Very wet there rescuing bay tree from flood. Drain blocks with leaves, water coming off the roof then pours in to bay tree

Our Gezebo has had a work out, allowing for ohysical distancing and keeping dryish. We established a rota for standing up and pushing water off the roof.

Had to charge the car battery in situ as couldn't bring myself to find the hidden retaining device in the tipping rain.

Slightly dodgy electrical practices I admit but seem to have got away with it.

We had a pleasant time watching last week's lightning storm from underneath a brolly on our decking. It was several miles away over Balerno but still visible as cloud to cloud forks..

I may not have much experience but this is the chilliest summer for me here. It's 8-10oC most mornings. This morning I decided to wear all my autumn layers minus longs.

@bill there was a truly dreich summer 5 or 6 years ago, Haar or low cloud over entire country except north west Scotland where they had wall to wall sunshine.

This summer positively balmy compared to that one.

Though agree, chilly in morning. I still have my arm warmers on and have only had one cycle maybe on Friday last where I started in short sleeves only.

Not finished, raining tomorrow but sunshine and showers to continue, British maritime climate innit.

Pretty sure the sky isn't meant to be this colour.

    Forked lightning reflection!

Last time I experienced a thunderstorm this energetic was in Oklahoma in 1992, although Toronto 2009 came pretty close.

I thought the street lights were on the blink last night with the continuous sheets (well think so was bit cloudy)

Think the Harperrig Reservoir Islands will be gone now.

Our rain gauge records 24mm of water fell from the sky last night. The lightning gauge suggests about a Faraday of electrons also fell/rose from/to the sky in this same period.

Big rainfall totals for Edinburgh with as much as 50mm falling in the city centre & 60mm towards Ingliston. Interestingly this shows how thunderstorm rainfall can vary wildly. At Hermiston just 2 miles from Ingliston there was about 25mm, in Gullane 3mm and Haddington just 2mm!

What started as a amazing light display for 3 hours, ended in us trying to save the house from flooding until 2:30am. Garage did flood partially, and the water was right up to the house as all of the drains failed, but it stayed dry.

Kirkcaldy prom was flooded, as.was the hospital car park, pictures of cars bobbing up and down in the water.

Also a landslide between Burntisland and Kinghorn, with reports of caravans being hit by it.

Also path at waterfall between Burntisland and Aberdour has been washed away, so no path access to Aberdour.

School also closed this morning due to flooding in area. One +ve from Covid is that they are set up now to teach remotely, so no day off for the boy. Though the poor thing is all dressed up with nowhere to go.

Apparently the A68 is closed near Fala due to the road collapsing.

Yesterday I manged to badly time my cycle ride and got properly sodden on the return from Gladhouse. On Dalhousie road, the water pressure below the newly laid widened cycle/ped path was strong enough to lift the edge of the tarmac and then spout upwards into the river on the main road.

Crikey! That's not good. (The canal far more than the road.)

Cripes - couldn't that drain the canal?

Apparently yes! This a section where there is a reasonable distance between locks I think.

2.5cm of rain is around 2 weeks of rainfall in Edinburgh in one go.

    That's awful.

BBC news not mentioning either of these atm.

Lanes around the A68 closure will be pretty busy - one to avoid for probably many weeks.

Yes, The union canal is flat from Edinburgh to Falkirk so until they plug this section or stop the inflows all the water is going to be heading straight for that gap. I seem to remember something like this happening before and them getting builders bag sized sand bags either side of the breach.

It's affecting the railway line too so I can't imagine it will take them long to stop the leak. However I don't expect the towpath will be open again this year.
