@jdanielp interesting- that could have explained a 186km/h max speed...

@paddyirish, Even with an extra hour that would be an impressive feat.

@acsimpson oops, only just saw your comment. I did have my front light switched on a low steady setting for most of the ride and then flashing for the final section, but my cycle computer is a fairly old wired model... I don't remember ever seeing any odd results previously so I can only assume that it was related to the extreme rainfall.

  4. @twq I forgot to check my computer last night but it felt like a standard, light tailwind ride.

However, I do know that last week I was astonished to look down at the speedo and find myself doing 32mph on the path alongside the tramline to Balgreen without even realising. Very strong tailwind that day. Luckily there was no-one else around on the path at the time....

I'm about to change back to my old wired model for the winter as my main light causes a 30% drop in average speed if it's not on full power which is 90% of the time and my backup light has a similar effect even on full power.

    Not severe, but possibly extreme!

It's certainly toasty out there. I was embarrassingly dripping in PY

Roseburn, 7am: 2°C. Hawthornvale, 7:20am: 0°C. Stay safe out there, folks, it's definitely a touch on the cold side...

It was 2 degrees with ice on the cars when I left Eskbank this morning so I came in the direct way. Looks like a nice day though!

Not really severe more like 'back to normal'.

Though the first time I came to Scotland (on this very day in the calendar) it was much milder than I expected.

NEPN gritted on paths betwixt Warriston and St. Mark's Park, Chancelot Path and from 5ways as far as Roseburn.

Also signs of leaf sweeping around Ainslie Park judging by the enormous, neat pile of leaves pushed to one side in the undergrowth.

Saw lots of gritting activity this morning, even some pavement gritting on North Bridge.

However, I was out running on the Meadows well before 7, and there was not a suggestion of ice, even in the most ice prone spots.

Did anyone come upon any conditions in Edinburgh that would justify the costs of this morning's effort?

Frost on roofs and car windscreens out beyond Roseburn on the side streets, but not a crackle to hint of it on the paths, puddles, leafmulch. Of course, council will tell you that's because they gritted ;)

I guess they need to decide on the basis of the forecasts and the probability of frost / ice. If they wait until it's frosty / icy it's already too late.

And it's one of those damned if you do, damned if you don't situations.

Yes it is. Personally I am very impressed that they gritted cycle paths today. Good on them.

There were big dollops of ice on cars by my house in the morning. Frozen rain rather than frost.

Outbreaks of rain will spread east across Scotland during Thursday, becoming heavy and persistent across some central and western areas, before clearing from the west during Friday.

The public should be aware of the risk of localised flooding and potential disruption to transport.

  23. Didn't notice the grit on the Roseburn path this morning around 06:20. The only stretch of my route between the Shore and Ed Park this morning that was obviously (and heavily) gritted was the affluent Inverleith Row.

I was impressed recently though at the leaves having been swept from the Craigleith / Roseburn path. It's good that this was done before the freeze struck and the grit was put down.

Salt on roads all way from Balerno to royal mile this a.m. - ice all melted by it.

Hopefully still be salty tonight, although generally I take the low road past Herriot watt, never quite know why Google recommends going past Balerno as a way back to Dalmahoy from edinburgh, much more effort.

Definitely safer to grit than not. Last night it was an air frost so water lying didn't freeze but it would only have to drop another degree for it to be a ground frost.
Tonight the dew has frozen at 6pm so by midnight it will be a ground frost.

@threefromleith: the northbound side was being gritted at around 8:15 this morning, which was a bit late really
