@jdanielp it was a little icy Tuesday evening cutting through heriot watt campus.which I had not anticipated so maybe gritting was called for?

I got a proper in-your-face high winds hailstorm cosmetic treatment yesterday - proper weather. I haven't experienced that painful but invigorating experience for a while. Both kids fast asleep and dry and oblivious.... good test for the trailer's rain cover.

Walking to the station this morning was fine until I hit the A8 at which point the weather changed up a gear, brolly down and sprinted the last 100m by which time my trousers were ringing.

Edinburgh Gateway (as opposed to South Gyle) is very pleasant in such conditions being fully weather proof, however as anyone who has been in a warehouse in a hail storm knows it wasn't quiet.

Left the house in a not unpleasant rain, got about 5 minutes from the house hit that hail/sleet storm. I had to turn back I was in shorts (running) and I couldn't see for the ice falling in my eyes. Miserable.

I went out at about 7.15 - nice and dry - stars twinkling. So I went the long way, aiming for a December distance PB. Big mistake. 4 miles in the heavens opened - freezing cold rain - floods over the roads and paths - 6 miles into a very stiff wind - numb/drenched feet and raw thighs due to undue optimism on the clothing front. But the shower at work was lovely!

I found myself wearing two fleeces with the heating on yesterday evening. Round trip to Pencaitland with wind and a couple of light sluicings colder than I thought.

Having been completely drenched on four separate occasions yesterday (don't ask), I was preparing to break my long streak of bike commutes and head for the bus when the morning hailstorm hit, but it was much better once all the kids had been dropped off so did cycle in. Though I assume the ride back won't be as nice with the wind in my face.

@gembo ah. I take it they hadn't gritted at that point? It seems that there has been a level of reactive gritting again this morning although most of it has dissolved into the fresh puddles, but I did see some evidence of slushy ice up against the west edges of buildings and vegetation.

Looks like wind won't be too bad, probably rain.

    Then absurdly warm again tomorrow

Big hail shower in Balerno 7a.m. one sheet of lightning and peel of thunder too. Lot of rain unable to drain from roads (maybe as hail blocking gutters? or just too much precipitation). Had to cycle down middle of road. Gingerly, with 2 bottles of Chateau Neuf du Pape and a bottle of Priorat in my panniers.

Was actually ok once swung on to canal towpath at slateford station.

Chap overtook me at bridge before bypass and was driven at by car coming out of the side st. Driver acknowledge with mea culpa wave.

  13. It was all pretty reasonable this morning until I hit Princes St. That hail was blasted at me and was pretty sore. Didn't let up until I hit Roseburn.

Managed to stay pretty warm throughout (except my fingers) but I don't think I've ever been so wet whilst clothed included life guard training.

Quiet office so managed to procure heaters to dry stuff.

Honourable mention to the Oxford waterproof rucsac I won in the EBC countdown to christmas giveaway/draw. All my contents were bone dry

Lots of rain and wind in west Edinburgh, and next to no sunlight either.

It's going to be a lovely commute.

Horizontal sleet, filthy water gushing out of drain covers at Good's Corner, standing water everywhere, drivers driving like they were fleeing the apocalypse.

Short travel suspension, high intensity LED lights, Goretex and hydraulic brakes be thanked.

looks calm at the gyle. If you're in town and thinking of leaving, give it 5.

    So this is Christmas -

Assuming this was remotely accurate, does it mean that the Forth Valley could expect to be extremely turbulent or a bit calm??

Big flooding Polwarth gardens just past Scotmud heading out of town (ie usual place). Expect cars on wrong side of the road.

@SRD I encountered that flooding this morning in the dark, with a Number 27 bus right behind me and a traffic island to my right: I had no alternative but go straight through it. My shoes squelched all the way to work...

This evening, with some of my gear damp and some dry I threw caution to the winds and came home down the WoL path. It was filthy fun, but the torrential rain I encountered for the last 20 minutes rinsed quite a lot of the filth off and I arrived home reasonably clean and, for the second time that day, very wet.

I also lost about 500g of the Pencaitland railway path from my front mech.

Greenroofer, I did that once in the middle of a thunderstorm, caned it all the way down Colinton dell as fast as possible to get home with my daughter on the tag along. I have a very funny photo of the result (I didn't realise that my daughter was getting the brunt of the mud full in the face all the way home).

@arellcat just curious - how weatherproof is the quest in midwinter conditions such as today?

I wish I'd been using the big red machine today! But after work I had an appointment, during which time I wouldn't dare leave it parked outside on the pavement. I rode my Brompton and got wet, and my feet became very cold.

That said, the Quest is brilliant in bad weather. The wheels are completely enclosed and separated from the inside. The only places the weather can get in are the cockpit (obviously) and the gap around the front lights (any rain coming in there simply drains out through the foot holes). If I have the foam spraydeck in place and my waterproof cap I'm warm and happy in pouring rain; if I install the roof as well I can ride in sleet and snow and be really quite warm and dry.

I shall probably use it tomorrow, because the windier it is outside, the better the Quest tends to go. Head winds simply don't exist, and side winds push you forwards. It's a little more interesting when you're stopped with the brakes on and the wind starts to push the tail around.

Sounds fantastic... There is a seed planted in my mind that I feel will grow if I ever manage to scrape the money together.....

By gum its windy. Couldn't get the shuttle car door open such was the force of the wind blowing it shut.
