Given in and fitted the studded tyres to my commuter bike this afternoon in preparation for I'm not sure what.

Don't think you'll need studded tyres in Edinburgh tomorrow, waterproofs on the other hand ...

@wishicouldgofaster: depressingly you're right. When I made the decision to rearrange my Sunday to allow for the fitting of studs, the BBC said it would be 3C tomorrow, and that seemed close enough to 0 to be worth putting on the studs. I see they've now upped this to 5C: if they'd done that earlier I'd still be on smooth rubber for tomorrow rather than the Rice Krispie tyres I'll be riding now until spring...

@Greenroofer not sure that I like the idea of any snap, crackle or pop in the context of bikes yet guaranteed grip is appealing.

Another - slightly more positive - revision to the Bbc forecast - no longer showing solid rain all day.

Really don't understand this forecasting nonsense, 8 hours ago this site showed two blobs of rain right through to 5pm.

    Now none -

They worked very well on Sunday, when it was icy. A bit clickety clackety for the other 24 days they have been on.

But just think of the extra work out our legs are getting over winter. Come spring we'll be flying...

A lot of water on the roads. Granville terrace particularly bad heading into town.

Aye, it was raining all night and much of this morning. Unusually heavy and persistent for Edinburgh.

Water of leith has been high and Harlaw reservoir fullest it has been for years. Long drainage ditch heading back to the Rangers centre from thriepmuir reminding me somehow of the Volga. Curious as I do not know what the Volga looks like but deep and straight and stretching for miles. Anyway the water in the ditch was reported to be over the path. The walk round the reservoir yesterday was hoaching. Doubt any but hardiest dog walkers will be out today

Thanks it is just like that. Or maybe I am thinking of The Don flowing quietly,

The Harlaw drainage ditch is not quite as wide as The Don (the Russian Don). Thanks to crowriver for the photos.

Roads very quiet. Wind not nearly as bad as some I've cycled in (for my short commute anyway). Less water on the roads than on Boxing Day (unsurprising since the rain started relatively recently).

That said, I can't believe just how much rain we're having the past couple of months. It was quiet on the roads this morning, which was great, though my ride to work was supremely gusty. I was glad I put the roof back on the torpedo.

    Might 'escape'

'Escape' to Perthshire today not so easy.

As happens every year at this time the railway north of Perth is flooded.

Abellio are looking for buses. Just as well the A9 is a bit more robust. I like the train but in reality it's not a reliable way of travelling in poor weather.

The ride to work along the towpath this morning was a bit grim. I didn't see many other bikes or people.

I wore thick waterproof gloves, peaked headgear, Buff, waterproof(ish) ProViz jacket, baselayer, Ron Hill Bikester trousers and Goretex over-trousers. On my feet I had...
    ...wellies.

I really wasn't up for wet feet this morning, and it was great to be able to ride through the puddles with no concern about whether my feet would stay dry.

I'm going to keep an eye out for welly-clad cyclists now.

I got very, very, very damp after dropping the car at Seafield for an MOT about half nine. Not the IDEAL weather to cycle to Newington, it turned out. Squelch.

Very bad once we got into Scotland today. That is rare usually the stretch from tebay to the toll road is snarled as it was horrendously nose to tail on way down.

Abingdon under water. We could maybe have avoided by coming up the west coast but the lure of the chips at tebay and the roads you are most comfy with too strong. Was fine really until Dumfries.

The Met Office warned parts of north-east Scotland could experience offshore waves of up to nine metres – taller than two double-decker buses.

First frozen commute of the season for me, through Linlithgow. Forecast is for rain later and dropping below zero tonight.

So I think that means time to change to studly tyres.

I experienced minor wheel slippage on the canal towpath this morning. Whilst the puddles were mostly just slushy rather than fully icy, any water that had been displaced from the puddles by passing cyclists and pedestrians was starting to freeze into thin sheet ice on either side of them, which made things get momentarily interesting when I was attempting to exit the 'S' bend at Wester Hailes. I experienced some more brief slippage as I was climbing Hermiston House Road shortly after leaving the towpath.
