    Hmm indeed.
Picture has "find out more at elgt.org.uk" but no obvious info on there yet.

On the POP feeder ride I was chatting to the chap who does the Innertube map and he said that he'd put in an application for funds to improve the Fiveways environment. It must be ELGT that he is involved with.

I think that he said the proposal was to put in benches, plants, etc and a low wall encircling the area. It was to make the area more pleasant and park-like rather than anything cycling specific.

Perhaps this deserves a new thread?

"Perhaps this deserves a new thread?"

Probably. I thought I'd stuck it on spotted, so then thought I'd been spamtrapped when I couldn't see it.

There are some stones underneath a tarpaulin between the Trinity/Newhaven arms, which might be connected. Wonder if the edging between Chancelot/Warriston will end up slightly better-defined than it is at the moment, with some mud being dragged off the verge onto the path? Wonder if there'll still be space for the Bike Station to park their van?

Making it park-like will only increase conflict?? Its a junction on the main active travel transport network,...and they want to make it into a park??? Total nonsense. And the next thing will be chicanes etc to slow cyclists down as they go through the new 'park' to manage speed and reduce the conflict they are about to spend money creating.

Actually, NEPN could do with a few chicanes as these are sorely lacking at present. If they were every 100m or so it would make things much more exciting for the school kids mixing it up with rush hour traffic. Would also encourage people to use proper forms of transport like the tram or their car as the advantages of the path for active travel are eroded away.

BOOKMAKERS have slashed the odds of a White Christmas in Edinburgh this year.

The chances of the white stuff falling in Edinburgh is now said to be 2/1 according to Ladbrokes, down from 3-1 last week.

Damp and cool but bright this morning, with some surprise ice right at the very end of Gylemuir / Gogarloch housing estate, but otherwise free from frozen water.

Some frost and ice on Porty prom this morning, patches of frost and well-chilled leaf jam along the cycle path from Seafield. No evidence of grit. Studlies happily crunching away. Path along Leith Links not only frost-free but almost bone dry.

A few patches of frost on the Water of Leith path but it was getting sun and a fair bit of footfall.

The slalom up to the shared use bridge over Harry Lauder Rd (now with added bike trap at Hope Lane) was still very tricky this morning. Don't think this has seen any gritting EVER.

Fairly frosty in patches from the bridge to the Blackhall junction. Moaned at the Council using the twitter who said it would be "investigated".

"80% of Copenhageners cycle all winter"

But do they have spiked tyres or practiced skills?

Or a different type of snow?

I think one answer is that they can be pretty sure that main (cycle) routes will have mini-snowploughs patrolling and will also have been gritted - so low chance of ice.

They're upright and have rear coaster brakes and are possibly more used to sensible slow-down-in-advance rear-wheel braking?

From looking at the pretty pictures, most didn't seem to have studded tyres. Possibly having many more bikes rolling over the snow keeps it broken up enough to avoid ice?

Also, as wingpig says, they haven't got to permanently sprint to stay safe in traffic.

I think it was from Copenhagen that I got the tip about putting a lot of plastic zip ties around your tyres/wheels to increase traction in the snow (*) so presumably the cycle paths there do occasionally get covered with it, even with Copenhagen council's reportedly fabulous snow clearance policies (cycle paths _first_, and clearance starts as soon as it starts snowing, apparently).

(*) if your bike has hub brakes

Only motorists need to be aware, though. Cyclists all have spiky tyres nowadays and can always get through.

    It is snowing here :-)

(This is not a helpful statement. "Here" is near Innsbruck.)

Deep coating of thick, crunchy white frost on Porty Prom yesterday evening. Also on parts of the beach! Almost like snow, it was so deep. Great fun to ride through but had to be cautious and not go too quickly.

Restalrig path was pretty frosty too.

No sign of any fritting on either, though the path next to Seafield Road was all thawed due to grit sprayed up onto it from the road.

Take it slow on the untreated paths until the warmer weather comes in, I reckon...

The only gritter I saw yesterday was broken down and being towed by a recovery vehicle.

I saw a mini-gritter gritting the pavement of Gorgie Road just at the Dalry Road junction on Monday morning...

If you head out of Edinburgh, take care, the roads towards the Bathgate Alps are black ice. BBC weather forecast suggested it would be e.g. 3°C in Kirkliston at 9am this morning, but reality is it is below zero.
