"Severe weather warning"

My commute was also interesting. I came in on the snow monster - 11 mph rolling average - isn't there space in the market for a transformer bike? It was nice dry and relatively mild to start with. Then a heavy shower came in. Blasted with ice cold rain, I could have done with the beanie (for the ice cream headache) and over-trousers stored snugly in the Carradice. Oh well - hopefully the return will be fun.

Trying to snow at the west side of Edinburgh.

I would much rather have ridden my town bike today and given its new bike computer a test, but after looking at the forecasts I erred on the side of traction and took the spiky tyred monstrousbike again.

I chose my singlespeed with 23mm slick tyres. Perhaps the wrong choice.

was nice on the way in on the A8 with that wind though. Legs were spinning.

    SNOW IN EH1.

"isn't there space in the market for a transformer bike?"

There was a clip going around a few years ago of someone pootling around a Russian street on a bike which could pop between low-slung-roadster and tall-bike configurations whilst moving.

Seeing as rubber doesn't have a piloerector reflex, what about a tyre with a channel running around the circumference between the carcass and tread, with a strong fabric band running through the channel, with spines hinged to it, which would usually lie flat or retracted but could be erected/made to protrude by pulling the band a few mm? Perhaps two sets of channels/bands/spines, so that you'd have something to pull against when erecting/retracting and for multiple-direction grippiness?

I waterproofed up this morning in preparation for heavy rain/sleet/snow but I seemed to find a window of fairly pleasant weather, although the wind was quite strong. I have been observing sporadic flurries of snow, followed by sun and blue(ish) sky - nothing seems to be sticking so I'm hoping that it stays thus for cycling home later.

bbc weather app's gone back to 'light snow showers' ; had said heavy earlier this morning. think it was snow/sleet last night.

If you look at the hourly forecast though - it has heavy snow from about 1600.

Yeah, I may try to get away earlyish today and beat the heavy snow, depending on how things progress until then.

I have nice wide wheels so I'm not worried. Might be a bit chilly in my shorts mind :)

    Transport Minister Derek Mackay sez:

We'd advise everyone to drive carefully

    I don't drive, Derek. Many people don't.

and btw, please tell Transport Scotland to get with it and stop lumping pedestrians and cyclists together by default.

I'm going to have to learn to ignore these warnings.

I left the bike this morning in anticipation of heavy snow during rush hour. No sign of it and I'm on a packed bus home.

    Sigh.

Snow report: lightest of scatterings on untreated surfaces in Gilmerton and Eskbank. No need for snowbike today - but I suppose it classifies as resistance training.

It's now settling quickly in Eskbank

Got a centimetre of pretty white snow lying in Roslin.

The Loanhead path was a test even for Schwalbe Winters; very nearly came off on the Bilston Glen viaduct, and of course made things worse by putting my feet down.

Bit of snow in balerno. Made it home before it came down. Had to go back out to retrieve a brownie.

Allowed lots of time to get here and now I am early! Roads clear & the bit of the NEPN I used was fine. Chilly, though.

Snow was settling on my saddle, though quickly melted when I brought it in.

Just had an interesting walk home from the cinema, during which I just about managed to stay upright. Given the continued low temperature and possible further snowfall overnight, I suspect that I will be taking a bus to work tomorrow morning even if it means missing a potential kingfisher spot.

Roseburn path completely treated and cleared this morning (except for the ramp from/to Russell Road). In fact in much better state that the untreated roads in Craighleith, for example. But even there, I didn't find it too slippery (I guess the snow is quite "sticky")

Seriously treacherous on the backstreets - I was really pleased to have winters, albeit only on the front, but as Uberuce predicted yesterday putting your foot down when you stop is the interesting bit.

Quite a few cars not sporting winter tyres having problems, several pedestrians walking very gingerly on untreated pavements, and far too many cars driving around with their windows all still covered in ice and snow.
