The forecast plus accumulated tiredness led to me taking a rest day and using the bus today. Hopefully I won't regret it - the traffic on Gilmerton Road was a nightmare yesterday (but okay-ish on a bike).

At least bus users aren't horribly diseased yet. I predict the bus cough cacophony will start soon though.

"Weather forecasters have predicted the coldest Scottish winter in half a century" = Piers Corbyn again (as sponsored by the makers of studded bike tyres?). Perhaps he'll be right this year.

set to rise again monday when wind bACK FROM SOUTH WEST

apparently some airflow from the gulf has split allowing the nor'westerlies in?

Definitely the case that it will be winter in wintertime (Dec-Feb) and that in just over a month the daylight will be on the increase again

I can verify that mini-gritters are out and about on footways as I've just been chased by one.

Curious how the headline is 100% up on the photocaption.

Ice on long dalmahoy I dropped my bike while trying to get on it, bike seems ok but one of the tenants special in the pannier was a total loss. The conti tyres seems to grip, a lot better than my retro 80s freddie mercury style nikes.

Micro-snow at the summit of Edinburgh an hour ago, but not really lying except on a few car roofs. Feels like it'll be properly cold tomorrow morning.

"Feels like it'll be properly cold tomorrow morning"

Perhaps similar to today (with less wind).

    Then comes December 1st!

The Met Office has issued a severe weather warning of snow and ice for most of central and eastern Scotland tomorrow. The yellow warning covers the period from 4am until noon on Tuesday. Up to 15cm of snow is expected to fall across high ground in parts of Scotland and up to 2.5cm could affect lower areas.

Since it may or may not snow, and the main roads will be passable anyway, I've taken a leaf out of SRD's book and put the beastly winter tyre on my bike's front wheel, but kept the back tyre as standard.

Awfy footery, though. I had to completely redo the mudguard's mounts, because it was all neatly tucked around the 42mm tyre, which is now 54mm with knobbles and spikes.

oh yeah. took cycle service longer to adjust the mudguards on the folder than to put on the dreaded marathon winter.

Hmm. I might be prepared to take mine to work to fit at lunchtime but I'm not doing it now. I think I left enough space under my guards to let the spikes pass freely.

MrSrd's just got in, says no signs of freezing between Cloisters and here - although he was on spiky tyre, so might have missed it.

@chdot I usually set off around half eight on the bike but would need to have made my decision and be out before that if attempting to catch a bus for a similar arrival time...

I tend to look at a mixture of forecasts, Tweets (a search for "Edinburgh ice" helps to indicate the risk of ice) and CCE with canal towpath conditions being especially useful!
