Aye, it didn't seem so bad on foot. Except for the gusts. Watch out for the gusts!

I normally cycle regardless, although in winds like this I almost always have at least one incident where the wind violently catches the front wheel that gives me pause for thought. This morning I decided to bus it. It didn't seem too bad on the walk from nursery drop off to the bus stop so I regretted my decision somewhat while I was cramped in the slow smelly can of disease with someone coughing on my shoulder for 20 minutes. The walk at the other end from bus stop to work was pretty brutal with some impressively violent gusts however so I think I probably made the right decision.

1 minute ago it was heaving it down with rain. Now the sun has come out.

  4. I seem to be just as hungry as when I do cycle to work, so I am here munching my way through a packet of biscuits feeling a little guilty that I won't be working them off on my way home :(

Saw a few cycles on my commute. Not as bad as it was on Monday i.e. didn't have to grab hold of things.

On the bike, hardest bit was going down Craigleith Rd and through Stockbridge due to strong gusts. Just slowed down so I could keep control :).

The cycle path going home may be a bit tricky in the dark as there was lots of debris this morning.

If I had got the bus I would have been later by almost an hour with the looks of things!

@srd that might be the very big tree way across from my house which I always wonder if ot could reach me. There would be a lot of wood to burn from it. Bits of it were outside my front door when I set off. The cycle in was fine but the cycle back might be something else. Agree earlier in the week was windier when had to aply brakes when stopped at lights.

"A man in his 30s has been taken to hospital after he was knocked down by flying debris in Edinburgh as Storm Gertrude battered the country.
He sustained head injuries but was said to be conscious when ambulance crews arrived at the scene in Pinkhill at 07:45. He was taken to the ERI.

Meanwhile, a tree fell onto the roof of a bus on Corstorphine Road near Ormidale Terrace at 07:35.
There are no reports of injuries. The road was reopened at 09:49.
Edinburgh city council has now removed the tree."

Apparently the roof has been blown off the fairly new cycle shed which I use at work.

Looks like the winds are supposed to die down for Sunday, but possibility of heavy snow and/or low temperatures overnight on Saturday- wondering how sensible an early morning cycle on Sunday would be...?

@neil early morning sunday should be OK on main roads but might be bad on side streets / back roads (same as the last few sundays). So A70 to Carnwath OK and coast road to North Berwick OK. Is my bet.

@neil the last time I did that there were various streams frozen over the road near Blyth bridge but these were negotiated. You can stop in the region barn at elsrickle if you are inclined

This video is making me homesick for living in Orkney - though not really cycling weather! I used to drive over to the west coast to wave watch when it got like this:

Was the windiest day of the week. Wicked crosswinds this morning on Comiston Road forcing me to slow right down to stay safe. The worst part of the journey was coming across Middle Meadow Walk as the wind was doing it's best to push me off the path in tree or a bin. Was glad to make it to work safely.

Winter wonderland in Balerno, was forecast to fall in the night which it did. Always nice to open the curtain and see it (if you don't need to go anywhere) I am already worried about my train on Monday as the equivalent one on friday to London was cancelled. Makes the one you do get on super crowded. Bit of wind and power lines down.

Dramatic photos show the outer cladding stripped bare across a large section – with a huge crack zig-zagging down another wall. The primary, which was destroyed by a fire in 2001, was rebuilt just a decade ago under a public-private partnership agreement between the council and service provider Amey.

Last night, council bosses confirmed all 17 of Edinburgh’s Amey-run schools, known as “PPP1 schools”, would be checked over by contractors for safety issues.

Kids were delighted to wake up to the snow this morning. Then the sun came out and now it's all gone...

Expelled from Botanics about quarter past three; chap said that though the winds were much less strong they had "primed" some trees to fall and they'd had two down in the past 20 minutes. I looked up a lot on my way out...

Despite having 'decided' to take the bus this morning I ended up cycling in after looking at the BBC Weather one last time before heading for the bus and noticing that they had dropped the gust speed from 50+ mph to the 40s. As I was changing into my cycling gear it then started lashing down with rain so I put all of my waterproofs on. As I set out from the flat the rain stopped and only just started again as I arrived at work so I had to shed layers on the way. It was tough going but not the worst.

THE Forth Road Bridge looks set to be closed to traffic later today as Storm Henry batters the country.

Weather experts have forecast gales becoming “severe and stormy” into this evening, with blustery showers and snow on the hills.

Motorists have been warned to expect disruption throughout today and into tomorrow, with the bridge only remaining open to cars until about midday and a full closure likely to be required later today.

Winds are forecast for this evening at speeds that would close the bridge.

The strongest winds are expected between 9pm and midnight, with very strong winds forecast to continue into Tuesday morning. If the bridge does close then inspections may be required before reopening.

I hope no-one is stuck on the wrong side tonight. I guess I'll be getting the train home.

When I worked at Kew I remember going for a walk in the gardens one windy lunchtime and coming back and finding a massive tree had smashed down right across the path I'd taken twenty minutes before ... quite scary in retrospect
