Temperature on bbc weather stated as well above zero all night. Little snow symbol posted for Sunday.

Yeah, but it also said it was going to be a low of 3°C this morning, and it hit -1°C. A couple of weeks ago, it forecast a low of 8°C one morning, and it hit 0°C. Therefore, I don't trust the BBC weather; I trust the fact there is ice on the ground outside my house.

Nern from roseburn was ok a little shinny looking but not slippy just arrived in leith 20 minutes ago only passed 3 people and 2 bikes. Heriot watt looked the most shinny.

Although my commute wasn't slippy, looking at the non-gritted state of most of it convinced me that a few degrees lower will probably see it icing up. This is the path from Porty to Seafield and thence along the railway path to Leith Links.

The rather well-matured leaf jam adorning the railway path would be interesting come the first drop in mercury.
With this in mind, I've just invested in a pair of Schwalbe Winter Performance studlies from Planet X.

Thin layer of frost on pavement outside my house when I was taking the milk in this morning. Main road clear. Paths may therefore be slippy?

Its a blip. It will be back above 10 degrees before Xmas.
Plus I can't be bothered putting the Marathon Winters on.

    (Cue 12 inches of snow)

    :-) :-) :-) :-)

Very frosty around Dalkeith and slippy in places on paths. I'm on the bus to go to a meeting but the roads look okay with care.

Yes, Broomhouse Path was pretty slippy at around 7am. I still have my 23s on though.

Roads not much better. Little frost left on them admittedly, but several idiots trying to make up time by pulling dangerous overtaking moves, just because they've lost time scraping their cars this morning.

The KB weather station is showing odd temperature readings: 5 degrees and similar all night

Paths were OK, with care or knobbly tyres. Back wheel almost went once on Barnton Avenue but that was all. No sudden moves.

Towpath frosty around Meggetland and Craiglockhart. Clearer towards Wester Hailes (where the air was noticeably warmer) and then frosty again towards the bypass.

Diciest bit of my trip was coming down Gogar Station Road at the end of the straight bit of new road where it bends sharp left to the bridge over the Gogar Burn. There was no evidence of gritting, and the inside of the corner was a sheet of polished ice. I felt both front and rear of the bike lose grip, but luckily it stayed upright.

Ice tyres go on tonight, I think...

Until the ice tyres are on for me , like Instography, no sudden moves. Also ride unclipped and hands off the brakes...

Leith Links a bit icy, though not so much on the main east path. Hawthornvale, Pilton and Drylaw sections of NEPN frosty. Air noticeably warmer through Craigleith. No grit anywhere.

So who wants to show off their ability to fit 20" marathon winters and be rewarded ith their choice of preserves?

Similar observations to Greenroofer, but due to the frost and ice being really obvious today, I actually didn't feel any more at risk than yesterday. Again, I just took it easy over the frostier sections and was able to avoid the occasional areas of ice completely. Still no sign of any ice on the canal itself though.

Heriot-Watt campus was well-gritted throughout, but this actually made me feel a little uneasier, if anything...

Definitely colder than yesterday. Heavy frost near us and ice on the car. Paths in Dalgety Bay were frosty but OK for walking eldest to club. Took the bike on the roads beyond that however and that was OK to Inverkeithing.

Train to South Gyle and then main roads around there. paths didn't appear to be gritted.

A few degrees warmer this afternoon and expecting to ride home.

Winter tyres to be fitted ASAP.

I lost the back end a little bit on NEPN today, where the path kinks at the south end of the red bridge wasteland (whatever it's called). I think I'll be putting the studs on at the weekend.

Curiously the air temp wasn't that cold in Currie. I have a temperature sensor and it was 5C when I left (now 6.5C at 10:15). Maybe an island effect, although it was colder yesterday according to the sensor and felt warmer... there was no frost until I'd dropped down to Westfield and the canal.

Pretty frost off the main roads by the time I reached Corstorphine. Featherhall a little bit slidy, any pooled water had frozen to ice and lots of frost around and a smidge of black ice.

It was cold up our way, with ice on the car at 19h00 yesterday. On the canal the birches were dreamlike on account of that frosting.

Plenty of frost and small patches of ice on streets around Musselburgh this am on the way to school. Child reckoned the frost was amazing. Mandopicker didn't. Child couldn't comprehend why. Lengthy conversation about ice and frost ensued...

Main roads to Portobello all well gritted (memo to self - wash bike...) but Porty Prom wasn't. Heavy frost and some icy patches all the way along. Dodging the death-wish spaniels (and their owners) held a certain 'je ne sais quoi'. Avoided the well-polished tyre tracks and stuck to the crisper stuff.

Seafield to Leith Links unsurprisingly ungritted. Although not gritted, the main E-W path across Leith Links was bone dry, but then it's in the lee of a fence/wall.

All in all, it was fine but I felt slightly more apprehensive. Perhaps its age. Perhaps it's because I've just spent a small fortune on my bike recently. In any case, I'll be pleased when I can try out the studded tyres.

Corstorphine to leith at 7:45am, glad I had the front wheel fitted with spikes. Back wheel never slipped but would have had zero confidence on slick 25s...

Describes my own ride perfectly. It seems a thin layer of frost had started to melt on Barnton Avenue West, making it (a) invisible, and (b) extra slippy. The white hard frost seems to provide reasonable grip, if you keep everything serene and balanced.

Pinkhill path and Roseburn Park both a bit slippy this morning, although that was on slick 23mms.

I did the same at unchtime and these will be fitted to the MTB for the winter.

Widespread icy patches are expected to develop during Friday morning. The public should be aware of the risk of ice on untreated surfaces following overnight rain.

Ouch Doug5_10. Hope you put ice on that and kept your compression / winter shorts on to aid recovery. I have slid off in the past and had bad bruising for weeks after.

I have fitted my aging studded 700/42s to my cx bike and found the 'planted' feeling much more reasuring than my 28 scwalbe Marathons.

Felt a bit dodgy on my road bike Schwalbe Blizzard 700/22's this morning, though not really any slippage, but I was careful/apprehensive. I may retire the Allez for the winter and stick to the Dr Dew with 32's if this weather persists.
