@HankChief yikes! I'm glad not to have encountered it in that state. I complained about the glass and referred to the flooding and ice issues on Wednesday. Apparently the team went back out to "pick up what they can". Pointless.

How is the ice today? It's mostly looking wet out my back window although trying to judge the conditions from that is risky...

    Looking at the overnight temperature

I think it's wise to assume that 'the usual places' have frozen.

Also reasonable to expect main roads will be fine.

The last month (a reminder of how 'extreme' Dec was!)

Melting in Eskbank but the paths are still sketchy in places. Main roads look fine.

Still a few bits of compacted ice under the rain-melted slush on the Restalrig path, including the Hawkhill slope. Marathon Winters allowed me to maintain my grip but not to retain the air in my tube.

    Severe weather happens...

I used to live in the stair by the pile of rubble in first pic (years later!), never heard about this.

I wandered out to the bus stop around half eight and as I did so was already starting to regret my decision not to cycle given how wet and relatively not cold it felt. Seeing that the bus tracker was suggesting that my bus was delayed by 10 minutes, I rashly decided to go back to the flat, changed, packed my pannier and set out on the bike. As I set out again, a bus (the next one after the one that was delayed I suspect, but I'm uncertain) passed me. I took it cautiously along the towpath and completely avoided the section that HankChief photographed above. The path was a little snowy and icy in places, but I didn't feel any loss of grip and took it very easy. The only point where my wheel slipped was going over the bridge as I exited the towpath onto Hermiston House Road. As I arrived at Heriot-Watt Campus, the bus that had passed me as I was setting off in town passed me again. As I passed the bus-stop that I would normally alight at, it and another bus of the same number (the earlier delayed one I'm guessing) were just arriving... Bike wins!

Was mostly wet this morning but brass monkeys too! The only ice I encountered was the new section of path at Burnshot on the A90 path which was still completely frozen and resembled an ice rink.

I don't know if it's something about that section of tarmac, but I've come off there before in 'relatively' mild conditions i.e not icy elsewhere. Felt my back wheel sliding away today, how I stayed upright is beyond me.

I walked along the WoL from Roseburn to Stockbridge yesterday. Despite some large patches of ice there were quite a lot of cyclists out, none of whom had studded tyres as far as I could see. Not sure if they were confident, foolhardy or not expecting the ice.

None of the tyre tracks in the snow on the Hawkhill wiggleslope yesterday (none of which appeared to have skidded at the corners) appeared to have been spikes. There was also one peculiar double-tracked trail which I think was possibly a Swegway.

I assume the raised part of the A90 suffers from a combination of being raised from the surrounding terrain, having a smooth surface and having badly installed drainage. Which doesn't just leave it wet and prone to freezing but ensures that the surface offers no grip once frozen.

However, the other part of my commute to/from Fife where I often encounter ice is Cramond Brig which is a different surface and topography so my hypothesis may not be right.

Cramond Brig is just a typical frost hollow, not helped by having a bridge which always seem to atrract more ice, presumuably becasue of the cold air being able to flow underneath it.

Decided to bottle out and wait until the temperature increases on Friday. Good decision this morning I think, given how tricky it was to walk!

@acsimpson yup, have came off at the Brig too just across the bridge. Was only going a few mph mind as I'd slowed for a couple of dog walkers who kindly stopped to as if I was ok. I did the 'bounce back up, nothing to see here, move along please' thing and shuffled off with dented pride! ha.

@edintravel: Morning Edintravellers! Chilly start with some icy patches likely, esp on untreated surfaces. Gritters treating priority 1 routes since 5am.

All clear on my route this morning. Even our little road which is never treated. It almost seemed warm!

Yes, I started out walking to work because I was expecting black ice, but it turned out to be so obviously too warm that I went back for the bike. Lovely. No ice whatsoever on my route through Newington, the Grange, Sciennes or the Meadows.

The canal towpath was fine this morning, although I have yet to venture onto the notorious Wester Hailes 'S' bend.

High wind forecast for tomorrow? Colleague who lives out aways wondering whether to cycle. Anyone able to update in the morning?

Edit - just checked forecast and I see now wind isn't supposed to pick up until afternoon.

Tuesday looks rather grim too: strong winds and pouring rain too...

Good day to do some DIY around the house, methinks!

A WEATHER warning is in place for the Scotland as the blizzard which has wreaked havoc on the eastern seaboard of the United States heads for the UK.

Storm Jonas, which saw 60cm of snow fall on the east coast of America at the weekend – bringing cities including New York to a standstill, killing at least 19 people and leaving more than 100,000 homes without power – is to cause torrential rains and strong winds in parts of Scotland and the rest of Britain.

Weather experts said the amounts of rainfall north of the border could rival that seen in December and early January.

Black wind measurements on BBC weather seem to be for gust speed rather than overall wind speed these days. Obviously gusts can be dangerous and strong winds with precipitation of any kind is grim but don't be put off too easily by the large numbers especially if you're having to head into it.
