    There was a thunderstorm? When?

I took photos of the lightning last night, too. Best activity was between 12.30am and 1am, then the storm cell moved north and east and clouds obscured most of the forks.

Stickman, I had my best results with 10 second exposures at about f/10, using my 35mm prime lens.

I sent one into BBC Breakfast but no idea if they showed it.

  3. As Arellcat says, long exposure. Slightly different set up (initially 18mm, but swapped to 8mm because I wanted more of the sky - about f/11-16 (lens is entirely manual and it was dark, so I was guessing) and 25 second exposure).

@fimm - everywhere! Started noticing little flashes behind the cloud from a little before midnight, but again as Arellcat says, 12.30 to 1 (and I'm a bit further east, so we got another 15 minutes or so of really good stuff), it was going off almost constantly to the south AND east AND west AND north of me in Duddingston. Have seen pics of it over Arthur's Seat, some from Wester Hailes, and from Porty.

    T'was magnificent.

We were woken up by the almighty crash of thunder overhead about 1:20AMish. Opened the curtains to enjoy the light show as the lightning from further afar reflected in the light cloud cover.

This morning's weather forecast suggested there might be another storm passing over Edinburgh later this evening.

I also finally had a chance to upload last night's pics.

Was too knackered to open my eyes but I sensed the flashes through my closed eyelids.

Seems to have been a lot of rain this morning just before most(?) people's commute.

Biblical rain at St Andrews this morning, judging by the coverage of the golf.

A lot of huge pools of water in the gutters as I went to work, but wasn't raining.

It was raining quite a bit at 7:25ish. I deployed my red cycling hood cape. No rain in Livingston.

Was still absolutely throwing it down at about 6.45 when I set off. NEPN much quieter than normal at that time... guess the regulars had (wisely) stayed at home for an extra cup of coffee before heading to work?

Nice day all round. Missed all the rain and tailwinds in both legs of my commute.

Well not so much severe weather as severely bad weather forecasts.

I watched the grey clouds roll over, then checked the Met Office app - including the rain map and the BBC site - no rain forecast for Edinburgh before about 7.

It start - heavily - about 1/4 hour later.

    And kept repeating.

    Likewise.

Checked the forecast and thought that it would stay dry for an short afternoon cycle.

Got to Cramond and the heavens opened. Sheltered for a while at the Falls Cafe. Several coffees (and some cake) later and we eventually decided that we'd just have to brave it.

    Got home very very wet.

I went out without a coat and got drenched for the last 20 minutes of the ride. Torrential.

I was in the 9pm downpour. It was 'only' drizzling when I left, and even then I'd pondered going back inside. Really came down for five or ten minutes when I was riding back along Braid Hills Road. I even had to deploy my spraydeck. The views over to Arthur's Seat and Blackford Hill were good though; long wisps of rain hanging down.

Well not severe but did the pentlands loop with some wiggles and wind was in our teeth all the way round. As always I have written to Nicola sturgeon about this.

The best bit is after penicuick on a left bend at the top of the hill go straight on which takes you to a back road to west Linton. You can ride three abreast. Did this once with kaputnik and PS but had westerly wind that day. I tweak kaputnik's route by going beyond the dolphonton turn and taking the road signed for Glasgow. This takes you to the red barn cafe on the A702. From there take a left to elsrickle then newbigging and a right at kaimend taking you to Lang whang. From there we take left turn to auchengray and woolfords then along to harburn. Longer but less of a slog.

Not that weather forecasts have been particularly reliable lately.

Seems to be warmest morning for a while too.

I have a friend attempting to cycle Aberdeen to Edinburgh starting today. She's got a heavy steel city bike, 9-speed and loaded with racks.
I wasn't sure whether to mention the wind forecast, to keep her spirits up! I'll be joining for Dundee - Edinburgh.
Off topic a little, but anyone know a good place to stay in or around Montrose?

    "

TORRENTIAL rain across eastern Scotland on Friday poses a “significant” risk of disruption from flooding, the Met Office warned today.

The agency issued a yellow - “be aware” - severe weather warning for more than 2in of rain, which it said would be persistent and heavy.

The meteorological experts at the, ah, Daily Express declare this could be the worst winter in 50 years. Think lots of snow, as early as October.

Where did I put the Schwalbe Winters...?

Don't they have that headline every year? Is that based on the guy that forecasts using sheep entrails or something equally scientific?

    Posted 9 years ago #
  30. Daily Express headlines since 2012:

    2012 - 'coldest winter for 100 years'
2013 - "Worst winter for decades: Record-breaking snow predicted for November"
2014 - 'WINTER 2014 is on track to be the coldest for more than a CENTURY'

There's a brilliant put-down of them in the Grauniad here, which also includes all of the scorching summer predictions which never come true either!
