I had a really enlivening cycle this morning, up to Humbie. Really medicinal after a week with too many meetings. Mind it was winter extra weight that kept me on the bike, given the wind at times

    No bike for me today.

Listening to BBC Radio 3 this morning while driving in sleet and after gritting our cul-de-sac to get out in the first place: Edinburgh 7 degrees. I felt cheated.

What is up with the wind so far this month? I don't think there's been a day with wind speeds <20mph yet!

Food recycling bin carnage round here this morning: emptied bins dumped by the bin men on the snow/slush covered pavements and getting blown around all over the place. Must have retrieved at least ten while I was out walking the dog (not our dog, we're looking after it for a friend while they're on holiday). Which brings me on to another point: most of the bins had house numbers on them, but a good half of the houses didn't, and I had to interpolate between neighbours who had gone to the extreme effort required to display a street number on their property. (I'd always understood that it was a legal requirement to display the street number.)

@bill as you have probably discovered there was snow in Livingston. The cycle from the station was enough for me!

    @mcaairney - It's March weather in Jan/Feb.

Rosie you might be onto something- the crocuses are already out in my garden and the daffodils are already starting to sprout. Even by March standards it's unusually windy though...

No wind on my ride this morning. I classify it as unusual weather.

You'll regard it as back to normal later this week, then: Met Office has a yellow warning of wind from 18:00 Wednesday to 18:00 Thursday. Forecasting 60mph gusts overnight. Enjoy.

The Forth was like a millpond when we crossed on Friday morning, mind.

Now an amber warning from 18:00 Wednesday to 09:00 Thursday. Storm Dudley is the culprit.

It's impossible to think of that storm without a brummie accent.

    Oh

    And there’s another one

    Storm Eunice (probably, mostly England)

The strong westerly winds were expected to hit south-west Scotland and northern parts of Northern Ireland before extending across southern Scotland and northern England. Forecasters were uncertain about the timing and location of the strongest gusts but inland speeds of 60-70mph were likely and “perhaps briefly up to 80mph in a few places”. Exposed coasts and hills could be battered by gusts up to 90mph.

All of Wales and much of England are expected to be battered by high winds, up to 80mph in places. Northern England, Northern Ireland and southern Scotland can also expect high winds, compounded by the possibility of heavy snow and blizzards.

The Met Office issued “stay indoors” advice ahead of the storm.

We: Can we work from home tomorrow?
Answer: It's only a yellow warning.

WFH was minimal at my workplace and now long gone.

I have requisitioned teenager's mountain bike to get to the picket line tomorrow.

(we haven't ever put studded tyres on any of our bikes this year, for obvious rasons)

It's "only" yellow for snow round here, too. The worst winds will be further south. The red warning is for Cornwall and Devon.

The little snow we had in Morningside is already melting. Roads all look rideable at the moment.

I thought the council had fixed the standing water issue on the NEPN (Sainsburys to Leith) a few years ago? Also the gritter has chewed up the sides of the path. On days like todays, it's a bit of mess.

It was the nicest weather I have had for a morning walk in some days. I wish I'd enough time for a bike ride, though the roads are probably salty. Moorfoots, Camp Wood and Pentlands have a good coating. Apparently A68 at Soutra was problematic. It feels not that cold at 3.5 degrees.

Stay at home or (maybe) leave your property

Fortunately unlikely to be as bad round here as Wednesday.

    Just added snow.

Environment Agency warns of 'very, very serious' situation

People may have to leave their homes due to the danger posed by Storm Eunice, an Environment Agency spokesman has said.

Roy Stokes, the Environment Agency spokesperson for the Midlands, described the weather event as a “really, really serious situation” and urged people to listen to local advice about whether to leave their properties.
