¼ of the puddles on Leith Links icy. Leith Walk fine, except for the odd patch of secondhand snow where a vehicle has shed its load.

Keeping off the back paths here in Livingston as they look pretty icy. Roads were fine, of course.

On my way in this morning I saw two cyclists in shorts and one without gloves. Brrrrr

Had the obligatory front wheel skid this morning coming through Sainsbury's MurrayfieldGorgie. Managed to stay up though - whoop whoop.

    How's the NEPN?

Is it being gritted early 'enough'?

@chdot NEPN treated and totally fine well before 0700 yesterday. Not sure about today... took the day off following an unfortunate tumble near Murrayfield.

Don't know whether to install last year's 30mm spikes on the properbike tonight or keep them free for the incipient fixie and try and get the 38mm spikes I rediscovered in a box onto the properbike's more accommodating frame, which carries the risk of discovering that they're too fat to fit with mudguards and having to put the 30mm ones on anyway (rather than do without mudguards, which is unwise).

Exactly the same as me Kev - working from home today with a big hydrocolloid on the top of my thigh to hopefully heal the rank road rash!

I've had the front spikes on for a few weeks. Last night I fitted the rear spikes and I'm glad I did.

Person in front of me this morning took a tumble at the Wester Hailes towpath S-bend. She had front spikes only and the back slid out.
    Fortunately she was ok.

@Snowy that was a different colleague of mine to the one who fell off around there yesterday. She thinks that the main reason that she went over was because her rear tyre lost grip on the metal drain cover. She was appreciative of your help in any case. I took the bus into work today.

@mcsparshatt Ouch! I got off lightly in comparison, I think... just a bit of a scraped elbow and knee for me was all. On future icy days, I've decided to stay away from the quiet, back roads!

    Hope you're feeling better soon.

Lots of minuses in the overnight forecast so 30mm spikes are on. If I get a puncture it'll be very tempting to just give it to a shop to repair rather than go through the misery of the Schwalbe fitting-ordeal again.

Front spikes only today for me and went along long dalmahoy road. Error for me but if I had gone for a71 would have been holding up the cars and also the right turn to Ratho tricksy. Still wish I had done this.

A good few hours fettling and prepping the winterbike for tomorrow, been at least a year since the pedals have turned (although thankfully it's been indoors the whole time, so no corrosion to deal with). Spikes, hub gears and drum brakes it is. Bring on winter!

I get a puncture it'll be very tempting to just give it to a shop to repair rather than go through the misery of the Schwalbe fitting-ordeal again.

Must be a rim compatability issue? On the Mavic A319 rims the 30mm Schwalbe winters are fairly easy to get on.

When brand new they were relatively easy to get into the sparebike, which had an Alex TZ19 at the front and something else at the back. Rigida Sputniks didn't allow me to push the bead right down on the areas surrounding the not-seated-yet bit.

Studs on this morning, but on my feet. Another bus commute. I should really get the winter winter bike up and running this weekend.
I'll have to face up to my turbo demon* thus evening in recompense.

*only one demon required as I'm very weak willed

BTW pavements are treacherous in Eskbank

yep, pavements very frosty in Corstorphine. Suspect the back streets will be icy. I'm also on the bus - my fall from the other day has developed a rather large bruise on my hip/thigh, another on the knee which I didn't expect and a sore shoulder. They'll heal. More annoyed about the scraped shifter on the bike.

this time of year really frustrates me. Its just sooo much easier to get in the car, its warm, the council goes to great lengths to ensure the roads are prepped and safe, its warm, if you do slip odds are you'll come to no harm, its warm and lastly its warm.

If I take my bike, its 50/50 if I'll get out of the estate alive between the ice, rat runners and civil servants rushing to try and get a space at Saughton House. Once I do get out the main roads are fine, but they're congested (see above) the back roads and paths are dangerous. So busy roads it is.

If I walk its difficult to get a rhythm up and you end up with sprains and sore muscles from trying not slide on the frost and ice for the entire trip.

Fitted my studded tyres to the mountain bike last night, so was able to ride in with some confidence this morning, albeit slowly. Huge amounts of faffing last night as it dawned on me I'd also need to charge a battery light (no dynamo on mtb), dig out a 26 inch spare tube, etc, etc. Just as well I enjoy it, really.

Roseburn park very icy where standing water and leafmush have frozen.

Surrounding streets heavily frosted, couldn't tell if there was black ice underlying as had spikes on so it felt fairly good underwheel

I've contacted the Council East team about ice and mulchy leaves on the Innocent Railway. If anyone else uses it and is getting tired of the mess, please do contact them as they apparently respond to complaints.
I did feel a bit cheeky when they asked where the leaves were - I responded "under the trees".

Roslin's been a winter wonderland since Wednesday night, but I've resisted the siren song of studs thus far. I'd have to buy new mudguards to fit 30mm studlies(let alone 35's) and I can't be bothered installing them.

The ice means my usual pleasantly bucolic loop is too risky, so I'm stuck on the boring and urban-feeling trunk routes, which are gritted well enough that I've never felt any loss of traction.

Rode into work (St Andrews Sq) from Dunfermline this morning. Consciously avoided all cycle paths/routes and stuck to roads which had been treated. The irony of avoiding NCN1 and using the main roads for safety isn't lost on me.

Temperature could fall to -10C in Scotland

The Met Office has warned that temperatures could fall as low as -10C in parts of Scotland overnight on Friday and Saturday. It has also issued a yellow "be aware" warning for ice for southern, north east and northern Scotland.

The Met Office said temperatures would fall sharply after dark on Friday and its warning is in place until late Saturday morning. Roads, cycle ways and paths could be affected, forecasters said.

BBC Scotland weather presenter Christopher Blanchett said -10C was possible, but in remote inland areas of the Highlands and Aberdeenshire. He added: "Towns and cities will be sub-zero, but not double digits. Maybe -2 to -4C."
