"Severe weather warning"

(7379 posts)

  1. About 1.30am I was out making sure the fence was going to stay up. Save a toppled plant, some palm leaves, and some shed roofing felt from the mess of a garden next door, tis all as it should be. I think a tree might have been down on the Christian Path - certainly the entire path was blocked by a big truck with a massive claw thing picking stuff up.

A big branch had fallen onto the NEPN near Boswall Ave this morning. It was a bit too heavy and a little on the awkward side to move.

Pic of Tree Here. Can't remember how to post pic in post.

Our fence in the back garden is down. Unfortunately I did not realise this when letting the dogs and cat out this morning for their toilet stop. One dog and one cat came back in, at which point I looked up, and saw... nothing, where a fence used to be. Thankfully I found her after a few minutes frantically running around the street shouting for her.

Boswall Avenue tree was easy to spot @ 08:15 this morning when heading east, but impossible to spot @ 17:00 when heading west. Quite dangerous. I'll have a go posting @nevelbell's pic.

Where was my tailwind home? That's what I want to know!

I was later getting in to work thanks to puncture and the wind, only to find the boss was still stuck in Fife due to bus and train cancellations and was off to find his wife to poach the car off her.

Not had any electrical issues in Balerno either bridge road, Scotmid, church hall environs this weekend. Heating broken in Scotmid but this is a long standing issue that was fixed now broken again and doesn't affect the customers but the poor staff are cold.

    Plenty of snow

Loads of snow out at Newtongrange, a total white-out happened in the space of half an hour, pretty impressive. 20 minutes later when back in Corstorphine, hardly any snow to speak of.

05:20 Another tree down on NEPN just past the Ravelston turn off heading to Roseburn.

You'll have 3 quite substantial branches to negotiate when lifting your bike over...watch your feet don't get entangled.

The wind is very strong on exposed routes (e.g. south of Edinburgh). If I hadn't have been so desperate to get out again (first time outside on bike since before Christmas), I might have thought it too foolhardy.

    Yes, quite windy in Livingston.

I feel quite guilty about the fact that, due to Network Rail shutting down the Scottish rail network on Friday (which I actually think was a sensible thing to do), I travelled both to and from Livingston in a colleague's car...

Meanwhile in Aberdeen (from someone who took the train up this morning) -

"really nice day - no wind, no rain. Feel like I have arrived in another country!"

Much stronger than Friday on my way in today. The worst bit was Gogar Station Road, where I was blown sideways across the road whenever I came out of the shelter of the hedgerow.

Was grinding slowly to a halt, even in the little geats, so bailed out of Glasgow Road just before the Post House hotel and cut onto the path at Pinkhill. Seems whichever way you turned today, the wind was in your face.

Great pictures of the MV Hamnavoe above. The viking looks most appropriate.

Not looking forward to the journey home tonight. Might consider ditching the singlspeed tomorrow morning and bring my geared bike in to try and get my Drumsheugh strava crown back.

@Broony as I turned out of my street this morning I saw a singlespeed slogging it up London Road into the wind.

"Ha, he should have gotten a bike with gears" thought I.

Could I catch him? No, not a chance! I was mightily impressed by his trackstanding into the sidewind.

Haha. I am definitely catchable wind or not. I was close to tears whilst heading along Corstorphine Road into the headwind last week. Today seems a lot worse so I might just snap this time. Pray for a change in wind direction.

It's a desperate plea but you never know.

This morning our office cleaner asked in disbelieving tones if I'd cycled to work (cue rain fit for a Holywood Biblical epic battering on the windows). Mandopicker's affirmative response yielded a curious mix of respect and disbelieving pity.

    'Are there nae busses son?'

    'Not from Musselburgh...'

I followed this up by noting I took my bike on the train.

Curiously when I tell my Glasgow-based colleagues I live in Musselburgh and they spy my cycling helmet and other kit, they ask (semi-serious) whether I cycle all the way from Musselburgh. That said, when I work in Edinburgh many of my colleagues seem quite impressed that I cycle from Musselburgh to Leith when it's rainy/windy/frosty...

There are warnings from the Met Office until Thursday now (wind today, then ice and snow then wind).

"wind today, then ice and snow then wind"

I'll have the ice and snow (to test my spikes).

"many of my colleagues seem quite impressed that I cycle from Musselburgh to Leith when it's rainy/windy/frosty..."

What's the balance between contempt and jealousy?

What might convince them to try - even just on sunny days?

@Broony84 - Haha, I often talk to the wind and rain when it's in my face. Mainly profanities under my breath and the threat of moving to a country with a better climate.

Going to change the rear gear to an 18 tooth on the single speed for tonights journey home, due to the mentalness of today's weather!

"change the rear gear to an 18 tooth on the single speed"

Indeed, post virus ride in this morning, I think I was hitting 6 or 7 mph against that wind on the broomie path.

    Too tired even for expletives.

Normally takes me a few months to question my singlespeed wisdom, but its only 2nd week of january.

Maybe getting too old. Might need gears........
