The canal towpath is still fine. It's mostly just frosty. The ice, where it exists, is fairly obvious and easy to negotiate safely. There was some frost on the Slateford Aqueduct this morning so I dismounted to push my bicycle across. The only other sections that concerned me were the metal covers at either end of the Scott Russell Aqueduct and the exit up and onto Hermiston House Road.

The proof that humans evolved in a warm climate lies in how quickly our digits become useless when the temperatures drop. Functioning fingers are pretty essential for human survival. Even typing becomes difficult!

WITH colder weather set to hit Scotland next month, bookmakers have slashed the odds of a white Christmas in Edinburgh.

Update: NEPN was OK on Saturday morning but quite sparkly so I went slowly. It had all melted by the time I came back.
    Thank you for the advice.

The good thing about the cold days is that the slightly less cold days feel positively warm. Riding at the weekend felt fairly pleasant but if we'd had the same weather in September, it would have felt freezing

Canal still partly frozen last night.

Some youfs had taken ice from the edges and smashed it along the towpath. It looked like broken glass causing me to swerve and stop several times, just in case!

@CJC based on my observations this morning, some of what I thought was merely broken ice does indeed appear to be broken glass given that it has stubbornly refused to melt since yesterday. It seems unlikely that temperatures high enough to melt the glass can be expected for some time to come despite the best efforts of global industrialisation.

Very frosty again. Maybe they were right to be gritting fairly heavily last night. Any towpath reports would be appreciated.

Can't report on towpath, but other paths/roads frosty, but not slippy.

I cycled along the towpath this morning and it was frosty but not slippy. Canal almost completely frozen though.

Another cold night forecast tonight, then some very mild weather on the way.

    Cheers
    Colin

@jdanielp, maybe too late: towpath white but fine. I rode across aqueduct on bike, not slippy. Lots of cyclists. Saw a single deer (see wildlife thread).

Quite an impressive turn-around from feeling distinctly cold, but not particularly likely to freeze last night. I too cycled across the aqueduct without any concern and even the Wester Hailes 'S' bend presented no significant problems, although I would admit to taking it easy over the Scott Russell Aqueduct metal strips and the Hermiston House Road Bridge. I have yet to spot the aqueduct deer.

Just been for a run. The air is thick with pollution and that cold-engine-exhaust smell.

I feel quite sick now, TBH

The Met Office said the storm comes as a deep depression moves north-eastwards across the Atlantic, passing close to the north-west of Scotland on Friday evening and overnight into Saturday.

Storm Barbara will have blown away by Christmas Day, but unsettled conditions are expected to continue.

However, early indications suggest there will be a calmer picture as we head through next week towards Hogmanay and New Year.

My parents have had week of non-stop snow, wind, and storm surges - hope this system moving across the atlantic gives them a break!

I'm strangely nostalgic for Orkney winters looking at the forecast for the rest of the week in the North Isles! Breezy.

According to Irene's contact in Lewis, half of Harris has power off already.

I posted a similar sentiment on facebook earlier, and a friend up in Orkney suggested I: "Recreate the experience. Have a cold shower in your clothes. Disconnect your electricity. Get a friend to hurl grit at your windows. And another to howl, wraith-like, through your letterbox."

    I don't miss the relentless noise of a several-day blow, I admit!

Down a couple gears this morning up the hill to work but was mostly strong gusts rather than a sustained headwind

There was a council gritter wandering disconsolately through the cool, rain-lashed streets round our way this morning. Driver and passenger looking baffled and consulting devices.

Heriot-Watt Campus was heavily gritted yesterday morning for no obvious reason. Today we just have salty puddles.

No gritting planned just now. Keep dry and hold onto your hats.
