    'Supertides' forecast for Scotland's coast

Not so much severe weather as extreme oceanography.

Hope no ice tomorrow (really trying to figure why last post I can see was three days back but there seems to be more recent action)

Tour of East Lothian just horrendous. We made it to the top and turned back. No traction so no brakes, hands numb. Sitting shivering with other riders in Gifford cafe.

@Cyclingmollie, well done for making it that far! I looked at the forecast and didn't bother to get out of bed... Emailed the organiser before getting another twenty winks.

They don't call this 'The Hell of East Lothian' for nothing!

Another year, another legendary ride though? Good on those that went out (and hopefully will return!)

Snapped chains, hail, wind - Audax at its best ;-)

Amir and I met the snapped chain guy in Gifford. Funny seeing people literally unable to stop shaking with cold, me included. Nice tailwind from Gifford.

That was horrendous and its great to be back home. 25mm tyres ain't made for snow (and neither is the right side of my face)

Best bacon and egg roll ever in Gifford having abandoned the route at Garvald. Good to see amir and Cyclingmollie there - removed any sense of shame at binning it.

It's annoyingly sunny now isn't it!

Well done hankchief for making to Dunbar. Hope you've made it home safely.

Musselburgh. Good cake! Sun is shining (wind is still blowing). 12 miles to home.

Home safe. Quite a day - weather was okay early and late - it was just the middle bit up the hill that was unpleasant - Cold, wet, steep gradient, horizonatal snow, ridiculous headwind, limited traction from snow on the road - what's not to like?

Still, I bagged my century - and this is why

Ahh. My good friend George from Gamma posted a 75 miler through East Lothian on FB but I didn't realise he was audaxing. Good work all.

  21. Nice work HankChief!

Am I reading it correct that only 0.007% of 135,022 people completed all 12 gran fondos? That only makes 9 people, right?!!! (plus 0.45)

Galaxy - my calculator works the same way as yours. Does seem a bit low.

2 other Brits have outed themselves on twitter and I met someone else on ToEL that had done it.

Maybe percentages are done differently in the US of A.

Can report on my experience of yesterday's audax now I've stopped shaking. Made it to the top of Redstone, and thought the worst was over, but the descent was 10x worse. Had to take it very slow due to ice & slush, and my hands and feet were sodden and the coldest they've ever been. Warmed a little on the lonely road to Garvald, and turned for Haddington after deliberating at the junction to Papple. Sat in a cafe in Haddington for half an hour, unable to stop shaking. Met two foreign (English) audax riders and gave them directions back to Edinburgh - they'd abandoned too. Put on another layer for the ride back through Macmerry/Tranent, and felt much better for it.
I reluctantly cleaned my bike before staggering off for a shower.

Also sorry for losing @amir - I was with some Portovelo types, and ended up alone between the two!

Patches of frost and odd bits of ice on the towpath this morning, but it seemed quite fine, although a pedestrian took a slide around the East section of Harrison Park as she gave me possibly a little bit too much space to pass.

No worries @twq. I think @cyclingmollie and I made the right decision to go back after the Rigg control. It was really awful. That day was the first time I've ever walked up the Rigg and hopefully it will be the last time I have to walk down it as well (due to snow/fear).

My experience was much the same as above. Numb hands was a horrible feeling especially when you had to brake so much heading down towards Whiteadder. I managed to get all the way round but it was not pleasant which was made worse with trying to fix a puncture with 2 ice blocks as hands at the Biel Bridge. On a positive, I feel the experience has toughened me up.

Well done Hankchief and the other intrepids on yesterday's TOEL.

Wind today was at least as strong... some scary side gusts even in town.

I popped into Savacentre Cameron Toll at lunchtime today, and timed my ride home to perfection so that I could get a faceful of freezing rain and light snow, and tights so wet I had to spin dry them afterwards.

Temperature on the roof of KB went down 2°C at the back of 6pm this evening; now about 1.5°C at the summit of Edinburgh. A mini tractor was gritting the footway earlier, so it might be a cold start tomorrow.
