"Severe weather warning"

@acsimpson: More likely the EEN editorial office hasn't been able to afford a new wall calendar since 2021.

This beast has been forecast for the last three weeks but has yet to materialize

It's related to a Sudden Stratocaster Warming event which is, apparently, currently in progress:

    https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/feb/17/weather-tracker-world-braces-for-sudden-stratospheric-warming-event

Note, however, that less sensationalist reporting carries a good many caveats:

The consequences of this warming will spread slowly into the troposphere and can, over time, disrupt the jet stream that influences our weather on the surface. A weakened jet stream can help in the development of large “blocking” areas of high pressure. Should high pressure build across Scandinavia, it can feed very cold polar air from the east into western Europe and towards the UK. However, it is important to note that not all SSW events are the same, and not all will lead to cold conditions in Europe. The eventual effects of such SSW events are not usually experienced until two to three weeks after they begin.

    “could”

The Capital could see a second Beast from the East, with wintry conditions similar to 2018’s adverse weather event forecast for the city. The Met Office has warned that a major Sudden Stratospheric Warning (SSW) event, which is currently occurring over the Artic, could bring snow and cold to Scotland in March.

Met Office says start of spring will be colder than usual, with wintry showers expected in north and east

Mark Sidaway, a deputy chief meteorologist with the Met Office, said ... a sudden stratospheric warming – an atmospheric phenomenon above the north pole – had been seen. This can cause westerly winds around the pole that normally hem in the intensely cold winds to start moving to the east. In 2018, this brought intensely cold Arctic Siberian air to the UK.

He added: “Although we have had a sudden stratospheric warming event and other drivers pointing towards colder conditions in March, at this stage there is a low probability of having widely disruptive winter weather like that of five years ago in March 2018.

EN seems to be looking at alternative forecasts -

Or just going ‘somewhere in Scotland’ = Edinburgh!

Weather forecasts seem to have been getting less reliable in recent years.

Current ’Beast from the east 2’ seems to be no snow (in Ed), more ‘not much wind’, might be quite wet on Sat and ‘proper nighttime frost’.

For the latter, and consequent cycling conditions, worth having this app which show’s current temperatures at lots of personal weather stations -

I wore full waterproofs this morning based on the forecast of heavy rain from around 9 am and the menacing clouds to the west as I set off. Obviously it stayed completed dry on my commute.

Don’t know whether the ability to significantly change the forecast every few hours is reassuring…

Come Friday morning, heavy snow is expected in the Capital, though at this stage it isn’t expected to last into the weekend.

@SRD I'm pretty sure that was there this morning, if not last night. There was certainly a lot of grit going down around the area yesterday throughout the evening.

There will also be some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths and some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces.

Cycling to work wasn't too bad earlier. I'm hoping I can pick a suitable window in which it won't be too bad cycling home later.

@gembo it didn't work out that way for me, although heading home wasn't as windy as I had feared it might be, but I got very wet.

@jdanielp, if it is any consolation I then had to climb up on the garage roof to unblock the drain and remove the huge pond that was dripping into the garage. At that point there was some sleet and my, right hand was frozen.
