"you must be very brave" yada yada - people say this when it's raining and slightly uncomfortable but when it's actually dangerous (like icy) nobody really cares because "falling off your bike" == slapstick.

I can see blue sky over murrayfield... It's all a sham.

Two pairs of socks? McBaff sheepskin slippers for me. And I just put the fire on.

I'm working at home while supervising two construction professionals. They are working hard carting stuff out of the house. They have the front door open. They are warm because they are working hard. I am a soft-handed professional sitting in front of my computer, and I am freezing.

The Met Office has issued amber warnings – alerting residents to “be prepared” – as 80mph gusts rip through the Lothians over the next 48 hours before snowfall on Friday.

It is thought around 15cm of snow will drop by the end of the week.

Council workers were forced to remove a
30-metre chunk of rock wall and fencing from the Edinburgh Academicals’ playing grounds at Raeburn Place after a heavy frost brought it crashing down into the car park.

Even for the EEN that is poor reporting. The amber warnings only apply to the far north and west of Scotland. Edinburgh and the Lothians are covered by yellow (be aware) warnings for wind today and tomorrow and snow on Friday.

Sorry I jumped to a false conclusion yesterday. The snow studs weren't part of the 4 for 3 offer.

However they are available again today as the deal of the day.

  9. What happened to the base layers they had on earlier?

I was going to order a couple of those but can't see them any more :(

Hmm. From what I could see and feel when I was outside today, I think the bike could definitely have been an option today after all. Looks quite breezy and cold again tomorrow, but think I'll give it a go on the spikes.

    Bikes were OK heading east

I was heading to Drylaw from BAlerno and it became light due to the effect of dawn. However it then became dark again due to the effect of very dark clouds and very heavy rain. Wet kit did not too bad, though fortunately I had spare cagoule in bag as first one did not dry before it was time for me to head from drylaw to town along the NEPN.

certainly feel that things were not as bad today as the weather folks predicted. Yes there was a pretty bad hail storm at one point, and I think even a thunderbolt. But frankly it was generally OK.
Folks in Shetland would be laughing at us and wondering what all the fuss was about.
It is bad when the EEN gives out that we are in for a serious weather event because that downplays the difficulties of the properly serious weather events experienced by the more remote places in Scotland.

I heard the thunder today as well. If it carries on like this we might even experience that rare meteorological phenomenon of 'thundersnow'.

In Newfoundland for some reason, we rarely have thunder in the summer, but it is not uncommon during winter storms.

Media are in hysterical meltdown over a wee bit of winter weather. Cycle home took a few minutes longer that usual because of head wind.

Actual weather forecasts are a much better guide to action than febrile news reports. 'Weather bomb' my arse.

@amir: just as long as you are able to make it to the Old Bridge Inn. Or even better, get snowed in there! :-)

    :)

We're currently "stuck" at the Hilton, which is very good value mid-week, plus we can walk straight into the wilderness and then back into the sauna.

So what are the odds on whether it'll be icy tomorrow then. Currently I'm thinking the MTB with spikes is in order, but maybe it'll not ice over and the slick 25s on the commuter might be ok?

I left the bike after seeing reports of heavy rain/snow this morning, but it was fine, if blustery, when I left home. Made me angrier to be on the bus!

There was so much snow on the BBC app's morning hour-slots that the background had gone swirly snow-grey earlier. Not much happening snow-wise on the ground yet.

Dusting of snow across the road from Roslin to Straiton, but once I was inside the bypass it was confined to sheltered bits that you don't have to ride on.

One person, evidently on an MTB by tyre width, merrily cruised down the bike lane by IKEA et al, but I went for the black stuff on the regular lane.

Not forgetting that you can check traffic cameras from all over scotland (though none(?) inside bypass) -

All fine out west. Enthusiastic bursts of hail, but nothing traction-threatening.

It was lying a little in Currie this morning so I wrestled on the studs (new tyre for the front was a bit of a battle).

However by the time I'd dropped down to the canal, there was nothing except wet snow in the air. Rode all the way along and saw barely a soul, except another chap cycling over the viaduct with me, then down NEPN to the office. All just wet.

Rice crispy riding FTW though. I'll soon be in fine shape at this rate!

Leaming ton walk and south meadow walk were verging on slushy when I rode them - probably around 9ish? But snow now lying in central edinburgh, so would think they might well be properly slushy by now.

Luckily cycle service made quick work of installing my marathon winter, so I'm all set for the ride home.
