@SRD - thanks, yes the Ardle in village is wild but seen that many times before. Power was off from 3 to 11 on Wednesday. Off and on yesterday in some gusts. FM radio is handy although Heartland had no mention of A9 closure on bulletin we heard. Tay FM better for news.

Tree down blocking canal path between Harrison Rd Bridge and the path through HP East - which suggests you could divert through the park (would be muddy).

This endless rain - already threatening crops. The potato farmers in Ireland have been unable to plant the potatoes, and a shortage has been predicted. I'm assuming it will affect other crops as well. Once this would have meant famine and riots.

My shoes were still wet this morning after last night's soaking. Now I'm in the office I have my spare pair on.

The rain today certainly felt 20% wetter than it used to feel!

Apparently the bypass was flooded yesterday near Dreghorn.

Yes, there were six flood closures between Dreghorn and Lothianburn, plus a RTC on the westbound offslip at Lothianburn. People were stuck for over three hours because of the queue.

It certainly was wet. My shoes are still drying.

Still, I had the sublime joy of gliding home with my shopping, pasing a continuous line of stopped vehicles between Colinton Raod, through Polwarth, Harrison Park and Ardmillan. Delightful.

(Mix of flood diversions and idiocy caused the jam - at one point I had to dismount to walk around a Big Dumb Pickup Truck that had wedged itself so completely between traffic and parked cars that there was no moving it, forwards or back, and no possibility of filtering past it either).

Apparently the bypass was flooded yesterday near Dreghorn.

And on top of that the Braid Burn burst its banks, flooding Colinton Mains Drive, and a drain burst at the junction of Oxgangs Road North and Oxgangs Avenue:

So a lot of the drivers who'd bailed off the bypass got stuck in tailbacks from those incidents on Oxgangs Road. Lots of dark red lines on Google Maps' traffic layer yesterday evening:

As a result of all that, the rat-runners headed down the side streets (i.e. normally reasonably quiet residential roads, like ours) and got stuck in queues there instead. View from our front bedroom window yesterday evening:

(The silver hatchback belongs to my neighbour. He has a perfectly good two-car driveway but for some reason prefers to leave that car abandoned on the roadside. At least he has stopped dumping his souped-up Range Rover there with two wheels on the kerb, as was his habit before the pavement parking ban came in. The Bentley coupe - that he hardly ever used and always had to jump start when he did because it had been sat on his drive going nowhere for so long - is no longer sat there, presumably relocated to somewhere more secure, since a gang of balaclava-ed ne'er-do-wells attempted to remove it under the cover of darkness a few months back.)

Anyone know if Riversdale Crescent is passable by bike (lots of them, aka Critical Mass?)

It is showing as a no-entry symbol on Google maps

Used to be, maybe road works or storm defenses?

Should be able divert along that way and have a look at some point this week, I can see that it is on the Road Closure list for Taylor Swift concerts at Murrayfield.

Riversdale Crescent is 100% open, no sign of any closures on it.

The River Esk path is flooded just by Cowpits Road, at the point the path goes under the A1. I don't know where all the water came from, I don't think the river would get up there that easily. The river has also been over the path in other places and left quite a lot of mud.

Crikey. The Lomond Hills have just received half an inch of rain in 10 minutes. #Fife

Not sure I've ever seen so much water running down the street as there was on Minto Street at 4pm today. It made the cycle lanes unusable in places.

I popped down to Blackford Pond the other day to see how the swans are getting on with all the recent rain. The pen* was sitting on the nest, but with only about four inches of freeboard. I have a suspicion that the eggs in the nest might actually have been sitting in water, which would likely not be a good thing :(

The welly-wearing lady looking at the nest pointed out as I passed by that the path was flooded further along. I thanked her for her warning but carried on confidently anyway, passing the cob on the way, who was floating about next to the low railing that runs alongside the path.

My confidence rapidly drained away as the flood deepened the further I went, until I gave up when my feet were disappearing under water on each downward pedal stroke. Turning around, I found Mr Swan now facing me with his wings half-raised in the swan "I'm not particularly happy about what you're up to" pose. Fortunately he seemed satisfied that I was beating a sodden retreat.

As I cycled damply back past the lady in wellies I was tempted to remark "that's funny, the water only came up to here on the swan" but I wasn't sure whether she'd get the reference.

I am concerned that another bout of heavy rain could make things really difficult for those swans.

    * I have chosen to name her "Marine La Pen", and her partner "Bob the Blackford Cob".

Some good news there - there are three eggs hatched as of this afternoon, looks like maybe another two eggs to go.

The drainage at the pond is constantly getting clogged. Natural Heritage Officers will come and use drain poles on it but it doesn't last long, I suspect there's a bigger issue with the drainage that needs investigated. I moved to just beside Blackford Pond 10 years ago and it's only in the last couple of years we've started to see frequent significant flooding that makes it impassable. Several times this year already.

Oh, that is good news. Made my evening. I'll maybe pop down again tomorrow to say hi to the proud mum and dad.

Scotland is set to be hit by snow and black ice as an Arctic blast hits the country from as early as Sunday, with the first official yellow weather warning issued for autumn.

The Met Office has announced the alert, with two separate warnings issued covering various parts of the country, including Edinburgh and Glasgow from Monday.
