This habit of naming normal seasonal weather systems is going to wind up being a case of the boy who cried wolf when something really bad comes

Icy tricky conditions in clerwood/drumbrae an hour ago but it's probably fine now as the temperature has went up.

    Mind the ice.

I was concerned there might be ice, but the roads and paths from Fife were bone dry this morning with barely a hint of frost. WIth the right gear on and fuelled with porridge, it was a lovely morning for a ride.

Yup - recorded minus 5 on the commute this morning.

My hands were very cold, so I'm now shopping for some gloves that will work at this temperature. Lots of the review sites seem to classify winter gloves as 0 to 10...

@chrisfl Agreed, five minutes off the train this morning and my big sealskinz weren't really doing the job!

I also had to stop to put gloves on today

Now looking at the Rapha deep winter gloves on sale, but still probably too expensive to justify. Forcast for the next week looks okay....

I regretted wearing my Altura liner gloves rather than the heavy duty Night Vision gloves that they came with for a while this morning, but then my hands warmed up again. My feet were quite chilly by the time I reached work though so I maybe should have worn thick rather than Coolmax socks and/or real shoes instead of cycling shoes.

@chrisfl those gloves are pricey plus you must apply glove balm!?

  21. It's all my fault. After two back-to-back colds with a nasty cough, and the Xmas break, I was due to start cycling to work again this week.

The weather gods have obviously decided that they fancy a laugh at my expense.

I was about to return to two wheels after a lovely fortnight of festive sinusitis. Then I managed to sprain BOTH ankles (not badly, but enough to be puffy & unhappy with clipping out - ah the joys of a slippery path, unstable ankles, overcompensation after starting to turn one of them, failure to actually do physio prescribed exercises that would make them less unstable*, and quite a lot of wine...). So I will be quite pleased if the weather is horrible for the next week or so!

*so I now have a proper 2017 resolution - to actually do the stuff the physio told me to do. Yes, even if it's boring. Bah!

Having woken early to hear the rain lashing against my window, I was looking forward to testing out my new soft shell winter kit in some truly difficult conditions.

Alas, by the time we left the house it had stopped raining and I overheated :-(

Maybe I'll do another trial with it later in the week...

@hankchief, that happened to me too, by the time i had the galoshes, overtrousers and waterproof top on it had abated. Did not get too warm (route mostly downhill) and was a slightly longer route than usual. So maybe some of the manufacturers claims were true (I am a big sweater and tend not to believe a garment can be waterproof and breathable)

Friday the 13th will be the coldest day of winter so far - with the entire country expected to be blanketed in up to four inches (10cm) of snow.

Meanwhile the warnings from the MetOff keep changing, now suggesting no snow for Edinburgh.

  30. Yep - yellow warning of snow has now been cancelled by the Met Office.

Wonder if the 40 - 50mph winds forecast will drop away to lesser speeds before tonight / tomorrow morning?
