Neighbour lost their finial post. Left a large dent in the window cleaner's car but could have brained someone.

Boss reports mass train cancellations after arriving at Haymarket. Bike spaces 1/3 occupied compared to yesterday, but including the semi-permanent summer-only ones which were probably not ridden in this morning.

Not pleasant going west along Grange Road with what felt like hail or just very sharp and fast rain being blown into my eyes. Remarkably windless on the bike path between the Scotsman and Pollock for some reason. Blown backwards a couple of feet at the ASL on the WAR when I took my hands off my brakes to take off my buffhat.

Police are advising cyclists not the use the meadows paths. I got hit by (very small) falling tree branch on Fingal place having been advised to go that way by the polis. Went down the middle of Melville drive instead...

Looks like a nice sunny, slightly breezy, day out there - now

According to KB there's been 2" of rain in about 3 hours -

    - though I find that the rainfall recording often seems unreliable.

A young polis man tried to persuade me not to cycle across the Meadows. However, after I challenged him, he did admit that "I can't stop you," but went on "However, if you're killed it's your own responsibility." By some miracle, I survived.

Looked like most pedestrians were turning back, but many cyclists keeping on. Maybe its because we face danger every time we take to the roads.

Given Scotrail killed the Helensburgh train, I was faced with a 50km-each-way cycle up the exposed coastal roads, or a cosy work-from-home day.

    Tough choice...

I could work from home, but I don't like doing so.
So, I went to Haymarket and got one of the few trains that did run this morning. 6 cyclists got off it at Livingston North. I have to admit the cycle into the headwind was less than pleasant, and I walked past the roadworks because I was grinding along so slowly I would have caused problems trying to cycle through.

Blown at a halt a couple of times. Only one person didn't feel the need to give a highly eratic cyclist space. Now taking the P out of another chap in the office who usually cycles in but didn't today...

It would appear that Scotrail has pulled all the trains for the time being - I'm hoping they'll be up and running by 5:30pm!

Setting out for the bus this morning around 08:30, I was initially thinking that I had made a misjudgement based on the very moderate wind and a brightening sky. By the time I made it to the bus-stop, however, it was lashing it down with rain and gusting leaves all over the place. I was very glad to get onto the bus. I was somewhat surprised to see quite a reasonable number of cyclists braving the mad conditions as the bus passed through Tollcross and Bruntsfield, although I was far less surprised to see near empty cycle racks at work.

@Charlethepar - I suspect that was the same young polis man who madly suggested Fingal Place would be a better route than Melville drive.... he didn't half go on about "your own risk" etc, but my ride down a deserted Melville Drive with some other cyclists with the wind behind us was amazing.....

Sure they've used that one once before...
Apparently Lothian Road was infested with escapee bins this morning, causing much slaloming by motor vehicles.

    D. Mains driver has been described on the BBc website as having been rescued - so still alive at least.

Wind seems to be dying down a bit now?

My neighbours' fence blown into my hedge, giving it yet another beating (fence should have been replaced years ago. Ravelston Dykes Road appeared closed (Police car at bottom of hill) so presumably the usual tree blockage. People still out walking their dogs despite the risk of falling debris!

Man rescued when a tree fell on his car in Davidsons Mains Park :-(

I see from the BBC report that the lorry driver was killed on the Boghall roundabout in Bathgate at around 8.10am.

That's on my commute in, and I would generally be going through there around an hour earlier. This news removes any lingering doubt about my decision not to bike it in this morning.

    1120:

East Coast and Virgin have opened trains for passengers to sit and wait in Waverley Station in Edinburgh. Overhead lines near Berwick are down and the bridge at Berwick is closed.

(Meanwhile in Glasgow, Virgin had invited its passengers for a coffee at the Radisson!!!)

My cycle in was a bit scary from Clerwood to Davidsons Mains Park with the cross wind and road flooding being a bit of a problem. I always think it's best to go a bit slower when its windy so I can react to any unexpected gusts. Cycle path is a bit sheltered so apart from a watch out for debris a nice cycle.

I was back on the road at Craigleith and apart from having to abort a right turn at Sainsbury due to a sudden gust fairly plain sailing to Perth Street.

Most folk in the office think I'm a bit mad though :)

    o_0 - tough luck.

There was a storm a couple of Christmas's ago, when we were looking out of our window at tiles being blown off several of our neighbours houses.

Felt completely powerless as we had no way of checking our own roof without going outside.

Just had to sit it out and keep our fingers crossed -fortunately we survived.
