I have a sneaky suspicion I can guess the answer but what's gritting like in West Lothian especially the area around Broxburn & Livvy and the A89/A8 path back into Edinburgh? *Finally* found a proper house that accepted my offer but with my budget it's well outside the city in Broxburn proper so in future years I'll have a new council to be grumbling about.

    “*Finally* found a proper house“

    That’s always an exciting moment

    Re gritting

    Well you know/depends

Only an issue a few days a year

    You’ve got Uphall Station near/ish

And lots of route options to explore

    Enjoy

@chdot Thanks! It's going to be an adventure as the place needs a complete overhaul, but compared to what I could have bought in Edinburgh it'll be palatial. Aye the train is there, but the miser in me resents paying for that when I could ride to Ingliston and take the tram in for two bob hah.

Exploring the area should be fun but I think I'm going to have to force myself to get over my heebie jeebies at country roads.

Broxie has good back roads north and south. Birdswell? Is a favourite that leads to the entry to Almondell and the road that passes former Glenmorangie site leads to Niddry castle and good access to the canal. Obvs the canal is also in downtown Broxie but on a 270 degree meander. Good bike shop in Broxie too.

@gembo Oh aye, can you tell me where that is? The only thing I found on google maps was a woman who used to do repair work out of her home but had to mostly retire in the last couple of years due to issues with her hands. I thought I was going to have to shlep into Livvy for any repairs.

Well I thought it was called Herbies but that is now in Pumphy Pedal to the Metal listed as just off East Main St Broxburn [Argyll Court]

    If still there

Also Birdsmill is the name of the road. Not Birdswell.

Huh, yeah I found it next to the Boots, it's on streetview but with no details and the icon doesn't show up on the main map or pop on searching for bike shops. Pedal To The Metal does though at a closed premises in Winchburgh with some slightly hair raising reviews.

I think I'll just have to bite the bullet and learn how to do basic stuff myself hah.

Oh I meant to ask, have you any experience with the B8020 up to Winchburgh? There's a sawmill up that way that looks like it might sell actual proper wood not just construction-grade crapola, but the road looks a little hairy at points and has national speed limit sections which I usually like to avoid.

My pal lives up that way. He doesnt use the local shops though, dining his own fettling, [market seems volatile)

The road on a sunday morning is quiet. The cars are driven fast true. Beyond the timber place round the bing and before you turn left to head down to Winchburgh, that is where the pink nose cone of the jumbo jet lives. Once you start descending look our for the left turn to Fauchledean Rd. This a. Avoids Winchburgh and b. Is a great quiet road for cycling onwards to The Look OUt at Beecraigs

I commute to Livingston by bike-train-bike but ice is the one thing that puts me off cycling. The main roads in Livi normally seem to be OK - though they had left the snow in the middle of the road between the station and my office when I was there on Thursday, which wasn't ideal. Probably budget cuts as ever.
I do think they treat some more heavily used cycle paths, but none of the ones I use, so if it is icy I use the road.

They did clear leaves off part of a cycle path when I complained, and the following year, when I expected to have to complain again, they cleared the whole section and not just the part they'd done before I complained.

I'm planning on cycling to work for the first time this year tomorrow and would appreciate confirmation that any compacted snow and ice on the canal towpath that might have survived the initial thaw is on the way out or has hopefully gone already...

I’m nowhere near the canal however we live in one of Edinburgh’s highest areas (Fairmilehead - above a sort of suburban snow line so we often get or keep snow and ice much longer than town) and it’s all disappeared today (around 9 degree temps), so I would expect you’ll be fine!

I came along the towpath tonight. No Ice. Only one bit on the WoL path just north of Blinkbonny.

I did find wind though I and pushed over they aqueduct. The same wind This a.m. blew me to Loanhead via Old Pentland

Thank you for the reassurances. The towpath was fine if a little greasy in places, although there was a fair amount of ice still lingering in the canal itself. I noticed the wind but rode over the aqueduct anyway since it was fairly quiet well after 9am...

A senior forecaster has urged people to keep up to date with weather warnings as Storm Eowyn approaches Scotland. BBC weather bulletin presenter Judith Ralston said she had “never seen anything” like the data coming in from the Atlantic as the storm approaches.

Storm Eowyn is predicted to bring 90mph winds to parts of Scotland from Friday, risking a “danger to life” from flying debris and sea surges on the coast.

Mrs Stubbs has just rescheduled her hair appointment from tomorrow afternoon to Tuesday next week.

As she says, there's no point getting your hair done if it's going to be messed up as soon as you step out the door to come home...

Sweary Jim tidied up what hair is left on my dome on Monday so that's one thing I don't have to worry about.

We have been wandering around the garden trying to make sure that anything that could potentially move is secure. However one garden ornament that we tried to move was stuck down harder than we'd expected so we have had to leave it and hope that if we can't move it, the wind won't either!
