A warning for wind on Monday is in place for parts of Durham, Northumberland, Cumbria and North Yorkshire. More of the north-east and Cumbria is expected to be affected on Tuesday, as well as southern parts of Scotland, including Glasgow and Edinburgh, and most of Northern Ireland.

Hogmanay celebrations are at risk, with warnings for rain and snow in place across most of Scotland on Monday and Tuesday.

The warning is in addition to a yellow weather warning for snow and ice that covers the Highlands and Grampian regions until 10am Thursday.

By Wednesday evening, 40 flood warnings – meaning flooding is expected – were in place in England, 11 in Scotland and four in Wales.

Snow is general all over Balerno. To paraphrase James Joyce in his most bodacious short story THe Dead, set at a party in Dublin on 6th Jan When it is also snowing. A great story turned into a great movie by John Huston. The main Male character Gabriel Conroy goes on cycling holidays to France and Belgium.

Wasn't cycling today, but roads looked OK? Will be cycling before 9am tomorrow. Weather looks the same as today but maybe marginally colder?

Will I be OK on main roads? I do have the option of fitting spiked tyres to another bike but would rather not bother if I can get away with it.

Main roads probably ok. Side streets and paths Nope.

Main roads were all gritted today, as were cycle paths through the Meadows. Side roads in town were fine, wouldn't be so sure about those in higher outlying areas though.

Side roads in Gilmerton are mostly fine. Some of the monoblocked ones in the newer developments still had some icy patches this afternoon.

Once you get higher than the Colinton tunnel the WoL path is a frozen rutted nightmare. Similarly the side streets in Currie are nearly impassable with hard frozen rutted ice, but the main road is completely clear

Has been a weird localised snowfall. Livingston and Balerno - Currie. The old folks ae raging as no wee tractors and no gritting. People in Port have been amazed at out substantial snowman

Ice still solid twixt Gembo Towers and BotMid. Inexplicable lack of grit/ploughs given nae ice/snow beyond Currie.

Certainly beyond the lovely old wooden sign that stood at the West End of Juni Green and said Welcome to Edinburgh

Went to play in the Balerno snow today.

Very crispy. Tried the Red Road but could only make progress if I stayed on the narrow path trodden down by walkers, but it was a bit narrow and as soon as the front wheel fell off the compacted snow, I couldnt keep upright.

Got part way up before admitting defeat. Coming down in the virgin snow was a lot of fun though...

Have commuted out to Livingston this morning.
    1) It is <rule 2> freezing
    2) There is snow here. Even the main roads have snow down the middle in places. Cycle paths unusable unless you can cycle on compacted frozen snow...

@ fimm Yes Livi and Balerno is where the snow is at

Easy to cycle on Compacted Frozen Snow. Braking trickier. Straight to A and E at St Johns [i was there between xmas and new year, well technically just the out of hours GP, Steroids worked wonders. Only one guy in handcuffs, and vest and shorts, he was cheery on my way iin but 20 mins later after superb care for me on my way out his drugsof choice had worn off. Head in hands realising it was Cells not Bells for Ne’erday]

Reckon that was the coldest commute of the winter (so far). Could hardly move my hands by the time I made it into work - genuinely painful warming them up.

    Wrap up warm folks.

WoL Path is like the Cresta Run Bobsleigh

Been commuting home from Grangemouth to Duddingston this week on the MTB. Roads have been clear and generally snow/ice free apart a few patches of ice on minor roads. Cramond Brig and Bruntsfield golf course path had some frost.

Only thing is that cycling distance on the MTB feels a lot slower an inefficient compared to the usual commuting road bike.

I enjoyed a couple of weeks of my new commute on GP5000s before this cold snap brought out the marathon winters. The difference is really extreme (although I'm sure part of that is the violence of the frozen rutted surface)

The Vittoria Cora’s is about half the price of a GP5000. In the rolling resistance comparison [the bit not behind the pay wall anyway] it was a bit heavier a bit more resistance and a bit more prone tot he P word. But there was not much in it. However in their conclusion they really do go for the GP5000 so it is the tyre for those in funds.

I'm not sure at the time that you could get 32mm in many other nice fast tyres.

I tried Compass ones a few years ago. Huge mistake, destroyed by endless punctures

Is 32 the new 25 or just revised 28??
