be wet and cold this morning Bax San. This is because I tickled some studs on to my pub bike and inflated the tyres on my ancient hybrid. Both also received oil to the chain. Not sure about ice

    I saw a Scotsman article on facebook there by a Kevan Christie. Never come across him before, he is going for jaunty humour. He found the journey from fife to Scotsman quicker by parking at Ferrytoll and taking the bus. Despite this somewhat factual fact he still bangs on about using the FRB to drive over when the QC is shut.

    @gembo - that article. Mrs LB saw it too.
    Last week was ideal time to ditch the car but many didn't.

    Meanwhile the non-news is that the QC is open. FRB is restricted.

    @TheForthBridges

    ⚠️ Due to high winds gusting over 50mph, the Forth Road Bridge is currently closed to double deck buses, motorcycles, cyclists and pedestrians.

    ✅ The Queensferry Crossing remains open to all motorway traffic.
