Very mild and dry on the way home this evening, despite the threat of immersion and puffing.

Operator Amey said: “The bridge is expected to be closed to cyclists and pedestrians throughout the day, and remains closed to HGVs while repairs to the truss end links continue.

    And, http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/2650225

Wind speeds at commuting time are on the scary side of high. Expecting 60mph gusts at 8am. That's "I'm having trouble standing upright" sort of speed.

Be aware of the potential for difficult driving conditions and disruption to travel and power supplies. "

Never mind the driving. sounds as though it's going to be hard work/dangerous walking.

All the schools in Orkney have been closed for Friday. Not often wind forecasts cause that! (I will vouch for 80 mph gusts being enough to bend the door of a car forward onto the wing then start it rolling seaward with the handbrake on, and it's meant to gust to 90 in the North Isles tomorrow.)

Wheelie bins flying past our window like autumn leaves. My husband has bailed out of cycling which is very unusual!

Don't do it. Stay in bed!

I was managing 4mph heading West. The cones at Gogar Roundabout were on the move. Chaos.

Was blown without too much incident to Haymarket, where my train left on time... however when I got to Livingston I got a lift (with the Brompton) in the minibus - the driver had offered when it was cold, so I knew it was possible (otherwise I'd probably have gone the very long way round on the paths).

Just saw two cyclists on the canal path. One looked to be braking a fair bit. Other blowing along...scary. Wondering now if the bloke was gembo?

Bus for me today. I draw the line at 50mph gusts and Roslin was forecast to top 70.

As I was being shoved along the pavement to the tram stop in St Andrew's Square I didn't regret my decision at all.

I got to Waverley with only minor incident; several moments of being blown sideways - luckily not too much traffic. Big communal bins on Lochend Road being blown into the street. Nearly taken out by driver joining Lochend Road without looking at all - why do so many drivers treat conditions like today's as a time for *less* care? Got to Waverley to find Scotrail have reduced my route to an hour service without passing that info on to their website...

Struggled to walk along the Broomhouse Path today, saw one guy attempting it on his bike, rather him than me.

Made it up Leith Walk without incident.

Saw a man walk out of Storries and turn down the hill. The communal wheelie bin that was coming down the hill from the corner of Dalmeny Street was getting closer and closer but there was no way I could let him know, 3 floors up in a howling gale. The bin was really picking up speed and about to body-check him across the pavement, pies everywhere. Luckily he heard/sensed it at the last minute, jumped out the way, spun round and grabbed it. Deft move I thought.

@adamthekiwi, saw you disappear through the barriers at Waverley. Also would agree with both your points: drivers being even more careless in this weather, and train service reduced but not indicated on the app.

A tad breezy this morning right enough, but not quite as bad as I feared. Watch out for strong gusts on Calton Road: lots of debris, cans, refuse etc. blowing around which might hit you. Trains on east coast line to Aberdeen/Dundee//Fife etc. running normally, thank goodness.

If heading west to Glasgow or beyond, just don't bother: widespread rail disruption. Work from home instead.

Advice on Forth FM this morning:

1: "3 cyclists have been seen blown into traffic. Cyclists, don't go out."

Translation: "We're afraid we're going to run you over because we're going about our important business, going too fast and never giving you enough space as usual"

2: "If you're on a bike, just stay at home..." <pregnant pause> "Oh, er, or take public transport"

Yeah, because cyclists can't walk and they don't own cars do they?

Funny, despite several trees down, car accidents and roads blocked, there was no advice to drivers to "stay at home" or to "take public transport"

I think it was the peak of the wind in Meadowbank just around 730AM when I was considering whether to go to the office or work from home. The latter was a bit more appealing, think I made the right decision.

Not as damp as it threatened to be apart from the big squally burst of wind-propelled rain at 08:40. Not an ideal day for going up Leith Walk with one gear but it was merely less enjoyable rather than impossible. I'd have thought that with the wind blowing at my left as I headed south-west uphill that there might be some component of it behind me going along Princes Street, but it was in my face instead.

@eddie_h Last night Transport Scotland was definitely tweeting that people should stay home unless they *had* to travel today.

Cycled across town to work. As ever, danger came from sociopaths behind the wheels of cars, not the weather that was better than most mornings this week.
