Some iced puddles and crispy grass on Leith Links this morning, but nothing nearer town. Fortunately I discovered a new pair of fat 38mm spiked tyres in one of my boxes of things last night; I'd forgotten I'd picked up cheap somewhere last winter after being impressed at the 30mm Winters. Unfortunately the bike they were bought for is being decommissioned but I expect they'll fit on the properbike.

I decided to postpone a bit of hill training this morning didn't think the back roads of Balerno would be particularly safe given the ice and frost round the gyle. Went for a slightly weary run instead.

Well, I went down this morning, along with the person next to me. Huge sheet of black ice, across a major arterial road (Victoria Rd in Glasgow). Appear to have escaped unscathed apart from some scratched brake hoods.

Councillor is investigating why the road wasn't gritted, but spikes are definitely going on tonight...

Victoria Rd is a fast one then? - Could have been very nasty.

    Ouch.

    Glad you seem unscathed.

Yup, major bus/cycle route and marked as an artery on all the GCC maps. Definitely a mistake; should have been gritted. There was a bus behind us, but managed to go around us both.

Happily the upright is so enormous it took the bulk of the impact on the front wooden box, handlebars and trailer hitch!

  6. Was due to get back to cycling to work next week (didn't start during my first week back as I was trying to get my sleep patterns back on track after 3 weeks of terrible, interrupted sleep).

This morning I heard the forecaster say that winter finally sets in next week. Bah. As I never risk the chance of ice (and subsequent meeting of body with tarmac), I guess it'll be turbo time again until things warm up a little again.

(Used to cycle in all weathers, but after two uneventful winters my luck ran out and too many falls and expensive bike damage over the next two saw me get a lot more cautious and risk-averse!)

@LothBordPolice: Sorry for the typo in our earlier post, taking your "heed off" is not an appropriate response to a yellow snow warning -taking "heed of" is!

The lids of my grey and green bins had frozen shut overnight.

Only 2° on indicator at MMW. 79 cyclists at 10am. Freezing.

"Only 2° on indicator at MMW."

Always thought that thermometer was 'fast'.

    Has MMW been gritted?

MMW has been gritted but is still a bit slippy.

Aspa and I both came off our bikes on Parkside Street, I was on the new segregated bit at the junction with St Leonards. Am now shuffling like an old man.

I know this has been asked before, but is there a list of the priority cycle routes that are gritted?

Was wild down by woolfords south Lanarkshire this morning. Blizzards with the snow not quite freezing on the ground which was lucky

Almost snowing a little bit at the summit of Edinburgh.

I managed to get thoroughly wet yesterday evening on a photography outing. Someone ought to invent lycra bike shorts with a lining of Polartec fleece on the front.

An hour or so of snow in Airdrie but it has stopped now. I was in the car and my phone decided to play Too Hot by Prince Buster. And they call them smart phones.

@arellcat, I had my endura bib-longs on today. They are designed for winter. Waterproof on the outside with fleece inside. No pad so if needed need to get underpants with pad. I thought they might be too warm today but they were not.

Brrr that was a cold and wet ride today. Humbie Hub cafe was lovely though, with live music to accompany the well earned unhealthy food

There is water bubbling out of the manhole covers at Good's Corner. Wet, wet, wet.

Just a heads up that there's black ice on Barnton Ave past the golf course path heading East. Myself and another rider both came down at the same time. Entire road looks untreated, ended up riding on the pavement for a bit. Anyone know which team this needs reported to?

Phoned it in and also stuck something on ECC main twitter page. Lady I spoke to had a feeling that section of road was private though?

I had a couple of nasty moments on ice this morning too firstly approaching the Cramond Brig and then later approaching the gate across the path west of Dalmeny.

Both times I slid under braking but thankfully had enough space to release the brakes and try again.

I must have been lucky at those points this morning, although I have come off at that gate before. Access is dreadful there!

Yesterday evening out Balerno way things were a bit sleet-tastic. Parts of the upper WoL path are under rather a lot of water, too. These observations brought to you due to my decision to take the knobbly bike out to Balerno from in town, in the dark, on the grounds that it would be "fun". I was impressively wet on arrival. Sleeting/raining so hard most of the mud washed off as soon as it splashed on, which was nice...

The canal towpath was submerged for 10-20 metres prior to and partly including the 'S' bend along from WHEC this morning. That and other smaller, but unavoidable, puddles in the vicinity were deep enough for my feet (fortuitously clad with waterproof overshoes) to break the surface as the pedals bottomed out each revolution. Things could be even more interesting later in the week if the puddles freeze over/through, given that they are unlikely to evaporate completedly before it gets colder.
